Anyone watched The Comey Rule? We watched it over the last couple of nights - bought it on Amazon Prime for $4. The guy who plays Trump is great. I'm surprised it's not getting more publicity.

BruceAndNosh · 15/10/2020 00:24

I haven't watched any of the Barrett hearings but judging by the updates online, she seems to be doing a Judgely version of No Comment to most questions.

lionheart · 15/10/2020 06:25

I don't think you can get it in the UK yet, HoldMyLobster.

The Trumpies are telling each other to leave Twitter for Parler (which I've never heard of before):

'Parler is an unbiased social platform focused on open dialogue and user engagement. We allow free speech and do not censor ideas, political parties or ideologies. We protect your privacy and will never sell your personal data.'

Sane and patriotic people on Twitter are overjoyed.

Calif. gov should declare votes in those boxes null and void - that's what the GOP would do if the shoe was on the other foot.

California Republican Party says it will not comply with state's cease and desist order on ballot drop boxes.
www.cnn.com/2020/10/14/politics/california-republicans-ballot-drop-boxes-cease-and-desist/index.html

... A spokesperson for California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, a Democrat, told CNN his office "is in the process of reviewing the CA Republican Party's response letter."

Casting the unofficial boxes as "wrong no matter who is doing it," Padilla had explained to CNN's Chris Cuomo on "Prime Time" Monday evening that the operation doesn't have a "chain of custody, and we don't have the requirements or regulations for these fake drop boxes as you do for the official drop boxes."

"We have a ton of requirements on official drop boxes," he continued. "That's where we should be driving voters to."

The deadline for the California Republican Party to comply or respond to the order is Thursday night.

I have only watched clips of it, but I imagine this is the case...

'Watching some of the Supreme Court hearing it reminds me of someone performing badly at an interview and not knowing the basics of the job, but sitting there smiling because their father owns the company...'

Roussette · 15/10/2020 10:24

All she answers to everything is...
'that's a matter of policy debate, I can't express a view'

To these questions..
Climate change, do you think it exists?
is it wrong to seperate young children from their parent to deter immigration?
Is it illegal to intimidate voters at the Polls?
Do you think voting discrimination still exists?

Grrrpredictivetex · 15/10/2020 11:01

So it turns out Barron Trump also had COVID. Is this news now coming out for a sympathy vote?

Melania Trump reveals son Barron had coronavirus and says her symptoms hit her 'all at once' news.sky.com/story/melania-trump-reveals-teenage-son-barron-had-coronavirus-and-says-her-symptoms-hit-her-all-at-once-12104278

BBC 2 tonght 9 pm
The Trump Show 1/3

Looks interesting!

New series. Four years after Donald Trump unexpectedly became president of the most powerful nation on earth, this documentary series tells the inside story of this most extraordinary presidency, with contributions from key players including Steve Bannon, Sean Spicer, Omarosa Manigault Newman and Anthony Scaramucci. The first episode charts the first 18 months, covering Trump's change of lifestyle as he moved into the White House, his fraught relationship with the press and his downgrading of White House briefings - preferring instead to talk directly to the public through Twitter.

Right - it doesn't matter what she replies. The decision has been made to confirm her, and it will happen. It's a done deal. I'm not even listening to the hearings - what's the point?
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/10/2020 16:07

She was unable to answer a basic question about Amendment 1 of the constitution. This woman is not qualified for the job.

Roussette · 15/10/2020 16:23

There is no point, you're absolutely right. I only pick up clips on Twitter and that's bad enough!

AcrossthePond55 · 15/10/2020 16:38

Per CNN, two members of Kamala's campaign staff have tested positive. For safety's sake her travel is being curtailed.

www.cnn.com/2020/10/15/politics/kamala-harris-campaign-travel-coronavirus/index.html

AcrossthePond55 · 15/10/2020 16:41

From the article:

"Neither of these people have had contact with Vice President Biden, Senator Harris or any other staffers since testing positive or in the 48 hours prior to their positive test results," O'Malley Dillon said.

The Biden campaign's immediate disclosure of the positive results was in stark contrast with how Trump's campaign and White House have handled positive coronavirus tests from Trump himself as well as top campaign officials and aides. Trump's White House still has not disclosed when Trump had most recently tested negative for coronavirus prior to his positive test.

Now that's showing transparency and just exactly which candidate really cares about the American People.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

Oh, she knows. She knows exactly how she interprets our Bill of Rights. She just doesn't want to answer for fear that her agenda will show.

What disqualifies her from the job isn't her legal knowledge. I'm sure it's prodigious. What disqualifies her is that she has an agenda 'sent from God' and therefore the 'divine go-ahead' to impose it on the Country.

Grrrpredictivetex · 15/10/2020 17:38

"What disqualifies her from the job isn't her legal knowledge. I'm sure it's prodigious. What disqualifies her is that she has an agenda 'sent from God' and therefore the 'divine go-ahead' to impose it on the Country."

Isn't there anyway to oppose this woman?

Roussette · 15/10/2020 17:53

Nope.
That's the problem

In practical terms, no.

The Repugs in the Senate have the numbers to approve her even if every Dem votes no. Unless four Repug Senators jump ship and vote with the Dems she'll be confirmed.

All the Dems can do is continually bring up why she shouldn't be confirmed based on her having an agenda she wants to enact and why this confirmation is unethical based on past precedent. Precedent the Repugs used themselves to block Merrick Garland.

The final vote is expected to be 22 Oct and I expect she'll be confirmed. There aren't Repug 'ship jumpers' and unless there's some HUGE skeleton in her closet it's a done deal.

giletrouge · 15/10/2020 18:10

But when the Dems win the election they can re-constitute the court or change its powers, is that right? Esp if they get the congress and the senate?
If I'm talking bollocks it's because I'm knackered so not checking my terms before posting. Extenuating circs here.

HoldMyLobster · 15/10/2020 18:21

giletrouge - good question. IIRC, if the Democrats control the Senate, they can expand the number of judges in the court, then appoint their chosen judges. I don't think controlling the House makes a difference but I could well be wrong.

HoldMyLobster · 15/10/2020 18:23

A question for others who are actually in the US. Have you participated in any polling? I received an automated phone call the other day and for the first time I actually answered all the questions.

I can't remember if they said which poll they were calling on behalf of, so each time I now see poll results being released, I wonder if I'm one of the respondents.

Supreme Court tenure is for life. A Justice can only be removed by impeachment for 'just cause' (ie malfeasance, incapacity, or crimes).

Congress has no power to change the Constitutional 'reach' of the SCOTUS. They have the final judicial 'say' in cases brought before them. That's part of the balance of powers. The Founding Fathers expected that SCOTUS would be made up of impartial and balanced Justices and that politics would never play a part in its makeup or decisions. Once again, we are dealing with their concept of 'honour', one that simply doesn't exist anymore. Or is very rare in political circles.

As far as 're-constituting' the Court if you mean 'firing' a Justice and replacing them, no, see above.

What is NOT in the Constitution is the exact number of Justices. There have been as few as six. But nine has been the 'traditional' number since the mid-1800s. Anyway, a Dem Admin and Dem led Congress could decide to 'pack the Court' which is the term used for adding Justices. I think the Dems might see this as a 'slippery slope' and I honestly don't know if it's seriously being considered or just political rhetoric (from both sides).

I haven't, Lobster. But then I usually don't answer my phone unless I either recognize the number or it shows a name.
