AIBU to be annoyed at people saying I'm buying too much for my baby

peonyrose87 · 11/10/2020 11:23

I sent my family a picture of some baby clothes I've bought, literally 6 sleep suits, maybe a dozen vests, a snow suit and two hats.

They're all saying I've bought too much and to slow down, that other people will buy me things, and I'll end up with two much.

The things I've bought are all newborn/first size, so are for the hospital bag and the first few weeks. And I've really not bought a lot? I'm 21 weeks so still have a long time to go obviously but if I see something and like it I pick it up.

We live three hours away from family and I don't like relying on getting things for other people so why is it unreasonable to make sure my baby has clothes?

My advice would be to make sure you have a few sleepsuits and vests in a few different sizes. You don't know what size the baby will be til they're here.

My dd1 was never in newborn sizes, she came home in 0-3 months and was in 3-6 months by 3 weeks old.
Dd2 was even bigger!! She came home in 3-6 month clothes. She spent her first night in just a 0-3 month vest and blankets, because the 0-3 month sleep suits were too short and squashed her toes.
My dds were exceptional though, you probably won't have quite such huge babies.

Do whatever you fancy with buying clothes. If you can afford it, and you want to, buy as many clothes as you like.

Sceptre86 · 12/10/2020 07:47

When I was expecting my dd I bought lots of neutral stuff in 0-3 and some newborn stuff. The rest I intended to buy once the baby was born as we didn't find out the sex. She was 5lb 10oz and dropped to 5lb so was in tiny baby clothes for ages that my dh was sent out to buy.

For my ds I did buy more newborn stuff, he turned out to be a whopper at 8lb 10oz and was in newborn for a day, poor thing couldn't stretch his legs properly so dh went and picked up the 0-3 clothes I had at home.

With my dd people bought her a lot of 3-6 or 6-9 clothes but as she was so small she couldn't wear the 3-6 until she was closer to 6 months and by then it was cold again so summer clothes were inappropriate.

Point is buy a little in each of the early sizes. You don't sound like you have too much to me.

@peonyrose87 I’m on the West Coast of Scotland and it’s freezing here in winter! Due our first baby next month and I have snowsuits etc ready lol. If I need them here then you definitely need them up there 😊 a lot of people underestimate just how cold it gets in Scotland in the winter 🙈 like you, we do a lot of walking and I don’t intend for that to stop when we have the baby 😊 Yes they might be impractical for going in and out of shops etc if you’re out for the day but I’m assuming you’re meaning for use when heading out for a few hours to be outdoors like I am?
People also keep giving me the “stop buying so much, you’ll get bought LOADS of presents” 🙄 we don’t have a huge family or big circle of friends around us so I’m not expecting much, if anything! Plus, I wouldn’t like to rely on other people buying things to make sure my baby has clothes 🤷🏻‍♀️ We’ve not found out if we’re having a boy or a girl so I’ve opted for lots of vests (both long sleeved and short sleeved) and neutral babygrows in Newborn/Up To 1 Month/0-3 months. Once baby is here and we know size etc then it’ll only take 10 minutes to do a quick online order and have other bits delivered that we need to top up on 😊

As other people have said, the advice and opinions are just getting started I’m afraid 🙈 I feel like as soon as my bump properly started showing I was fair game for any advice and opinions people wanted to give 🙄 People also like to ask lots of questions! I’m 37 weeks now and have just finished work (full time retail manager) and at least 8-10 times a day I’d have people walk up to me in work and ask “are you having a natural birth?” 🤔🤣 that was their first question! Not due date, boy/girl, first baby etc? But how I intended on baby coming out. Also had a woman come up to me and interrupt while I was serving another customer to tell me that if I have stitches I should dry my bits with a cold hairdryer everyday after my shower to stop infections 🤣 The poor older man I was serving looked horrified 🙈
@DappledThings I live in the north east of Scotland, a snow suit is needed!
Do you know(i didn't) that babies shouldn't wear them in car seats?

