To ask you to guess why DD's driving test didn't go ahead?

The one that took her 4 hours to book.

She was number 7327 in the queue despite being online at 8.00.02am in the day tests were released after Covid..Shock

No aliens, volcanoes or wrong type of snow involved. Grin

Gwan guess.

I've heard they're being VERY picky about the state of cars. My friend ( driving instructor) daisy the examiners were refusing to get in cars that had leaves on the floor so frankly I'm not at all suprised. And a dusty dashboard is grim at the best of times but with covid ... everything needs to be VERY clean and sterile!

Dugsbollox · 09/10/2020 17:40

God, that's a kicker. Mine seems permanently dusty, shiny plastics look nice but attact the dust terribly! Hope she's able to rebook/get a cancellation soonish.

hesaidshesaidwhat · 09/10/2020 17:48

I appreciate that the cars need to be clean but if they want to be that fussy then perhaps they should insist on seeing the car wiped down beforehand. Currently in most places there is approx a 4 month wait time for a retest, bearing this in mind I think that was very very unfair. Was it her car or her instructors? If instructors will they take responsibility?

hesaidshesaidwhat · 09/10/2020 17:49

Meant to say, your poor DD, hope she wasn't/isn't too upset. You sound very relaxed about it, although I suppose what can you do. I would be very annoyed - £62 down the drain!

GlassInEachHand · 09/10/2020 17:57

When DD wanted to take her test in her own car (pre-Covid) I took the view that there's no harm in creating a good first impression, so we both cleaned it to within an inch of its life, inside and out. You could have eaten your dinner off the dashboard. As it turned out she failed anyway and ended up passing in her instructor's car, and of course her own car has never been anything like as clean since... Grin

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/10/2020 18:01

It was her imstructir's car and he was very apologetic.

She wasn't that upset just a bit shocked, think the adrenaline was coursing through her still.

She's just managed to rebook for December.

It was perfect weather for driving today, just gutted that the opportunity was missed.

But we now have more practice time - we've just been out, she's a good driver, I'm confident in her. Though not confident enough to prevent an "interminable" wait on a trivial thread by arising around on my phone whilst in the pasnber seat Wink

is he going to refund her then seeing as it was his car

Mooserp · 09/10/2020 18:09

I was thinking the same - surely the instructor needs to pay?

Pelleas · 09/10/2020 18:15

Dusty Dashboard - Dusty Bin's sexier older brother Grin

(for those old enough to remember 3-2-1)

1forAll74 · 09/10/2020 18:20

Vandals have been going around, slashing all car tyres in sight.

ddl1 · 09/10/2020 18:38

Examiner had to wait for results of a Covid test?

If got a dusty bin somewhere.

I found it n a charity shop and thought it was too weird not to get it Grin

Not seen it since I moved house though so it must be in a box.

I’ve also got a bully Grin

ExclamationPerfume · 09/10/2020 18:57

She's lucky it only took 4 hours to book. It took me three whole days. It's now booked for January nothing at all for before that.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/10/2020 18:59

@RevolutionRadio

I suggest you can get some charcoal biscuits for that. Blush

NandosPeriometer · 09/10/2020 19:13

She was lucky to be 7327
Dd and ds were 20,000+ and 30,000+ in the queue and were logged in ahead of time. Luckily they have November slots

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/10/2020 20:20

You can fail your test because the dashboard is dusty? Shock

doctorhamster · 09/10/2020 20:26

I was going for a meteor flattening the test centre. That's what she should tell people...sounds way better than dusty dashboard.

safariboot · 09/10/2020 20:28

Was the opportunity offered to clean the car on the spot (if the student had had suitable cleaner available)? Or is it a case of examiner sees dirt, examiner says no?

AdoptedBumpkin · 09/10/2020 20:29

The examiner robbed a bank.

safariboot · 09/10/2020 20:30

PS: I think the most ridiculous case I heard, the instructor terminated the test about 100 yards from the test centre on the return (so after basically everything has been done!) because the fuel warning light came on.

safariboot · 09/10/2020 20:31

Examiner terminated, I mean.

GeorgeTheFirst · 09/10/2020 20:35

It doesn't matter how confident you are ,you can't be on your phone while supervising her driving, because you're in charge of the car (you know that right?)

giantangryrooster · 09/10/2020 20:48

Sorry I'm foreign, and need to get this spelled out. Was it actual dust on the dashboard or is it an euphemism for something else?

Surely dust unless blocking the window isn't an issue, can the examiner actually get away with this?

I think you'll find the op said exactly that!

If it hasn't been cleaned, the examiner could potentially be sitting in a vehicle that has had multiple people with asymptomatic (or in the case of the instructor, symptomatic) covid leaving a fine misting of virus particles over the surfaces.

As examiners tend to be older (and male) they're not very likely to want to take that risk multiple times a day - or just the once.
