Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

Beaver tails from Canada! Flat donut type things in the shape of beaver tails full of whatever naughty treats you like because you are on holiday and the diet starts when you get back.

Lucky lettuce like the local Chinese restaurant used to make - closed down a few years ago when the owners retired
Never found anything that tastes the same

nevermorelenore · 12/10/2020 18:43

Mexican! We need to bring some Mexican immigrants into the country because there are way too few Mexican restaurants, and the ones we do have are often shit. I want proper authentic Mexican and not just that shit from Chiquitos.

Also, it would be nice if Just Eat had something other than six Indian restaurants and one chip shop that's about 20 miles away. Or that my local Chinese would finally accept card payments and do deliveries so I can stuff my fat face without going to the cash point!

Veda bread. I live in London where you can get most things but not that. I'd kill for a slice now, toasted with lashings of butter.

Rockandgrohl · 12/10/2020 18:49

A deep fried Mars bar Blush
Lays crisps...the taste of holiday

Lindy2 · 12/10/2020 18:49

Fish tacos from a particular chippy in Cornwall. It's a long way away from us.

I also had an amazing pumpkin and peanut soup in a Cuban restaurant in London many years ago. I'd love to have it again but I can't remember where it was and it's probably not there anymore anyway.

I can get Savaloys though at every fish and chip shop in my area. I had absolutely no idea that they were regional.

Pie, mash and liquor with vinegar and pepper. Cockney living in Wales and it’s the only thing I’d consider moving home for.

whattodoandhow · 12/10/2020 18:51

Macaroni cheese pies, plain bread and American cheetoes (gotta have those e numbers in!)

wewillmeetagain · 12/10/2020 18:52

Proper old fashioned bakery sandwiches, rolls, cakes and bread. Greggs come close but they are not quite there.

ChillPillRequired · 12/10/2020 18:52

Stotties. And fresh pease pudding.

Grumpbum123 · 12/10/2020 18:53

Garlic spaghetti circa 1997 from M&S

Lurchermom · 12/10/2020 18:55

The octopus salad I had in Croatia. I dream about that salad. Salivate over it.

Iola4 · 12/10/2020 18:55

TinkersRucksack...I have considered getting in a car and just driving to a South Wales Chippy...ppl think I'm talking another language when I mention a Rissole!
They don't know what they're missing out on!

Crab tacos from the Four Seasons in Mexico City.

Salsa verde from the Four Seasons breakfast buffet in Punta Mita.

A proper Hull pattie.

footchewer · 12/10/2020 18:59

Great thread - this is what MN is for. I haven't got time to read the whole thing but love the fact that it's bifurcated between highly refined and exotic food (Lebanese, Malaysian street food, Keralan sea bass, Egyptian falafel) and absolute trash / fast food ... and bovril. Shows where people's hearts are!

I'm just the same - can't get decent Tagines where I am unless it's me cooking, but really miss scraps with fish and chips like you get up north ...

Chanjer · 12/10/2020 18:59

Pollywaffle 😭

OnlyYellowRoses · 12/10/2020 19:01

Proper Tutti-Frutti flavour ice cream like you used to get in parlours

GameSetMatch · 12/10/2020 19:01

Baklava, there’s no nice baklava in the whole of the U.K.! I want crispy warm fresh baklava not the crap they sell pretending to to baklava!

Tutti frutti! Brings back memories of 90s childhood. Suspect it disappeared due to so many not liking 'bits' in their food. e.g. I love fresh OJ with bits but many hate it.
Highlandcathedral · 12/10/2020 19:07

Unless I’ve missed it, I miss butteries. They are a bit like dense croissants, all buttery salty loveliness. An Aberdeen and highland speciality. I could eat one now, warmed with lots of butter. Heart attack on a plate but so lovely.

OnlyYellowRoses · 12/10/2020 19:08

@Howlooseisyourgoose exactly that! I miss it ☹️

PenCreed · 12/10/2020 19:09

@GameSetMatch there’s a place in Edinburgh run by a couple of Syrian guys that does amazing baklava!

AlannaOfTrebond · 12/10/2020 19:09

This fish tacos recipe is amazing, really fancy them right now.

Imissmoominmama · 12/10/2020 19:10

Scabbard fish with skin on chips and salad from a little cafe in Funchal. So fresh and well cooked.

Davros · 12/10/2020 19:11

Parmesan ice cream I had in Madrid at a fancy tapas bar.
Milk bottle sweets like the ones we used to get as kids (Maynards?). M&S did them brilliantly until they changed the recipe a couple of years ago. I complained and they sent me a £1 token! I went in a spree with that
