What appliance are you putting up with?

I HATE my cylinder vacuum cleaner. It does a good job but I hate cylinderd for several reasons. Bought in a moment of madness 15 years ago.

Can't afford to replace just for the sake of it.

What are you putting up with until it breaks down?

Oh titsout I like that Simpsons reference a lot ! I think I have unwittingly been on both sides of that reasoning before ‘Doh’.

WeAllHaveWings · 06/10/2020 06:59

Shark vacuum. Hate it, but hate to waste money more and dont know what else to buy to cope with labrador hair.

nannynick · 06/10/2020 07:04

Dishwasher, great for 3 years and now every 3rd or 4th use it does not pump out fully. Replaced the filters and still does the same thing. Run cleaner through it, no difference.
Now just putting up with it.

MummaGiles · 06/10/2020 07:07

The crappy dishwasher that was put in the fitted kitchen when the house always built in 2008. It does a really crap job. Hates bowls. Would replace it but at some point we might extend and redo the kitchen so don’t want to replace it to have to change it again.

Mindymomo · 06/10/2020 07:11

My Hotpoint grill, can only cook on full, no temperature dial. My fridge ices up at back when on correct setting, then you turn it down and you get water coming out the back. Need to replace fridge, but have to take out cupboards to get a bigger one. My washer dryer doesn’t dry anymore, it’s not worth paying to get it fixed, so will put up with it. Microwave is old and bits keep coming off. Replaced Dyson with a Shark, good move.

doctorhamster · 06/10/2020 07:16

Washing machine. It has a couple of annoying but unfortunately not terminal things wrong with it. It still cleans clothes though so I can't justify replacing it.

AuntyFungal · 06/10/2020 07:19

Smeg fridge freezer - the retro freestanding type.

Shit door seals - the amount of times the doors have been left open...

Form over function.

bluechameleon · 06/10/2020 07:22

The microwave. DH bought the cheapest one Tesco sold when ours broke a few years ago. It has dials so you can't set a specific time, and if you set a time less than a minute it just stops.

mummyh2016 · 06/10/2020 07:23

Our extractor fan. Had a new kitchen last year, the fan that was on display in the shop had been discontinued so we ordered a different model. It so loud, it sounds like an airplane is taking off in our kitchen every time it's used. So it doesn't get used. Such a waste of money.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 06/10/2020 07:24

My dishwasher. It does a great job but I can never be in the same room as it is like having some kind of industrial machinery going. The noise! It drives me demented. So much so that I have actually asked for a new one for Christmas. DH thinks I’m joking but I’m not.

Oodlesofnoodles20 · 06/10/2020 07:26

My iron, it just flattens the creases instead of ironing them out.

NoSquirrels · 06/10/2020 07:28

Both the fridge freezer and the cooker. Both shit, both inherited from the people we bought the house from, an elderly couple who redesigned the kitchen in a superficially stylish yet completely impractical way. To replace them would mean accepting we’re not redesigning the kitchen, so they stay and I curse their broken doors, crappy seals, shit heat rings and annoying positions because I refuse to lose hope...

HappenedForAReisling · 06/10/2020 07:30

the display telling lies about the time remaining

Google "washing machine minute"

boriselbow · 06/10/2020 07:33

The TV in our bedroom. We never planned on having a TV in there but when we replaced the one in the living room we decided it might be useful for if/when one of us wants to watch something that no-one else does. It seems that we forgot that the reason we replaced it was that it's half dead. It has been the source of huge disappointment when I've taken myself upstairs with drinks and snacks to binge watch something only to spend half an hour wiggling wires, unplugging and replugging etc to no avail. It works often enough to feel like there's a point to keeping it and I can't really justify buying a new one for the bedroom- so I now have a TV plus loads of additional wires for things plugged in to try to work it cluttering up the room but can't rely on being able to watch it.

I really should just ditch it!

Whatisapension · 06/10/2020 07:35

Shark liftaway. It is so heavy, difficult to steer and gets stuck on shaggy rugs. Feels like an industrial hoover but doesn't pick up that great on hard floor, it takes a few times going over the same pieces if they are slightly bigger than a crumb (I have cats who love to leave pieces of treats all over). I have had it four years so it feels like a waste to get rid.

I did cave and buy a gtech hylite when it was on offer recently, and considering how flimsy it feels it picks up much better on hard floor so I use that in between now.

Sometimes, for the 'proper' cleaning, I use the gtech all over, then just carry the shark liftaway part around the house to do all of the corners, edges behind furniture etc. It's easier to hoover twice, than to do the whole house with the shark.

