I don't consider myself 'woke' or a 'lefty' but i think some people are massively missing the point, when it comes to racism in today's society.
I don't think white people should be 'flogging themselves in the streets' as someone commented, but i do think that we should try, as intelligent and hopefully compassionate human beings, to appreciate the fact that Black people have been treated in a disgustingly inhumane way throughout modern history.
Try to imagine your ancestors being kidnapped from their homes, taken across the sea to a foreign country, not knowing the language or culture and being worked literally to death, being treated as a commodity, inspected like cattle and sold in markets like a piece of meat!
Yes this happened a long time ago, but the legacy of this treatment lasts to this day.
Black people, particularly in the United States can still be brutalised and sometimes murdered by the authorities, thrown into prison for minor misdemeanors sometimes for the rest of their lives, made to work for free whilst incarcerated, attacked and murdered if they happen to wander into the wrong neighborhood. It seems the only time this is highlighted or anything is done about it is when people take to the streets.
Then, they have to see statues and monuments of slave traders and owners, being displayed like they are something to be proud of....Oh because they did so much for our town, our hospital, our school etc.
I honestly don't think the majority of white people give this a second thought, because to them 'it is not their history' and they feel this is not their fight, which is fine.
However, when their are others who do give a shit about this and want to see true equality please don't denigrate them by calling them pathetic names. I for one am just glad Black people are only looking for equality and not revenge for their treatment.
