Where do you think we'll be?

I hope to god, somewhere near normal.

Feels incredibly bleak.

OP posts:
Leaannb · 13/10/2020 17:17
**@Leaannb. Is that virus still in circulation, or if not what caused it to disappear?
Of course it is 34000 people died from it last year in the States

TibetanTerrier · 13/10/2020 17:18

@Teateaandmoretea

And the people you kill by doing this just don't matter?

What about the people killed by lockdown?

What about the people killed by other diseases worldwide that are never mentioned? Eg malaria and TB.

What about the people worldwide killed by poverty?

I am really sick of people in the U.K. thinking their lives are more important than those of poor people elsewhere in the world. That’s why the WHO says lockdowns should be avoided. They hurt the poor.

Next time you go to write something so judgemental and nasty first look in the mirror long and hard

Nothing at all to do with British lives being more important. Everything to do with the fact that British lives are as important, and that every one of us can save lives immediately by not being as totally selfish as @Racoonworld. All people have to do is follow a few simple rules to contain the virus and they aren't even prepared to do that because they find it inconvenient and they don't like having to give some things up. There is zero hope of beating malaria or poverty around the world when people are so completely selfish and uncaring for others who are on their own doorstep.
LindaEllen · 13/10/2020 17:18

What's the point in asking people for predictions and then jumping down their throats if it's not what you want to hear?

I'll make one you'll like.

Covid-19 will have been eliminated thanks to successful vaccine trials, all of the population will have received a vaccine and taken up immunity. Social distancing and all precautions are over, we can hug our families and visit care homes once again, and the government have given everyone generous grants to help negate any hardship from 2020.*

*That is absolutely not what I think will happen.

Leaannb · 13/10/2020 17:18

@SomewhereEast

Firstly that doesn't really answer my question. Secondly we kind of do know that the majority of the population are low risk. No one is going to shut the world down & risk a second Great Depression because of post-viral fatigue, they really aren't.

Honestly I just find the lack of perspective people have about this bizarre.

In what way do we know that the majority of the population are low risk?
lioncitygirl · 13/10/2020 17:19

Back to normal.

Esspee · 13/10/2020 17:20

My feelings on where we are likely to be this time next year are unfortunately downbeat.

The first coronaviruses affected humans in the 1960s, since then we have created a vaccine for not a single coronavirus which jumped the species barrier despite several of them being potentially extremely dangerous.
So in 60 years we haven’t come up with a vaccine. Why are we assuming an effective one will be found soon?

Teateaandmoretea · 13/10/2020 17:21

@TibetanTerrier even better when people also lack the decency for self reflection Wink

AbbyAbal · 13/10/2020 17:22

I try to remember that we are learning more about the virus everyday. Work on lots of different vaccines is coming along, we’re learning what works in terms of lockdowns and treatments are developing. We’re better at treating the virus now than we were and we’ll be even better next year.
In terms of economics demand is still there, lots of people have lost their jobs but hopefully once we have treatments or a vaccine the economy will grow quickly. I hope new restaurants will open and people will want to travel and enjoy themselves again, hopefully jobs will follow.

Mintychoc1 · 13/10/2020 17:24

OP you are brave posting this. It’s basically a thread to gladden the hearts of the dementors on here. They’re constantly lurking, waiting to predict doom and gloom, and this thread is a dream come true for them!
I think by this time next year we will have Covid under control, but we will sadly be experiencing some austerity.

Mintychoc1 · 13/10/2020 17:28

I don’t think people will get back into the habit of shaking hands though. I have to say I never liked it, and I’ll happily stop doing it .

MeltingIceCaps · 13/10/2020 17:29

By October next year? I reckon COVID vaccine will have been given to all vulnerable groups and in process of rolling out to others too. Everywhere will be open as "normal" but masks still used quite frequently and still some social distancing and strict hygiene measures in place.

As a result of the lockdowns plus inevitable Brexit disaster, the economy will be in tatters, the top 1% richest people will be richer and everyone else will be poorer and paying more for everything.

MagicSummer · 13/10/2020 17:31

I actually do think things will be better by this time next year, to the extend that masks and SD will no longer be required in most places. However, I think we are going to experience a very long, difficult, upsetting and frustrating winter period. Spring will bring some optimism but we are going to have to dig deep over the next 4-5 months.