@seayork2020

Not now but I have decided I hate dishwashers, they are great in theory but don't work for me (I don't mean a specific one just in general)

We only got a new kettle a few months ago but I want a silent, fast one that still has the temp control.

I am not a fan of our barrel dyson but then DH uses it not me so I am not too bothered

That's interesting! Been considering a dishwasher for years. DH doesn't want one. Maybe I should do more research so I don't end up with yet another unloved appliance!

@HeronLanyon

My kettle. Unbeknownst to me, when bought, it has an awful and wholly unnecessary and ugly blue light element around the bottom which comes on when it’s turned on. Really bright and ugly. It’s also really noisy. I’ve given it a year or so. So hoping it breaks soon. Or hoping the light breaks (I’ve tried to detach the ring but can’t without potential dangerous damage).

My iron which is black. Trouble is I can’t see into the water section to see if or how much water is in there. I have to put bright lamp on to check. Hate it. So stupid.

Noisy kettles are awful. We've got one of those!

The iron sounds badly designed. I always thought products were heavily researched and tested on target groups but you do have to wonder sometimes.

The washing machine. We only bought it about 3 years ago, so can't replace for now reason. DH wouldn't get a Bosch at the time because our last Bosch one broke, but this one (LG) I HATE! It's noisy, and if there a piece of clothing stuck in the door when we run it, it doesn't stop the cycle running. It runs, and then water leaks everywhere. HATE IT but it's not old so I can't replace it. Just keep hoping it will break.

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:38

@Catsup

A mirrored door microwave 🙄 I've probably spent more time polishing the bloody thing in the last 6yr than the rest of my house combined. I just know it'll outlive the rest of my kitchen appliances out of spite.
HahaHA you just know it will! Isn't that always the way?

Defaultuser · 06/10/2020 07:39

Not an appliance but I hate my couch. Hard, high backed and with a short seat. Perfect for getting up and down from carrying a baby but rubbish for lounging on. I had to go through chemo on that stupid couch.

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:40

@polkadotpixie

I hate my condenser washer-dryer. I only have it because it came with the house (new build) and there's no room for a separate dryer but it's absolutely shit, just steams the clothes to death rather than actually drying them
How ANNOYING!!!! At least my appliance actually does do the job. I think you deserve a new dryer.

A Dyson handed down from MIL, it's old and weighs a ton but DH loves it, consequently he does all the hoovering as it's too heavy for me.

ProperVexed · 06/10/2020 07:43

@WeAllHaveWings I have 2 labradors. The best hoover I have found for their hair is a Vax. It was about £100 in Argos a few years ago. It's suck us so powerful that it almost pulls the carpet from the floor. Downside ( there always is one, ) is that it is flimsy and plastic bits like the carry handle break.

Meanwhile, to get back on thread, I hate my washing machine. The 30 minute quick wash has a slow spin so you have to do another spin after it, and the best 40 wash is 1 hour 45 mins. Bloody ridiculous. There are also 4 programmers that take over 4 hours. Does anyone actually ever use these? I bet a washing machine company that designs a washing machine with about 3 good, fast cycles only would make a fortune!

gurteee · 06/10/2020 07:43

@toria658

DH took it upon himself to select and buy our replacement cheap and nasty washing machine ( evidently; I was busy at work, so he organised the removal of my broken but beloved Samsung 39 minute 60 degree wash and replaced it with mechanical ineptitude on a magnificent level, according to DH this process saved me time Hmm ).

Tiny porthole, long cycles unconvinced by the wash quality, and will the bloody thing break down? No, it won’t. 6 tedious years of long cycles, squishing in dog bedding, it plods onwards, the display telling lies about the time remaining and the ominous squeak never ever degenerates into a terminal illness.....

The washing machine saga is regularly brought up and DH has resolved he will never ever buy a household item over $100 on his own again.

A more magnanimous person might say that if this is the biggest crime he has committed in nearly twenty years, I should have more perspective, but then I’d have to be magnanimous and when it comes to dog bedding this is impossible.

Gosh what a rant ....

I hear your frustration! Make him do all the washing during the lifetime of that machine.

My DH kindly does most of the vacuuming here esp dragging the big lump up the stairs. Which is extra-kind of him because I was the one who went ahead and bought it Blush

@Mummyoflittledragon

My tumble dryer. After we had an extension we couldn’t vent it outside. So I have the darn vent pipe is inside. Yes, I could get a condensor dryer but they don’t last and what a waste of money. Gah!
That's irritating! We have a condenser. First one was Beko. Got about 7 or 8 years out of that with Dh having to change a heating element at one point.

Now using an Indesit which is working well so far.
