To think I’m not old just because I think the music on Radio One is garbage?

IHaveAGreyLamp · 05/10/2020 13:18

I had to run an errand with a colleague today. The radio in the car was set to Radio One and I immediately turned it over to Radio Two. I commented that I can’t stand listening to Radio One anymore because I don’t like most of the current music they play, most of the time I have no idea what the song is about or I can’t understand what they are singing/rapping about! For example, anything by Stormzy and that song by Ramz singing about his ‘ting from Barking’. I mean, what does that even mean?!

Colleague then accused me of being ‘old’ because I don’t like ‘modern’ music.

I am 33, he is 21. I enjoy a wide and varied range of music from the 60s through to present day in lots of different genres. Just not most of the rubbish which is played on Radio One nowadays!

AIBU to think I’m not old just because I think that music is garbage?

@VioletCharlotte I share your thoughts v much

LonelyFromCorona · 05/10/2020 14:03

Your colleague is spot on. You're just getting with old. They play increasing amounts of Grime/UK Rap/Drill music, which is very popular with teens, students, early 20s. A 30+ year old female, probably not...

Move to Heart or Radio 2.

LittleMissLockdown · 05/10/2020 14:03

Ah crap I can't stand radio 1, does that mean I'm already old, I've not even made it to 30 yet. Blush Ah well I guess it's all down hill from here but at least the music will be good. Grin

unmarkedbythat · 05/10/2020 14:05

Ah well, to him you are old. He'd think I was ancient.

YANBU though, Radio One is crap. Crappy crappy crap.

Ohtherewearethen · 05/10/2020 14:05

Oh it's dreadful. I cannot stand it. The utter nonsense the presenters come out with is just embarrassing. None of them could pronounce a 't' if their lives depended on it. Even the news sounds like something from Newsround. Complete drivel. They play the same few shit songs over and over and over.

LonelyFromCorona · 05/10/2020 14:06

"The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. Its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers. "

You're just too old for Grime and pop like Billie Eilish sadly.

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 05/10/2020 14:13

When I was a teen getting ready for a night out I still avoided Radio one on a Friday and Saturday night. It was awful 20 years ago and it's just as awful now. Midweek it's sometimes not so bad but it does seem to be all too similar stuff.

AuntMasha · 05/10/2020 14:17

You’re never too old for Grime. Smile

Radio One has always been regarded as shite, even when I was a teen.

AuntMasha · 05/10/2020 14:19

@PolytheneHam

6 Music all the way
This, and I adore Tom Robinson who is a hero.
Flaunch · 05/10/2020 14:20

You know you’re really old when you start listening to Five Live or Radio 4 Grin

I always feel quite sorry for the youth of today when I hear grime or drill. When I was 12-25 it was all about rave, then house & trance. It used to give me goosebumps, and that’s without drugs before you say anything.

No-ones getting that euphoria from grime music or any modern chart music imo. It’s all shite.

AuntyPasta · 05/10/2020 14:22

I’m almost 10 years older than you but I can’t listen to radio 2. It’s so meh.

Radio 1 has always been about chart music and so what’s popular rather than what’s good. Not liking it is fine. Not liking certain genres is fine.

’most of the time I have no idea what the song is about or I can’t understand what they are singing/rapping about!’

That makes you sound old in the way of parents calling their teenagers music ‘just noise’, which has been going on since the 1960s.

AuntyPasta · 05/10/2020 14:27

And I like Stormzy.

IHaveAGreyLamp · 05/10/2020 14:33

@Seriously79

Were you in their car - or yours?

I'd be fuming if someone got in my car and turned the radio over.

But yes, I do agree with you. Radio 1 is crap.

It was a work car and I was driving. Everyone knows if you’re driving you get control over the radio, it’s one of life’s unwritten rules

You are out of radio 1s demographic.

I switch between radio 1, 2 and 4 or a CD ( old car!) I can't get 6 in my car but I like that too. Sometimes I like classical stuff.

There is still good new music. I have noticed radio 2 is more my era of music than even 2 years ago with Zoe ball/ sara cox ( I'm late 30s)

Radio 2 the bits between the songs is mediocre whereas as least radio 1 can make me laugh. Radio 4 can be enlighting but the plumminess is sometimes too much for me. I guess you cant please everyone!

SallySeven · 05/10/2020 14:36

Radio 1 was only ever good for the chart.

Emmapeeler2 · 05/10/2020 14:37

I switched to R2 (and Radio 4) in my twenties but I also listen to 6Music.

Still waiting to be a R3 listener though.

Yetiyoga · 05/10/2020 14:37

I'm 27. I listen to radio 2 probably the most, I love Jeremy Vine's show.
I float between radio 1 and 2 but definitely more radio 2.
Occasionally heart.
I often have the radio on as background noise.

SallySeven · 05/10/2020 14:38

I was into Radio 4 for a while but I've even given up on that now!

MyMonsteraisDeliciosa · 05/10/2020 14:38

I'm ten years older than you and mostly listen Radio 4 and Radio 1 as I drive an old banger with no DAB or even a CD player. 6 Music at home. Radio 2 is middle of the road, wishy washy trash. It's like the aural equivalent of the Daily Mail

Destinysdaughter · 05/10/2020 14:39

I used to think most modern music was crap until I discovered 6 Music. I was wrong! There is some fabulous music out there, original, thought provoking, upbeat, funky, jazz inspired and I love it. Can't stand the auto tuned over produced crap that passes for much of the pop charts tho.

AdoraBell · 05/10/2020 14:41

I found Radio 1 boring when I still in school.

Your taste in music doesn’t make you old.

Your colleague is BU

Macncheeseballs · 05/10/2020 14:49

Cant bear music snobs, your taste in music is not superior to your colleagues just different

CounsellorTroi · 05/10/2020 14:49

@madcatladyforever

I grew up in the 70's, I don't get anything about music now. It unintelligible.
Me neither. 70s music makes me laugh, cry, want to dance. Music now does nothing for me.
IHaveAGreyLamp · 05/10/2020 14:56

@Macncheeseballs

I never said my taste was superior Confused. I just said I think it’s rubbish as I don’t get it personally. I have no idea what sort of music he likes at all so how can I be superior? He didn’t say he liked it himself, he just called me old because its the ‘current’ style liked by younger people so I must be old if I don’t like it

I find most of BBC radio a bit rubbish but ESPECIALLY Radio 1. Radio 2 is alright on Saturdays with Rylan and Liza Tarbuck but the music is so awful otherwise.
I've given up on all UK radio stations and have discovered Radio Paradise on internet radio. I listen to it on their app played through a bluetooth speaker. They have a mellow mix, main mix, rock and world. No ads and the music is curated rather than digital stations that just stick music on random shuffle.
n.b. I guess I'm old at 45 but I still love to discover new music!
