Car service. I think I was ripped off, DH thinks it's standard.

I've never owned a new care before. I now own a 2 year old Peugeot and it had a service today, change of oil filter and another filter which stops bacteria entering the car.
They also checked under the car, the brake pads and for oil leaks, checked the tyres. They filmed themselves doing the latter and sent it to me. It took them 1 minute 21 seconds to carry out this check.

Thank the labour cost £142

It was done by lunch time, I argue that £142 is fucking abominable, and DH says it's an expensive car so we have to pay for an expensive service by a Peugeot dealer.

Yearly apparently.

I'm also told that wasn't a 'full service'.
Fuck me we'll have to sell the car to afford the next service!

AIBU?!

DH Motor tech for many years, average garage costs over £100 per hour, people at work think he earnt that, no way. They also have to video everything they do, a service in less than 2 minutes!! He is old school, actually takes wheels off proper job. Garage don'tl like it, want speed only interested in profits.

TownHallDesigner · 13/10/2020 20:18

@CovidStoleTheRainbow

It was just under £300 and it wasn't a full service.

Have a little think about what income from jobs will be used on besides wages.

I have so many words I want to call you right now but I have to be on my best behaviour because MN have threatened me with a permanent ban, but know that I'm thinking them.
You patronising flip flop.

Jesus Christ, that’s not a normal reaction.

£300 for a service is cheap. But then again, so are Peugeots.

squiglet111 · 13/10/2020 20:19

I pay £20 ish a month to cover the service cost each year. My car is new also. Everyone needs to get their car serviced unfortunately

Awrite · 13/10/2020 20:21

I paid £249 for my first couple. Then I found a place which cost £92. This year, I found a guy near my work who charged £75. Score.

Before this car, I used to share with dh and he dealt with all car stuff.

readysaltedplease · 13/10/2020 20:22

I work for a very high end car dealership, our hourly labour rate is just under £300.. i think £142 labour is fine in comparison for a peugeot sorry!

PigletJohn · 13/10/2020 20:31

An oil and filter change can be cheap at a place that does oil and filter changes. Depending on car and mileage you might need one every 6/12/24 months.

for example
www.national.co.uk/servicing/servicing-pricing
and they use high-quality oils and filters.

I have a Peugeot, on mine the cabin/pollen filter can be changed without tools in about a minute. You lift the old one out of the tray and drop the new one in. if you are not handy I imagine a budget service station would do it for a modest fee. Places that sell tyres and brakes will check those for you, sometimes free as they hope to sell you replacements. Mine even did a free "boil check" on the brake fluid when I asked if it needed to be flushed and renewed (it didn't). I get the MoT done there as well. The car is rather old so I don't think it is good value going to the main dealer any more like we did when it was new.

Take a look at the table of "servicing" jobs and checks to be ticked off in your owners handbook. Most of them are trivial. Depending on your car, it might have a sequence of oil change/minor service/major service that just cycles through the three. Occasionally there will be a major job, like the timing belt, that needs actual mechanics.

It's a good idea to get the Dealer service stamps in your book for the first few years as this improves resale value.

I have another car that I take to a local specialist (not a dealer). They stamp the book and for my model, owners and buyers prefer local specialists.

islockdownoveryet · 13/10/2020 20:43

You say you've never had a new but have you ever had a car before ?
A quick google would tell you average cost is and I assumed you would ask how much is a service beforehand?
Honestly it's like you won't have it that's how much it costs . Your husband has said that's right everyone on the internet has said but still you think it's extortionate.
It's expensive to keep a car on the road and dealership are always more than a local garage . If you want to pay less ring round a couple of garages next time but get a quote in advance.

Ilovelblue · 13/10/2020 20:44

I had mine done last Friday and it was £152 for the first annual service. It took just under 2 hours. I always use the main dealer as it's leased and part of the lease agreement is that it always has to be serviced by the main dealer (who, I have to say, are excellent and I wouldn't go anywhere else).

Otterhound · 13/10/2020 20:47

If car is under warranty you have to use a main dealer to keep it. Then go independent

NEVER buy tyres from a main dealer. They are often double the price of say kwik fit ( providing you buy them online first - never just rock up to a kwik fit either!)

But £300 all in isn't bad. Wait til you need a new timing belt!!!

Alarae · 13/10/2020 20:55

Sounds cheap for main dealer labour. My local independant charges £70+VAT per hour for labour.

You are paying for the knowledge of someone else, which while it can be learned by yourself, it is the same for a lot of things.

For example, simple tax returns. Some people charge £100-150 which is viewed as 'cheap'. I can guarantee it took them five minutes to do.

Personally, my charge out rate is something ridiculous like £450 per hour. Sadly I'm not paid anything like that as there are other overheads to pay (Like the partners profits...)

19lottie82 · 13/10/2020 21:01

You should use Halfords for the basic free checks and possible services.

Terrible, terrible advice! Stay away from Halfords!

mne13 · 13/10/2020 21:02

My two year old aygo cost £260 for its second service this year but they told me how much each service for the first 3 years would cost so I was prepared for it.

kathrynjanewaykicksass · 13/10/2020 21:06

Doesn't seem that bad to me! I'd say it was cheap

Elai1978 · 13/10/2020 21:14

Total bollocks

MiracletoCome · 13/10/2020 21:24

You can go to any garage for a service but to keep the warranty they just have to follow the service schedule and use genuine parts. It was changed a few years ago that you don’t have to go to a main dealership, though if you have some car finance/pcp you may have to because of that

notdaddycool · 13/10/2020 21:30

If you skip them you risk ruining your engine and they cost a lot to replace. That isn't a big bill, divide it by 12 if you must you only get it once a year.

Nottobesoldseparately · 13/10/2020 21:41

£220 all in for my last 3 services at the Skoda dealership I got my Octavia at.

(The car before that I got them for free)

MoistMolly · 13/10/2020 23:00

Definitely a cheap service

AmuckAmuckAmuck · 13/10/2020 23:05

I needed the big service for mine last month. Cam belt, water pump, haldex unit etc. There was very little change from £700 and that wasn't even main dealer.
I think DH may have died of shock if I'd taken it to main dealer 😂

Bubbletrouble43 · 13/10/2020 23:12

Dp just booked our golf in for a service and said he expects it to be around £300. ( he deals with car finance stuff)

Cecilia2016 · 13/10/2020 23:29

My car is £400 just labour alone and £290 for 1 tyre

Elai1978 · 13/10/2020 23:31

£290 for 1 tyre

Hope that’s not main dealer prices!

Elsewyre · 13/10/2020 23:32

@CovidStoleTheRainbow

How is £142 for a couple of hours work, cheap?!

That's labour ALONE.

So they get paid £70 an hour?!

60-70 pound an hour is about the rate most garages charge for labour.

How cheap do you think tools, Insurance, hazardus waste disposal etc is?

decoraters · 13/10/2020 23:36

You do not need to use the main dealer. Just genuine parts.

Cecilia2016 · 13/10/2020 23:37

@Elai1978

£290 for 1 tyre

Hope that’s not main dealer prices!

Yes £290 for 1 from the main dealer where I bought the car and because they are large tyres
