I HATE my cylinder vacuum cleaner. It does a good job but I hate cylinderd for several reasons. Bought in a moment of madness 15 years ago.

Can't afford to replace just for the sake of it.

What are you putting up with until it breaks down?

The integrated dishwasher that doesn't clean and is now a filing cabinet for my WFH stuff. Everyone else swears by them.

The stainless steel oven. I just can't get it clean. Constantly looks crap no matter what I do.

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:53

@BessieSurtees

Your vacuum cleaner is still going strong after 15 years? What make is that I’ve never had a one pick up for that long.

My kettle, it’s not fast, the lid sticks, the spout sometimes spills and the switch doesn’t always catch. Bought for fashion, it cost a fortune. I keep it because it matches the toaster, which is great.

It's a Miele cat and dog.

I must confess I haven't used it for the whole 15 years as I went back to the upright the Miele was to replace. I heard the Miele was good for pet hair.

So I haven't been using it the whole time. We got it out of the loft when the upright finally gave in. I suppose I should be glad I have a working vacuum. It was made before all those energy restrictions, so not sure I could even get a decent upright now anyway.

My dishwasher. It does a great job but I can never be in the same room as it is like having some kind of industrial machinery going. The noise! It drives me demented. So much so that I have actually asked for a new one for Christmas. DH thinks I’m joking but I’m not.
I like my dishwasher and wouldn't be without it, but it is a noisy son of a bitch....luckily it's in a cupboard, so i can just close the door.

However, when you first switch it on and start the cycle, it sounds like the opening bars of 'You're So Vain', by Carly Simon.
Which I do quite like.

@TitsOutForHarambe

My Kmart steam mop. It meekly puffs out a pathetic little croak of steam. It's basically had it by now but I can't really afford a new steam mop so close to Christmas... So we push on.

I haven't said anything to DH yet because I'm afraid that he will get the wrong end of the stick and think it's a hint for my Christmas gift (absolute sweetheart of a man but not good at gifts).

LOL! Oh yes, be careful when you mention the mop!!!

My toaster. It always burns whenever I’m low on bread, despite me never altering the settings. It is spiteful.
I truly believe appliances might be sentient!

@HeronLanyon

toria658 snap ! My washing machine lies about time remaining (30 or so random minutes added to some cycles for no obvious reason). Interminable cycles - lost my old ability to do quickish hot wash. Never ever will I allow anyone else to ever choose a washing machine for me. Trouble is this one shows no sign of conking out.
Always the bloody way isn't it?!

I put up with a Dyson upright for years because DH wanted it.

I have a Henry now and adore it - so do the kids tbh, he has to be tickled with his brush and given a goodnight kiss before he’s allowed to go to bed in the cupboard (they are 2 and 5. It’d be weird if they were teens Wink)

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:56

@Junjulaug

Our Everhot range cooker. I HATE it. We moved into our house a year ago, and it was there. The previous owners did literally everything else in the house on the cheap except this stupid £12k cooker. No other cooker in the kitchen, so only means to cook. Not powerful enough to heat the room, so we froze last winter and boiled in the summer as we couldn’t switch it off as no other cooking facility. Hob is only big enough for 2 saucepans at a time and needs at least 45 minutes to heat up to a cooking temperature, ditto the oven. Why does anyone have these?. The good news is that when I get a new kitchen next year I will sell it and as they retail well 2nd hand it will contribute a large amount towards the new kitchen.
Had a range we had to suffer at an old house. Absolutely dreadful! Uneven heat for baking too.

mellongoose · 06/10/2020 07:56

Henry. We fell out years ago and he's not been the same since. Heavy, cumbersome, always falling over, never follows me around doors. Also makes the house smell like dog hair, despite the use of zoflora!!

My steam cleaner. I'm sure it just dampens the floor and pushes the dirt around, rather than pick it up. Can't store a mop and bucket unless I ditch the steam cleaner and also cannot abide waste, so am stuck 🤣

peakygal · 06/10/2020 07:56

My fridge freezer! Its the only appliance in my house that isn't new.. I brought it from my previous home..I'm not one for just dumping something that works and this thing is still working perfectly...Almost 11 years later. It bugs me because you can tell it isn't new and it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to all my other shiny white appliances Hmm

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:57

@PracticingPerson

I have a double oven but the small one is broken. We didn't get it fixed because 'it'll need replacing soon, it's not worth it'. More than two years ago!

Agree some machines are deliberately spiteful. If I got it fixed today, the main section would break tomorrow.

Machines rule our lives! We've just been having car nightmares too!

@MadauntofA

My dyson too - heavy, falls over at every opportunity, and is an absolute arse when it comes to removing and attaching the hose sucker. Hate it, hate it, hate it, and it won't die!
I am very impractical and can never understand how things fit together - even jigsaws and stuff. I hate complicated stuff and get furious with connecting hoses and things if they aren't simple.
OP posts:
BalanceGreen · 06/10/2020 08:02

Our washing machine - it's a 'good' brand but can spin at high speeds any longer and a repairman said it wasn't worth fixing. We are currently using it at low spin as it washes OK and I can't face buying another one.

