To think I’m not old just because I think the music on Radio One is garbage?

I had to run an errand with a colleague today. The radio in the car was set to Radio One and I immediately turned it over to Radio Two. I commented that I can’t stand listening to Radio One anymore because I don’t like most of the current music they play, most of the time I have no idea what the song is about or I can’t understand what they are singing/rapping about! For example, anything by Stormzy and that song by Ramz singing about his ‘ting from Barking’. I mean, what does that even mean?!

Colleague then accused me of being ‘old’ because I don’t like ‘modern’ music.

I am 33, he is 21. I enjoy a wide and varied range of music from the 60s through to present day in lots of different genres. Just not most of the rubbish which is played on Radio One nowadays!

AIBU to think I’m not old just because I think that music is garbage?

My kids are 18, 20 and 22 and all hate modern music( with the odd exception)

I'm 29 and I'm not a fan of radio 1. I listen to Greg James on the way to work sometimes, but I think the other presenters are awful. Nick Grimshaw is horrendous. I listen to my own playlists!

I'm mid-40s and I still enjoy Radio 1 and Signal 1.

The thing with pop music is that it goes full circle. You'll hate it sometimes then it goes into another era and you start liking it again.

A popular style nowadays is something called "trap" music. It's basically just R&B music with a 2-step beat. It's something that Destiny's Child would have done 20 years ago but with a heavier baseline.

I'm a little bit older than you and listen to Radio 1 in the morning - I like Greg - and then Radio 2 at work (no choice as its the preferred station)

I sort of know what you mean but I think it's good to have some idea about the current status of music and whats popular. I always bemoaned my parents choice in old music so I've learnt from that Grin