BrazenlyDefying · 13/10/2020 17:32

5 or 6 months but I have absolutely no immunity including T cell immunity. Its looking more and more likely herd immunity will not be possible and a working vaccine very difficult

Based on ONE person's experience. One random dementor on MN who knows better than everyone in the scientific community put together. One randomer who is predicting lockdowns and misery FOREVER.

Fucks sake, there's being realistic and there's walking around with a fucking black cloud over your head.

Quartz2208 · 13/10/2020 17:32

@Leaannb how have you managed to get your immunity so thoroughly checked?

At some point the cure will become worse than the disease - you can see that now with how we are dealing with the second wave is different to the first.

Plus these things do naturally even out (not disappear but just bob along)

Gilly12345 · 13/10/2020 17:34

Hopefully still alive, the country will be in recession, things I think will be much like now, in and out of lovkdowns, I hope Trump will NOT be President of USA and if Boris has left PM job then Rishi will be PM.

Not sure about a Labour government for the future as I don't know enough at the moment of Keir Starmer, just very happy Jeremy Corbyn has not much power now as the country is a safer place without him.

picklecustard · 13/10/2020 17:37

Honestly I have no idea now.

I do wonder how much more of this people will be able to ‘take’ though and whether there will be a lot more rebellion the longer restrictions continue

No. Thats what research is telling us. So far immunity is at 3 months past diagnosis. Antibodies disappear. Im not a dementor and not predicting lockdowns and misery forever. Its not going to happen overnight. This will not be over in another 6 months. This will not be over in a year. We will adapt and move on but that process takes time. Its a marathon and not a sprint
alreadytaken · 13/10/2020 17:42

In 6 months time there will be better treatments for covid-19. There will also be significant numbers of people who have been infected so while there wont be herd immunity the infection rate will have slowed. The weather will be improving and most restrictions will be relaxed for the summer. Anywhere that can possibly hold a wedding will be full up.

By the end of summer we will have a vaccine or 6, everyone will finally be getting the message about taking their vitamin D supplements but the NHS will still be struggling with the backlog of normal health care and will be asking everyone to wear masks and hand wash so they keep flu levels down.

Unemployment will have risen over the winter but there will be an explosion of spending in the good weather and more people will be finding work.

Boris will have been told to go by men in grey suits but cummings will still be there, just a bit more hidden.

Earlier in lockdown dementors were the people who screeched about going to Tesco for an Easter egg akin to going out and murdering someone, is it now a term for anyone who isn't optimistic about progress in managing the virus?
janetmendoza · 13/10/2020 17:45

Sorry you are getting such a hard time Leanne and no things will not be back to normal this time next year. This winter will be terrible for all the reasons people have given - there will be some relief healthwise over the summer, but of course by the loads of us will have lost our jobs. The next winter will be more of the same.

unmarkedbythat · 13/10/2020 17:46

It boggles belief that anyone can say that with a straight face if they are paying any attention at all to the government we've got
Spiderbaby8 · 13/10/2020 17:46

None of the very doom and gloom predictions I have read on here have come true, so there is no point in thinking ahead negatively, or positively for that matter. Take each day as it comes and follow the rules as best as you can.

tobee · 13/10/2020 17:47
@Leaannb

all antibodies disappear, its what they do.

What is important is that you have T cells which contain a memory of the antibodies.

Next time you see the infection, the T cells kick in and remember how to make the antibodies and they get to work.

you MAY get it twice - it depends on how long the T cells take to kick in but in virtually all cases, it should be a much milder illness.

the elderly who do not have as good T cell production may need annual vaccines

I sometimes think people need to learn science before they comment
Agreed!

Mintychoc1 · 13/10/2020 17:50

unmarkedly there’s a difference between lacking in optimism, and positively revelling in predicting misery in a way that is designed to upset people. Both types are on this thread. I’ve seen it so much on here, mainly in the coronavirus forum, where people are practically orgasming at being able to tell others how bad it’s going to be FOR EVER. They shut down any positivity and hope. It baffles me why anyone would want to spread such toxicity. I assume they must have very small sad lives.

MaxNormal · 13/10/2020 17:54

@ACautionaryTale thank you!
I really wish people would read up a bit more before posting about antibodies when they don't understand properly.
