AIBU to buy this romper for a baby girl?

It's definitely aimed at a boy if you know that style. I wouldn't have put a baby girl in it.

Mishmased · 14/10/2020 09:39

@mistermagpie

I think it's horrible but beyond that I agree with you.

I have two boys and a girl, they are all close in age and the girl is only a baby. Naturally (or maybe not naturally to everyone?) she wears a lot of hand me downs which are therefore literally 'boys' clothes. In reality this means is a LOT of navy or bright colours and pretty much no pink. She also has a footmuff on her pram which is both blue and covered in dinosaurs.

The sheer number of people who comment on this is ridiculous. She's a very bald baby too and I'm constantly told by family to 'put a bow on her or everyone with think she's a boy!'. Well so what if they do?! She doesn't care, she still has a vagina and people who know us know she's a girl anyway.

There is also a lot of unpleasant subtext in comments along the lines of now I've 'finally got my girl' I should be showing her off.

I really dont get it. I'm definitely a woman and I don't have to go round dressed in pink with bows on my head to prove it. Why do people treat babies like that? It really annoys me.

Love this!
EachPeachPearSums · 14/10/2020 09:39

If you wanted to put you're own girl in it I'd say go for it but I wouldn't purposefully buy a traditionally masculine outfit as a gift for a baby girl.

OwlBeThere · 14/10/2020 09:42

I wouldn’t buy it for anyone Cos it’s ugly as sin. But it’s no more for a boy than a girl.

dudsville · 14/10/2020 09:44

I think that's so incredibly adorable!

And just to participate in the debate. I don't think clothes make me a woman but I do see some clothes as leaning more on one side or another and this romper is more feminine than a masculine to my eye.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/10/2020 09:48

Ib think it's very Prince George/ Louis in style, but if put a girl in it. I think it's about knowing your audience. I wanted a girl so I could see her in little dinosaur dresses and robot dresses but got all boys. My bff had a girl but I wouldn't buy robots etc for her as I know she wouldn't like it. Know your audience but yes your friend is being ridiculous

aprilanne · 14/10/2020 09:55

It's for a boy sorry no way would I put a girl in that and most parents of girls would probably bin it so you wasting your money

seayork2020 · 14/10/2020 09:58

I would not buy it but not a boy girl thing it i think it looks unisex though

MaryJane54331 · 14/10/2020 09:58

Definitely looks unisex to me. I think it's really cute Smile

Babdoc · 14/10/2020 09:59

Sad to see sexist stereotypes are alive and kicking in the 21st century for so many PPs.
My DDs both had some baby clothes that were blue. DD1 had a particularly adorable blue woolly hat with guardsmen on it. They liked jeans and leggings as toddlers, and a top with dinosaurs. DD1 grew up to do a maths degree and work in STEM, DD2 a business degree and work in marketing financial software. They are both heterosexual feminists in happy long term relationships.
I wish people would stop overthinking something as trivial as baby clothes, and stop inflicting sexist shit on innocent babies!

Seriously if someone gifted you that for your child you wouldn't even put it on for one photo, pass on our donate, you'd just bin??
Coffeeandaride · 14/10/2020 10:02

I think it’s fine as a baby girl present, for what you are looking for.
Looks a bit like girls school uniform dresses!

Siennabear · 14/10/2020 12:11

Doesn’t look very warm or comfy. Sleep suits are much easier and comfy for tiny babies.

Noitjustwontdo · 14/10/2020 12:12

Failing to see why you wouldn’t really. Most baby clothes are entirely unisex and nobody really cares about a baby’s clothing anyway provided it’s weather appropriate.

Lweji · 14/10/2020 12:12

Doesn’t look very warm

That's what the OP is aiming for. Grin

Why does it need to be warm?
BabyItsAWildWorld · 14/10/2020 12:36

It's very cute, I love a retro look for little children.
I also love navy on little children and think a boy or girl could wear that.

Parker231 · 14/10/2020 12:40

I’m not keen on that style of baby clothes but I was given it I would use for a boy or girl - babies can wear any colour!

My baby can’t. Black looks terrible on her and mustard washes her out. So sad.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/10/2020 12:46

Well it depends on the parents, doesn’t it. You know them better than we do.

Would they put their baby in it.
It’s a gorgeous suit for a baby boy, but I personally wouldn’t put it on a girl.
I’m very frilly and bowy

Sceptre86 · 14/10/2020 12:49

I am not a fan of the colour so wouldn't have put either of my kids in it. It is unisex though.

iamyourequal · 14/10/2020 12:49

I wouldn’t buy it as a gift for a girl, as the recipient might well wonder why you have gifted her baby girl a boys outfit, she might even think it’s being re-gifted. Then, if she does use it, she will get fed up correcting people who comment on how cute her little boy is. Fine to put your own girls in boys clothes but I wouldn’t assume other people would wish to do the same.

BurtonHouse · 14/10/2020 12:59

I think it's cute.
And you can remind your friend that there is at least one female Yeoman Beefeater.

TheNinny · 14/10/2020 13:14

I love the outfit, but wouldn't buy it as a gift for a baby girl. That said, there is technically nothing wrong with it for a girl but it looks traditionally boyish to me. I dress my 1 yr old in light grey all the time as she really suits it, but i havent ever seen london soldier designs aimed at girls or even gender neutral sections. You'll get told uabu for not dressing a girl in that, but from what i can see not many people are rushing to dress thier baby boy in pinks/lilacs/flowers or dresses. But for some baby girls looking like baby boys is much more accepted/encouraged. However, I was a 'tomboy' growing up so get why this has come about. Ultimately you know your friend best and what she would find acceptable.