NastyBlouse · 06/10/2020 08:03

My two bêtes noires...

Robot vacuum cleaner. It's rubbish -- won't map properly, gets stuck on imaginary cliffs, has a dust-bin the size of a matchbox, loses the wifi connection about every 20 minutes, gets wedged under the toilet and starts bellowing for assistance, and has a tendency to smear half-picked-up dust all over the floor like a cat dragging its arse around. But it cost £400 so I'm having to work with its 'development issues' for now.

Dishwasher. I can't do anything about this because it's built in and we rent this flat. It's one of those dish-drawer things. They're apparently very expensive. Well, it's shit. The inside is titchy so half the time you can't fit a meal's worth of cooking stuff and plates in one go. I have to set it to the 70 degrees ultra-bastard wash for it to be in any way effective, and that programme takes well over three hours. It makes grumbly grinding noises throughout and my big pan won't fit so I have to wash it by hand.

BeBesideTheSea · 06/10/2020 08:04

Electric hob with buttons to change the temperature. So if you want to switch off 1 ring when you, for example, lift the pan to drain the carrots, but leave the others on, you have to press the button 9 times. Designed by someone who only ever used one ring at a time.

Hate it, but can’t justify replacing it

TitsOutForHarambe · 06/10/2020 08:07

@BeBesideTheSea

I think we have the same hob. I suspect it was designed by someone who doesn't cook much.

Malin52 · 06/10/2020 08:09

Toaster. It has a heating element that only toasts about 2/3s of the bread, one side goes fast than other and the difference between not toasted and burned to a crisp is about 3 seconds so you have to stand over it and stop and start it and move the bread around in a complex feat of geometry.

We rent and it came with the house and we are about to buy a property so I'm not replacing it. It was aged when we arrived and this is our 4th year so the bloody thing has some staying power.

On the other hand the Nespresso that is now in in its 9th year, used 4 times daily and has had its vital organs replaced at least once has a death rattle. When that goes the house will mourn.

BillywigSting · 06/10/2020 08:12

Another one for vacuum cleaner and here.

Got a cheap (read crap) one when I first moved, it still hasn't died but god I want it to it's bloody rubbish. It's a tiny little bissel with a dustbin the size of a pea and a dodgy filter on the back that keeps falling off. The hose also doesn't stay stuck in its little groove thing so it just flops about all over the place. The main bit falls over every time you ask it to turn a corner. I loathe it. But I also can't really justify a new one.

Ditto tumble dryer. Have an inefficient vented one with a too small drum. Would love a nice big condenser one.

DuaneBenziesvoice · 06/10/2020 08:18

The kettle. Our old faithful died a couple of years ago after 15 years faithful service. We bought a Sage one which the reviews said was "quiet and reliable"
It was quiet for about the first 20 uses, it now does a low roar whilst boiling.
When it boils. It has buttons to set the optimum temperature for different teas and then a start button. Sometimes you press the start button, it beeps and then turns itself off. This continues about 8 times before it relents and does as it's fucking told.

I hate our kettle, it's a right twat.

Wexone · 06/10/2020 08:22

@bluechameleon my microwave is the very same. it was in the house when i moved in with himself 12 years ago. Everything else has been replaced so waiting for this to break. Can never get the time right on it, but homself says he no problem with it. To everyone talking about their kettles, best thing i ever did was install an electric tap, constanly have hot water no falshing light or noise when it on aswell as no kettle clurteering up my counter space. Plus have not had to replace it in 5 years where when had a kettle replaced it nearly every year or two.

RUOKHon · 06/10/2020 08:23

Our kettle. It’s so shit and has lasted for about ten years. I fantasise about it ‘having an accident’ while DH is at work, but I don’t know if I’d get away with it. I hate it so, so much.

Poppingnostopping · 06/10/2020 08:23

I have (in our doer upper house) an old 80's cooker. It's terrible and the children moan about it all the time. The electric ignition is broken so we have to use matches, which I was brought up with but they find rather primitive and there's always a chance of the flame leaping out and singeing something. I find it quite funny but I am going to get a new one when I have the whole kitchen redone. To me, it s a funny reminder of the past.

Imbc · 06/10/2020 08:28

Our toaster’s lowest time setting makes the toast much darker than I like (and I like it a completely normal level of light brown toastiness). If I happen to be standing nearby and remember in time, I can pop it up before it’s finished but this is rare. I fucking hate that toaster!

AppleStars · 06/10/2020 08:30

My iron. I got a cordless one, it's absolutely useless. It stays warm enough to do about a quarter of a garment then bleeps and flashes red demanding to be put back on the base to heat up again. I hate it passionately. But I was so determined to have this specific one that we drove to a Curry's in another city to pick it up so I am eating my words. The one joy of lockdown is rarely needing to use it anymore!!

GreasyFryUp · 06/10/2020 08:30

@GobletOfIre if you are low on bread the loaf will be drier than when you bought it. Drier bread toasts faster hence it's burning on the same setting that was fine when the loaf was fresh.
