Car service. I think I was ripped off, DH thinks it's standard.

I've never owned a new care before. I now own a 2 year old Peugeot and it had a service today, change of oil filter and another filter which stops bacteria entering the car.
They also checked under the car, the brake pads and for oil leaks, checked the tyres. They filmed themselves doing the latter and sent it to me. It took them 1 minute 21 seconds to carry out this check.

Thank the labour cost £142

It was done by lunch time, I argue that £142 is fucking abominable, and DH says it's an expensive car so we have to pay for an expensive service by a Peugeot dealer.

Yearly apparently.

I'm also told that wasn't a 'full service'.
Fuck me we'll have to sell the car to afford the next service!

AIBU?!

Thats normal

m0use · 13/10/2020 18:34

Mine was £350 this year...

Bloomburger · 13/10/2020 18:34

Our last service was £480! Bigger car than yours but a year older. It's par for the course really.

FizzyPink · 13/10/2020 18:35

Yeah that’s normal.
We had our Polo serviced last week and they also did the MOT at the same time. It needed a tyre replacing and new brake pads and it was almost £800

devildeepbluesea · 13/10/2020 18:36

Perfectly reasonable. Cheap, if anything.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 13/10/2020 18:37

Bigger car than yours but a year older.

Mines pretty big to be fair.
I dread the tyre changes.

Onairjunkie · 13/10/2020 18:37

My dealer service cost £900.

toiletpaper · 13/10/2020 18:37

I love cars. A main dealer would have cost around £350-£400 for a service. My main service, haldex service and MOT on my performance hot hatch last year cost £400 and that was an independent German specialist. £142 is a great price I don't know what you're complaining about tbh.

PineconeOfDoom · 13/10/2020 18:37

I think that’s cheap!

BackBeatTheWordisOnTheStreet · 13/10/2020 18:38

Cost me £450 for Mot and service so yours sounds very reasonable.

Florencex · 13/10/2020 18:38

It is pretty cheap, very cheap even.

Redcrayons · 13/10/2020 18:38

That’s cheap.

Mine is going to be £250 and I’m due some tyres.

Nsky · 13/10/2020 18:39

Find an independent dealer, normally cheaper

TheRealShatParp · 13/10/2020 18:40

Mine cost about £170. Cars are bloody expensive!

Ilikewinter · 13/10/2020 18:40

Thats phenomenally cheap for a main dealer service, mines due a major service soon and its going be be just over £500...welcome to the world of car ownership!

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 13/10/2020 18:40

How is £142 for a couple of hours work, cheap?!

That's labour ALONE.

So they get paid £70 an hour?!

OP posts:
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/10/2020 18:41

Yes I'd say £350 for a major service and £150 for intérim service, at an authorised dealer, would be about right.
If they find a problem or brake wear etc expect more...

LIZS · 13/10/2020 18:41

£142 is pretty cheap for a dealership, likely to be more next year as things need changing and mot.

SoddingWeddings · 13/10/2020 18:43

I take it you went to the main dealer, not a normal garage?

Never ever go to the main dealer unless it's important to you to have their stamps on your logbook....

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 13/10/2020 18:43

Of course they don’t get paid £70 per hour! The cost also has to fund the garage premises themselves (rent, maintenance), rates, tax, pension contributions etc for staff etc etc etc

VinylDetective · 13/10/2020 18:44

It’s completely normal. A service for mine is £200-ish. It’s why I have a service plan.

Leaannb · 13/10/2020 18:44

No of course they don't. Ots overhead
tttigress · 13/10/2020 18:47

So was it £142 plus additional costs?

I would say £200-300 for service that you need to maintain warranty is normal (assuming small-midsize car)

Obviously the mechanic isn't on £70 per hour, it is also the cost of workshop, equipment, admin, profit etc.

YellowishZebra · 13/10/2020 18:47

Main dealer first and interim service have always cost me around £200 and full service £300/350.
I always pay for main dealer service for the stamps in the book when I swap it.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 13/10/2020 18:49

You're being ridiculous. Have a little think about what income from jobs will be used on besides wages.
