Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

I've never had a parmo (I think that's what it's called) or a munchy box as neither exist down here and they sound delicious.

rarotonga2 · 12/10/2020 20:25

I love Sri Lankan food and really miss the amazing restaurants in South West London since moving to the suburbs. There are a couple of local take aways but have the lowest hygiene ratings so am unwilling to chance them.

YeahWhatevver · 12/10/2020 20:26

PF Chang's Mongolian Beef.

speakout · 12/10/2020 20:32

talismankeeper Sri Lankan food? I struggle to understand that . I have never had god Sri Lankan food. And I have tried!!

Slumcat · 12/10/2020 20:33

Live in the north east but welsh roots, miss welsh cakes, dunked in a cup of tea

billydilly · 12/10/2020 20:34

Another vote for Staffordshire oatcakes; melted cheese on top and rolled like a tiny carpet. And no, Dh, they're not "basically galettes" you posh git

onlyhereforthefood · 12/10/2020 20:34

Liquorice ice cream from a little shop in Looe

Chip Spice

Chocolate Hazelnut M&Ms, I ate these every day in the USA last year.

NationMcKinley · 12/10/2020 20:36

@SimonJT - my MIL is Punjabi and when I was pregnant I became addicted to those mangoes. Happily she’s a complete feeder and announced to me that “mangoes are very good for health”. She bought me boxes and boxes. Who was I to complain? Grin. She even brought them into the hospital after I’d had him (result).

Interestingly my son is also mad on them so my lovely MIL is very happy Smile

We can’t see her at the moment because of bloody lockdown. I miss her chole and samosas.

SanFrancisco49er · 12/10/2020 20:54

Proper, freshly baked, chocolate chip Brioche. There's a boulangerie on Northcote Rd who do the best I've ever tasted but sadly I live miles from London now.

Northernmum100 · 12/10/2020 20:57

A type of bread I can only ever buy in Menorca/majorca. Widely available, sort of a flat oval, usually pre sliced, sort of rustic looking.
If I ever do find it in the UK, I will be the size of a house because i seriously love it....

Tattoocrazymum · 12/10/2020 21:00

Scottish snowballs
They do some similar in b&m but not like the ones in scotland, when i visit family i grab a few packs from asda

OliveHenry · 12/10/2020 21:04

For those who asked, tomato sausage is a standard meat sausage (pork I assume) but with tomato added. So the whole sausage has a reddish tinge, and the oil that comes out when you cook them is very red.

I think it's a fairly northern thing but not exactly sure where it originates.

I'm in Yorkshire, and my gran always had tomato sausage (split open to make sure it cooked all the way through!) with mashed potatoes and onion gravy, every Thursday. It was heavenly and I could just eat a plateful right now!

ifancyagreencard · 12/10/2020 21:05

PunishmentSnart · 12/10/2020 21:09

@MoltenLasagne loads of places in Liverpool sell burrata. I love it Smile

Aquarius15 · 12/10/2020 21:09

Sounds really boring but a local independent bakery/sandwich shop used to sell ham salad rolls with sliced boiled egg.
They were amazing, every ingredient was so fresh with real butter. Sadly now closed.
Also fried liver, saganaki and stifado on holiday in Corfu.

MillieVanilla · 12/10/2020 21:12

@Proudboomer

East London pie and mash with lashings of liquor.
Ooh Arments Yes yes yes
Davros · 12/10/2020 21:14

M&S sells Burrata.
What's with all the JustEat love? Never used it, I thought everyone used Deliveroo like me.
Anyone wanting a decent bagel, DH (Jewish) favours Panzers in St John's Wood or Roni's will do. Not as good as the Carmelli bagel bakery of old, Long gone Sad
I had a fantastic crepe cake in the food hall under the Plaza Hotel in NY. Id like that again

HollowTalk · 12/10/2020 21:16

@noideaatallreally

Gypsy tart - I know they sell it in Kent, but can't get it in Wales. My gran used to make this for me and I have not tasted it in 3 decades!

Decent clam chowder. In Boston USA they sell it in a bowl made of bread - heaven.

Here's a recipe for gypsy tart - no excuses not to make it!
JovialNickname · 12/10/2020 21:20

A coffee to sit down and drink in a cafe or shop. As I don't have a smart phone with an app and am only able to pay in cash (poverty) this is out of reach to me apparently.

MammaSchwifty · 12/10/2020 21:27

Sicilian gelato brioche
Yorkshire curd tart
Yucatan street food
really ripe fresh peaches
Poutine
That filthy jar nacho cheese dip they sell in the states

inchyra · 12/10/2020 21:33

@speakout Sri Lankan food is widely available in my bit of SW London - I love the fish curries, and samba which is a sweet and sour daal.

Loads of African and West Indian foods available in Shepherd’s Bush Market. I‘m not about to try bushmeat but once had goat slow roasted in pomegranate molasses and it was divine. Shebu is quite the foodie destination now. Don’t know about Egyptian falafel but Mr Palestinian’s falafel is legendary.

EltonJohnsSunglasses · 12/10/2020 21:33

Chip shop spam fritters...none of the chippies near me do them.
Rum Babas....used to be able to get them in Sainsbury’s fresh cake section in the 80’s..nowhere to be found now

kateybeth79 · 12/10/2020 21:34

Walkers Tomato Ketchup crisps - they reappear every now and then, and then disappear again. Marble chocolate bar - discontinued years ago. Junior Mints - had them in the US and became obsessed with them!!

Glitterbubbles · 12/10/2020 21:37

Tropical fruits as a PP has said - fresh mangosteens, rambutan, mango, papaya, guava
Kotthu roti from Sri Lanka - local Sri Lankan takeaway does it but just not the same
Fizzy drinks from east Africa with all the colourings and flavourings.. passion fruit Fanta is amazing!