Livpool · 12/10/2020 07:58

I never received so much 'advice' from people when I was pregnant or when DS was a newborn. Most of it unsolicited.

Ignore the majority is my only suggestion and rant away if needed!

@RWK29 it's so cold up here!! And yeah we wouldn't put the snow suit on if planning on being in and out of shops! But we spend so much time outdoors.

We're the same as you and don't have a huge family or a large close friend network so I'm not expecting loads of gifts. Plus it's so nice to buy things 🥰 and we're not finding out what we're having either so lots of white sleep suits and vests etc are fine to buy.

@Nanny0gg yes I know that!

Are you in the UK?
Doubt you will need a snowsuit in March / April

Try not to buy to much newborn / first size.
Baby might be big.
Work out what the weather will be roughly when baby is born and the next few months. so March, April, May... In the UK, u wont need super thick winter clothes like what are in the shops atm

HotToCold · 12/10/2020 10:27

Depends where you live and what the normal weather is, obviously

Pipapple · 12/10/2020 10:29

Nice knitted cardigans, hats and booties a must with winter babes 😊 I also don't think you've bought enough clothes yet, 12 vests probably enough but not enough other layers. Mine also always wore socks.

peonyrose87 · 12/10/2020 10:42

@HotToCold I live in the north east of Scotland, a snow suit is absolutely needed. We wear hats and scarves up until June most years!

@Pipapple thanks! These are all on my list of things to buy ☺️

I listened to all the people who told me not to buy newborn because "the baby won't wear it for long" "you're going to have a big baby with your T1 diabetes" "you and her dad are tall" and she measured big all along. Well she was born a month early, was very dinky, and 0-3 drowned her for about 8 weeks so in hindsight I'd have ignored everyone. The outfit I'd picked as her "1st outfit" didn't fit until she was 10 weeks old Grin my sisters went out and got me some newborn bits so she could be comfier! People offer all kinds of advice, take what you find useful and ignore everything elseFlowers

FrenchtoEnglish · 12/10/2020 10:47

Yep. Buy whatever you want.

TiptopJ · 12/10/2020 11:52

Slightly off topic but just wait for all the "rod for your own back' comments, usually said when someone thinks you're cuddling your baby too much or God forbid you've found something that helps you get a bit more sleep! Nod and ignore is my best advice.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 12/10/2020 13:41

I had a Scottish winter baby, goodness yes he needed a snowsuit! He wore it every day.

I had a big baby, so straight into 0-3 months, which lasted for exactly a fortnight before he outgrew them.

You need loads of vests and sleep suits for the explosive poo situation anyway, and you can always pass them on.

People are so annoying when you're pregnant, telling you how it will be, based only on their experiences. The only thing that turned out to be true was the laundry - so much so often 🤣

Buying new things for a new baby is one of the loveliest activities known to womankind, so crack on, I say. Lucky baby 🥰🥰

Caspianberg · 12/10/2020 15:03

We get the same comments.
However
a) we hardly received any gifts, those we did are generally impractical or just extras ie a proper button designer shirt when he’s 5 months and wears sleepsuits/ vests/ leggings.
B) wrong sizes for season. Snowsuit in august size, now way too small.
C) as others have said, most things given just aren’t my taste. So I would rather buy things I like for him, and just use those as spares for emergencies. Shoot me.

I would def suggest not buying much in the sales for seasons ahead as you have no idea how they will grow yet. My 5 month old has flown though the sizes length wise, he’s squeezing the last few weeks maybe out of 6-9months, and is already in 9-12 for some bits. His newborn stuff lasted 3 days!

movingonup20 · 12/10/2020 15:20

If you are in Scotland you'll get a huge box of stuff from the government so don't buy newborn clothes. Really nice stuff too

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 13/10/2020 10:35

Buy whatever you like, the only advice i can give though is buy different sizes and keep them organised in sizes or you may find like me when you finally do organise it (a week before due in my case) you are fully organised up to age 1 and nothing 0-3 months ha ha xx You just enjoy your time and doing what you want :)
