Car service. I think I was ripped off, DH thinks it's standard.

I've never owned a new care before. I now own a 2 year old Peugeot and it had a service today, change of oil filter and another filter which stops bacteria entering the car.
They also checked under the car, the brake pads and for oil leaks, checked the tyres. They filmed themselves doing the latter and sent it to me. It took them 1 minute 21 seconds to carry out this check.

Thank the labour cost £142

It was done by lunch time, I argue that £142 is fucking abominable, and DH says it's an expensive car so we have to pay for an expensive service by a Peugeot dealer.

Yearly apparently.

I'm also told that wasn't a 'full service'.
Fuck me we'll have to sell the car to afford the next service!

AIBU?!

My DH has a Mercedes because he leases it had to have the electronic service book up to date Can’t take it to a independent because it’s leased
The one time he did on his previous car a few years ago Mercedes billed him for not servicing at main dealer £750
First service £300
Second. £500
Third £700
142 is a fucking bargain😂

@CovidStoleTheRainbow

How is £142 for a couple of hours work, cheap?!

That's labour ALONE.

So they get paid £70 an hour?!

No they don't. Main dealers always charge an extortionate amount. Find an independent garage for future work. I have a guy who is completely trustworthy and ethical. He's also a nice man to boot. Ask friends who they go to for their work, that's how you find a good garage - by word of mouth.
wombat1a · 14/10/2020 02:41

That 70/hr covers cost of tools, which includes that lifts they use and they are pricey, all the running costs of the garage etc etc.

Then factor in the cost of admin staff, accountants etc etc and that 70/hr looks reasonable.

Pyewhacket · 14/10/2020 03:34

I used to drive a Mercedes but I got rid of it purely because of the service costs.

Elai1978 · 14/10/2020 07:37

Yes £290 for 1 from the main dealer where I bought the car and because they are large tyres

Never buy tyres from the main dealer! Also replacing a single tyre is a bit odd. Puncture? Out of interest what size are they?

LEELULUMPKIN · 14/10/2020 07:52

A 2 year old car is not new.

PeachyLife · 14/10/2020 13:51

2 year old Peugeot .. it should be under warranty still? Otherwise, find an independent trustworthy workshop. authorized dealers will always always charge more without fail.

QueenOllie · 14/10/2020 14:13

As long as you have it done where they use genuine parts and fluids, it doesn't affect the warranty
I work for a main dealer and labour is £140 plus VAT. Servicing can be anything from £300 to £1000+ depending what they're having done

Elai1978 · 14/10/2020 14:37

2 year old Peugeot .. it should be under warranty still?

And? Why would that cover a service?

dancemom · 14/10/2020 14:40

My non dealer service was £62 and my MOT was £40, no work required.

Some of your services cost more than my car!

AryaStarkWolf · 14/10/2020 14:44

sounds cheap to me

19lottie82 · 14/10/2020 15:30

because it’s leased

You can take most leased cars to an independent dealer (this will be detailed in your lease agreement), but as you mentioned they must have the software to update the service record online.

LilyLongJohn · 14/10/2020 15:35

I had a Mercedes and it cost me £600 Blush

If you figure you're paying probably around £50 to £75 per hour for the mechanics time (plus vat), to change the oil and filters it's going to be between 1 and 1.5 hrs to do inc the checks. Oil and filters aren't cheap either, think between £30 and £75 each, then there's the charge to dispose of your oil, there's your total.

Coulddowithanap · 14/10/2020 17:00

If you aren't happy with paying for labour then maybe buy a manual and do a service yourself!

I used to do this when I was younger and didn't care about getting grubby or cold outside on the driveway, however more than happy for someone else to do it now.

SurreyHillsGirl · 14/10/2020 17:05

Ha I wish my service was that cheap. Mine is £600. Cars are a luxury.
