Car service. I think I was ripped off, DH thinks it's standard.

I've never owned a new care before. I now own a 2 year old Peugeot and it had a service today, change of oil filter and another filter which stops bacteria entering the car.
They also checked under the car, the brake pads and for oil leaks, checked the tyres. They filmed themselves doing the latter and sent it to me. It took them 1 minute 21 seconds to carry out this check.

Thank the labour cost £142

It was done by lunch time, I argue that £142 is fucking abominable, and DH says it's an expensive car so we have to pay for an expensive service by a Peugeot dealer.

Yearly apparently.

I'm also told that wasn't a 'full service'.
Fuck me we'll have to sell the car to afford the next service!

AIBU?!

@CakeRequired

Sounds about the same as I pay for my Ford Fiesta but at least services are only once a year nowadays

You should be changing your oil every 5000 miles at minimum. The oil filter at the same time. If you only do that kind of mileage fair enough. But it's not a yearly thing, it's how much you drive.

I do about 2000 miles a year so once a year is plenty
Burnthurst187 · 13/10/2020 19:21

People saying mine cost double or triple your's, you obviously don't realise that not all services are the same and that the labour rate at say Ford is going to be a lot different to Audi

The price should never come as a shock to you because the service advisor should tell you the prices beforehand. I used to be one!

If you want to save money go to an independent and not a main dealer. The air filter and pollen filter can be changed by yourself if you want and you can simply buy it from somewhere like euro car parts then watch the video of YouTube

IKEA888 · 13/10/2020 19:21

yup £60 to £100 an hour for Labour is normal.

Elai1978 · 13/10/2020 19:22

I've got a Mini Cooper S that had its 2 year service last year. It needed 2 new front tyres and the bill was around £750.

It’s first 2 year service? I hate to think how much they ripped you off for those tyres. Never buy tyres from a main dealer!

Buccanarab · 13/10/2020 19:23

As an ex mechanic I always found it bizarre when people had the OPs attitude to maintenance costs. It's amazing the amount of people who begrudge spending a few hundred quid a year maintaining one of the most complex, vital and expensive assets they'll own but at the same time think nothing of spending £40 a month on a phone or tv package.

Leaannb · 13/10/2020 19:26

@Hopoindown31

Yep, main dealer prices!
That would be cheap for an independent garage
housemdwaswrong · 13/10/2020 19:32

Independent garages can also stamp your service history, not just main dealers. May allow you to shop around, though your price doesn't seem astronomical.

toconclude · 13/10/2020 19:34

@CovidStoleTheRainbow

It was just under £300 and it wasn't a full service.

Have a little think about what income from jobs will be used on besides wages.

I have so many words I want to call you right now but I have to be on my best behaviour because MN have threatened me with a permanent ban, but know that I'm thinking them.
You patronising flip flop.

I wonder why they have done that, when you are so reasonable and polite. Hmm

YABU and clearly not interested in another pov. But I'll give it to you anyway. £142 is cheap.

Ariela · 13/10/2020 19:38

Don't forget 20% is VAT!

So you didn't read my replies then? About me understanding that I was unreasonable? Non?

Anyway for the others - update!
I'm sat in my car and they have cleaned it inside and out and now I feel guilty for being mildly cross about it!!
I take it all back!
Thanks again for the tip about paying it monthly. I will definitely do that to take out the sting.

@CovidStoleTheRainbow

How is £142 for a couple of hours work, cheap?!

That's labour ALONE.

So they get paid £70 an hour?!

That's about how much you get charged per hour, yes. And why a full service costs so much more. You might pay a few quid for some oil and a small part here and there, but the greatest part of the bill is the hourly labour charge.
19lottie82 · 13/10/2020 19:41

That sounds perfectly normal for a dealership, even slightly below average. I run a small independent garage and our price would be £115.

Your husband is right (sort of). It’s worth maintaining a dealership service record while the car is under warranty (which yours is), but after that take it anywhere you want.

FartingInTheFence · 13/10/2020 19:44

I've never owned a new care before

No surprise at this thread and your comments then! 😂🤦‍♂️😂

mechanics

I wouldn’t bother.......

I live in Glasgow and the standard wage for a mechanic is about £25k, maybe at a push £30k if you have loads of experience and really know your stuff.

Not really a great wage considering the skills involved.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 13/10/2020 19:48

The cost isnt just labour. It isnt just the wages paid to the workers. It covers overheads; rent, council tax, advertising, insurance, wages for all involved, consumables, equipment servicing and replacement etc etc. List goes on and on.

You're just thinking "they might get paid £10 an hour. I had 2 guys for 2 hours so it should cost me £40 plus part". That's not how it works at all. You get charged for the parts you need, plus the labour which covers a percentage of ALL the running costs.

Oh... and your service was cheap. There are 2 types; a full service and then a standard service. All garages give them different names (like gold service and silver service or whatever). You need to full one less often than the normal service.

redvest · 13/10/2020 19:48

That's a good price. If it's from the main dealer, it's also part of the warranty guarantee. Mine costs more and it's only a tiny car.

MikeUniformMike · 13/10/2020 19:50

Unless the car is under warranty, find an independent garage. Ask friends and family.
Depending on where in the country you live, the overheads will be a lot of the labour charge.
I have been going to the same garage for years, as do friends who live locally.

redvest · 13/10/2020 19:51

Mine is £270. I have a payment plan

Elieza · 13/10/2020 19:51

I agree that it’s a disgusting amount of money to spend on what seems like a quick job. Especially compared to what I earn per hour! Unfortunately that’s the way it is with main dealers.

That’s why I go to an independent dealer. A local garage I trust. A full service from them is £250. I can pay a little extra for genuine parts. Or I can have the cheaper generic parts used. I can get my book stamped. All good. I’ve decided I will have to keep my car for years so I’m not to fussed at the perceived extra value it would have if I used genuine parts at a main dealer every time and stamp the book. By the time I sell it nobody will care as it will have a high mileage and be ancient!

mommathatwearspink · 13/10/2020 19:59

Yes I agree that sounds normal. Our 2 year service was nearly £500.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/10/2020 20:03

To be fair they should have told you what the service would cost when you booked it in so you didn’t get a shock when you had to pay the bill.

Buccanarab totally with you on that one. I’m doing over 50 miles a day on the school run and have just forked out a lot of money for a decent car that I trust to get me and my children there and back all year round. Will pay whatever it needs to look after it. It’s got my children in it.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/10/2020 20:04

That's very reasonable or a dealer! Think labour works out about 90 quid an hour these days.
Dh learnt how to service his own cars. As a previous poster said parts are cheap you just need to learn to do it.
As another poster says as well youd think nothing of 40 a month on a tv package. Your car needs to be safe and working!

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 13/10/2020 20:05

That's the thing! They did tell me the cost but they didn't tell me the level of service, so I assumed it was a full service, when it came through as minimal service I nearly fell off my angry little chair!

VivaMiltonKeynes · 13/10/2020 20:12

You should use Halfords for the basic free checks and possible services. I use my car brand garage for services and I get a year's free roadside assistance with them which makes then well worth the cost which is usually just over 200 Pounds .

Thelittleweasel · 13/10/2020 20:13

You absolutely do not have to have it done by a Peugeot dealer! Find an independent man whom you trust
