To think I’m not old just because I think the music on Radio One is garbage?

I had to run an errand with a colleague today. The radio in the car was set to Radio One and I immediately turned it over to Radio Two. I commented that I can’t stand listening to Radio One anymore because I don’t like most of the current music they play, most of the time I have no idea what the song is about or I can’t understand what they are singing/rapping about! For example, anything by Stormzy and that song by Ramz singing about his ‘ting from Barking’. I mean, what does that even mean?!

Colleague then accused me of being ‘old’ because I don’t like ‘modern’ music.

I am 33, he is 21. I enjoy a wide and varied range of music from the 60s through to present day in lots of different genres. Just not most of the rubbish which is played on Radio One nowadays!

AIBU to think I’m not old just because I think that music is garbage?

I'm with you. Although at 43 I'm probably old as well!! But I never liked it, even when I WAS young!!

Gatehouse77 · 05/10/2020 13:20

Nope.

Nor am I trying to be 'cool' because I do still listen to Radio 1 and am way out of their desired demographic.

PolytheneHam · 05/10/2020 13:21

6 Music all the way

Enb76 · 05/10/2020 13:21

Radio 1 was only ever any good for the chart on Sundays.

Frequentcarpetflyer · 05/10/2020 13:21

Rubbish....

MissMarplesHandbag · 05/10/2020 13:23

Radio 1 is the only radio station I listen to, I like it! Each to their own and thankfully we have a plethora of different radio stations to cater to all our varied tastes 👍🏻

IHaveAGreyLamp · 05/10/2020 13:24

That being said, maybe I am old? I do rather enjoy Pop Master of a morning and then a good old debate on the Jeremy Vine show Blush

By that standard, I was old at about age 11, when I didn't swoon over the popular boy band that all the other girls my age adored. They were embarrassing, and I didn't enjoy their music at all.

(There were only two of us in our group who didn't, and we ended up being best friends for a while based largely on our shared disgust for that band!)

Exactly and maybe I should point this out to my colleague! It was more about being called old at 33 that got me Grin

I don't like radio one either op and I'm the same age as you.
Was hardly into it years ago because I wasn't really one for mainstream music either and I also think a majority on pop music these days are utter crap in comparison with the 70s 80s and 90s

M0mmzee · 05/10/2020 13:27

Radio 1 has always been for lowest common denominator in my opinion.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/10/2020 13:27

I prefer Absolute Radio over any of the BBC radio stations because they seem to play a variety of music and I like the DJs. Even when I was young, when I was in my teens, I didn't listen to Radio One because it was crap!

Thisisnotnormal69 · 05/10/2020 13:29

Oh come on, you know it’s just because you’re old! (and I say that as someone who also thinks radio 1 is “crap” Grin )

Previous generations never “get” the current popular music and never have (as a general rule). I also agree it’s shit but Hmm it is what it is, they like it!

Meandyouandyouandme · 05/10/2020 13:31

Yep 6Music all the way, new music and old music and for all ages, I listen to it and I’m 49 and my DC in their 20s listen to it.

killerofmen · 05/10/2020 13:33

I've been too old for radio 1 since I was about 25. It's mostly rubbish and the banter... Envy

I used to work with a very vain woman who was nearly 50. She listened to radio 1 in an attempt to look young.

Hingeandbracket · 05/10/2020 13:33

I can't stand the music on R1 - in fact the only thing worse is the music on R2!

Seriously79 · 05/10/2020 13:38

Were you in their car - or yours?

I'd be fuming if someone got in my car and turned the radio over.

But yes, I do agree with you. Radio 1 is crap.

nevernotstruggling · 05/10/2020 13:40

It's awful but we have it on in the mornings for the dds. I want them to have some cultural connect with their peers.

There was a piece that went on for weeks about peeling the lids off yoghurt ffs.

The music is dire but it's the mumble rap that's the worst.

My 13 year old niece tells me r1 is only ever good when they do the chart countdown as 'no one actually downloads the awful music anyway' 😂

VioletCharlotte · 05/10/2020 13:42

I feel like there needs to be something in between radio one and radio two. Radio one is aimed at a very young audience, but radio two is so dull! I don't like commercial stations as I can't stand the adverts.

madcatladyforever · 05/10/2020 13:43

I grew up in the 70's, I don't get anything about music now. It unintelligible.

garlictwist · 05/10/2020 13:45

I cannot bear Radio 1, apart from dance anthems.

Plus the chat seems to consist of reading out texts from listeners ("big phat dirty bass" says Joe on his way to Costa on the A66"). It's lazy and boring.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 13:46

I'm 54. I had these conversations with my Dad in the 80s. Some of it's ok. Most of it is rehashed versions of what's been before.
Radio 1 was actually unlistenable AOR shite until about 7 pm in the the 80s anyway . Until cool stuff from that time of night bled into more mainstream radio.
It's part of growing up.
Listen to 6 Music instead.

Holothane · 05/10/2020 13:48

The music has been garbage since 1989 for about five years utter crap them some decent house stuff, but since 2000 garnished.im 54 though.

contrmary · 05/10/2020 13:51

I used to have to listen to Radio 1 because it was played in the office. I could bear it until I was in my mid-twenties, because at least a handful of the tracks were listenable to. But it became all about "new music" as we were told dozens of times per day. "New music" meaning the same few artists, "new music" forgetting that new does not necessarily equal good.

Radio 1 seems to be aimed at 12-25 year olds, which is a ridiculously wide range if you think about it. A 30 year old might like the same classic songs and albums as a 50 or 60 year old. No way in hell a 25 year old likes the same music as a 12 year old, unless they are completely immature.

WiggleSquiggle · 05/10/2020 13:55

I found a few years ago I suddenly couldn’t stand any of the music on R1, it’s bloody awful and had to turn it off. I’m only 30, but it seems I’m old too. Grin
