Car service. I think I was ripped off, DH thinks it's standard.

I've never owned a new care before. I now own a 2 year old Peugeot and it had a service today, change of oil filter and another filter which stops bacteria entering the car.
They also checked under the car, the brake pads and for oil leaks, checked the tyres. They filmed themselves doing the latter and sent it to me. It took them 1 minute 21 seconds to carry out this check.

Thank the labour cost £142

It was done by lunch time, I argue that £142 is fucking abominable, and DH says it's an expensive car so we have to pay for an expensive service by a Peugeot dealer.

Yearly apparently.

I'm also told that wasn't a 'full service'.
Fuck me we'll have to sell the car to afford the next service!

AIBU?!

It's far less than the going rate, so it's cheap. I doubt an independent mechanic would be able to do it for any less.

How much were the parts, out of interest?

iklboo · 13/10/2020 18:50

Ours was £260 for a one year old Fiesta.

ScarMatty · 13/10/2020 18:51

Sounds absolutely normal, and quite reasonable for a dealer actually

unfortunateevents · 13/10/2020 18:51

You were not ripped off. What was the total bill? Future services are going to be a big shock to you.

DieSchottin93 · 13/10/2020 18:52

My local Mazda dealership charges £120 an hour for labour Shock Shock When I had to get my MOT done last month it failed so my bill came to £700 Sad £142 is a bargain!!

nikkylou · 13/10/2020 18:53

Echoing other posters; it's cheap!

But I think it's their secret con though, to get you to pay 'only £25 a month' for their service plans....

leolion1 · 13/10/2020 18:53

Was that just labour or parts too? Filters and engine oil aren't free.

Roselilly36 · 13/10/2020 18:55

Quite normal for a main dealer.

HorsesDogsNails · 13/10/2020 18:58

"So they get paid £70 an hour?!"

Obviously, cos the garage doesn't cost anything to run, need any expensive diagnostic equipment or tools! The overheads of a garage are massive (I have family in the game).

DrDreReturns · 13/10/2020 18:58

Just had my 13 year old car MOT'd and serviced. It was £205. I agree with your DH I think what you paid is reasonable.
As a pp said only use a dealership if you have to. Use word of mouth to find a decent independent garage instead.

GabsAlot · 13/10/2020 18:59

seems reasonable although at an independant i get a full servie for about 140

oil filters arent free

GlummyMcGlummerson · 13/10/2020 19:00

My 5 year old car was £218 for the service. £142 is great!

You got off lightly. Mines usually at least 350

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/10/2020 19:01

Completely reasonable, you have to factor in things like services and MOT when buying a car as they are not cheap to run. At least you can plan for these costs, better than paying for a repair out of nowhere.
I took the service plan with mine so its 20 per month over 4 years rather than huge sums all at once as it's easier to budget for

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 13/10/2020 19:01

Because my originally post wasn't clear (and had a typo to boot 🙄)

it was £142 just for the labour. Not the parts, not the total amount.

However, I see I'm being unreasonable so I'm just going to cry in the corner.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/10/2020 19:02

Also think about what people pay for getting their hair done, do you feel the same about that as it's only an hour or so labour?

MintyMabel · 13/10/2020 19:02

So they get paid £70 an hour?!

No, they cost £70 an hour.

Did someone book you in and take your details? And meet you at the door to hand it over? Was the service carried out in a building with heating and lighting and water? Does it need to be maintained, rent paid, rates paid? Does someone have to do their accounting to make sure bills get paid?

Who do you think pays for all of that?

My daily charge out rate is £450. I get paid roughly half that per day. My boss isn’t making £200 per hour profit on my work.

DH kept saying to me "an Audi dealer will cost XYZ for labour" after the fourth time I wanted to scream BUT I DONT HAVE AN AUDI! 😭😭

£120 an hour though?! SHEESH!! That's madness!

I paid £200 for my service at a dealership a few months ago.

jessstan1 · 13/10/2020 19:04

Quite normal.

SimonJT · 13/10/2020 19:05

Thats cheap for a service, when mine is due in January it will be £230, might have to sell my soul when I need new tyres.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/10/2020 19:06

The oil filter change would have included and oil change...it's about £45 for a full tank of fully synthetic oil needed for a newer car...the filter itself would have been about £8. There's usually a charge of £10 to remove the sump tray.
I live in the NW, £130-60 fairly standard for a service

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 13/10/2020 19:07

@doctorhamster

I paid £200 for my service at a dealership a few months ago.
For the whole service? Or just the labour?

I was quoting for JUST the labour.

MiracletoCome · 13/10/2020 19:08

Sounds about the same as I pay for my Ford Fiesta but at least services are only once a year nowadays
