AIBU to be annoyed at people saying I'm buying too much for my baby

I sent my family a picture of some baby clothes I've bought, literally 6 sleep suits, maybe a dozen vests, a snow suit and two hats.

They're all saying I've bought too much and to slow down, that other people will buy me things, and I'll end up with two much.

The things I've bought are all newborn/first size, so are for the hospital bag and the first few weeks. And I've really not bought a lot? I'm 21 weeks so still have a long time to go obviously but if I see something and like it I pick it up.

We live three hours away from family and I don't like relying on getting things for other people so why is it unreasonable to make sure my baby has clothes?

YANBU seems fine to me. Maybe it seemed like a lot because you sent a few picks and it looked like more than it was?

You are going to be inundated with advice from people who know better your entire child rearing years. Grow a thick skin and if you can afford it then buy whatever the hell you want, it's your baby.

DappledThings · 11/10/2020 11:27

Snowsuits aren't any use till they are walking in my experience so I'd return that if you can.

triceratops12 · 11/10/2020 11:27

It's completely up to you, people love to tell people their kids have too much. Especially at Christmas. Is it because you're only 21 weeks maybe that's why they are saying to slow down as it's still early?

Xmasbaby11 · 11/10/2020 11:29

That's not much at all. I probably had twice as many baby clothes as that. Mostly in 0-3 which is good as dd was only in newborn for a few weeks. We did get given baby clothes but they were all bigger sizes eg 3-6 months, as I guess people assumed we had enough for immediate use.

I used a snowsuit from 3 months. DS was born early November and so was freezing without one!
eatsleepread · 11/10/2020 11:30

Crack on! Buying new baby things is lovely 😊
I don't think that people meant to offend or annoy you though, and I do think you might need a thicker skin!

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 11/10/2020 11:31

I'm going to say you've bought enough and dont buy anything else but not for the same reasons!
The newborn size might not fit. I bought more than you did for the few few months to make sure they had outfits for lovely photos and cute looks etc. My first baby was huge; newborn stuff was a tight squeeze so no use. Kept it for my 2and, and the same thing happened.

You've bought enough for a few days without doing any washing, you'll get gifts so you'll be sorted for a couple weeks. Dont buy anything else until baby is here and you know the size.

Sharpandshineyteeth · 11/10/2020 11:31

I used snowsuits and baby carriers from birth. My sister always says she didn’t what my baby looked like properly until she emerged from that phase 😂

VainAbigail · 11/10/2020 11:31

Are they secretly trying to tell you they’ve bought you a shit tonne of clothes and you need to stop buying stuff yourself? Personally I’d say you’ve not bought quite enough yet!

How can you possibly say that without knowing anything about the OP's situation?

If she doesn't have (or use) a car often and does a lot of walk then a snowsuit can be pretty essential for a winter baby.

peonyrose87 · 11/10/2020 11:32

@WhereverIGoddamnLike yes, I wasn't planning on buying anymore newborn things for those reasons! I just wanted to have a few incase needed.

@DappledThings I live in the north east of Scotland, a snow suit is needed!

I had December and February babies. Used pramsuits loads, the fleecy ones but actual snowsuits were pointless. Far too bulky even for the pram and boiling hot as soon as you went inside anywhere. I gave an unused one that was bought for me to a charity shop.

One of those annoyances that if anyone had asked me what would be useful for DC2 I would have saved them wasting their money.

ReallyLazy · 11/10/2020 11:33

You probably will be inundated but its your baby and you can do what you like. Id try not to be too wasteful though if you can control the nesting urge Grin

People are very cautious about buying until the last minute though.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 11/10/2020 11:33

It's fine! Enjoy! You can tell people who are buying stuff for you that you have plenty in newborn but will be needing 0-3/3-6 sizes. In fact usually people buy the next size up anyway.
Which was rubbish for me as mine were tiny and took a long while before even needed newborn.

My advice, laugh it off, your baby = your choice what you buy.

People can get so opinionated when a new baby is on the way!

Laaalaaaa · 11/10/2020 11:34

From my experience, the majority of clothes gifted were in bigger sizes. We only bought a few items before hand as we wanted to go and buy either more girly or boyish clothes once baby was here.

@DappledThings

It was the absolute opposite for us - I used them when DS was not mobile. Now that he's more active, there's no way I'd be able to bundle him into one and all that would happen is he'd move around so much that he'd get tangled up in it.
DappledThings · 11/10/2020 11:35

If she doesn't have (or use) a car often and does a lot of walk then a snowsuit can be pretty essential for a winter baby.

I stand by it! My winter babies were out and about all the time, including during the Beast from the East. Still wouldn't have got any use out of snowsuit. Pramsuit and layers all the way.

Both were in the sling a lot too where a bulky snowsuit is against recommendations.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 11/10/2020 11:35

Also two of mine were born in winter and we like to get out and about so a snowsuit was needed! (See! Everyone is so opinionated!)

peonyrose87 · 11/10/2020 11:36

Thanks everyone! I'm not really offended by what they've said, more like it's my baby so I can do what I want 😂

And like others have said, people usually buy bigger sizes for babies so ensuring I have things for the first few weeks is reasonable. Also because we live so far from family and friends I can't rely on gifts in the first few weeks.

Glad to see most people have bought the same/think I need more.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 11/10/2020 11:37

What's the difference between a pramsuit and a snowsuit?

User27aw · 11/10/2020 11:37

I used a snowsuit from birth for my December baby.

ChristmasStocckings · 11/10/2020 11:38

I would stop buying newborn size cause it’s a bit risky. My baby never fit into anything in that size. They also grow so quickly! I would also not stock up to much on any particular style until you work out what you both like. I thought she would spend most of her time in zip suits but I’ve actually been using the bodysuits and leggings the most
