To think we are heading for a full 2 week national half term lockdown

DS’s school ramping up the preparation to teach on MS teams & making sure they can all use it & have the tech in place.

Teachers indicating that it’s going to be half term plus another couple of weeks after.

Given the rising numbers, it’s seems more likely that’s what’s coming - and maybe even a full lockdown this time & not the half arsed one we had before.

Aibu? I am worried as my kids really hated it last time but with so many new cases, it just seems the likely path

I cannot see how schools will be able to stay open, They are already going down like dominoes

Not here. None have closed, there's been one or two cases

m0therofdragons · 04/10/2020 23:02

No schools closed here. About 3 year groups the other side of the county but that’s it.

noideaatallreally · 04/10/2020 23:03

Trust me, I will be more than happy to be proved wrong. I have a lot of friends still in the teaching profession. I want them and the students to stay safe and healthy. But I just don't see how staff absences can be covered. The previous poster who said they had seen no evidence of school year groups being sent home due to covid - I can only assume you are in Pembrokeshire, Powis or Monmouthshire because in the rest of the country there are lots of school cases.

Lets see where we are by the end of this month - hope to be proved wrong.

Janevaljane · 04/10/2020 23:08

well, you are wrong at the moment. Hopefully you'll stay wrong!

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 04/10/2020 23:09

@CrappleUmble

By definition the word "rule" doesn't equate with being illegal or legal, and I never said it did.

Dustballs · 04/10/2020 23:09

My kids hated lockdown learning too.

But now there's hardly any teachers in school - they're all off waiting to be tested, or isolating due to a few cases being found.

There's no learning happening in school anyway. Behaviour's crazy and most lessons are run by supply teachers. So I'd rather they were home - they'd learn more online and also be safer. Just hope it's not for so long this time.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 04/10/2020 23:19

@CrappleUmble

Out of curiosity, did you choose to not follow some of the rules/guidance/whatever you want to call them last time because they weren't technically law, or do you feel that they should have been passed through as actual laws ensure more people complied through fear of being prosecuted? Or something else completely? Just wondering why you feel so passionately about whether it was law or not.

Gobacktothe90s · 04/10/2020 23:23

To all the posters saying they don't see schools going down like dominos as if it's not happening or people exaggerating how bad it is I presume you are in south west?
In Manchester it is a different story and I think there are hardly any schools without a confirmed case. There is also several year groups off isolating at the same school and some schools completely closed.
Just because it's not happening in your area doesn't mean it's not happening elsewhere

ohthegoats · 04/10/2020 23:28

We have to - the 'law' says so. From 22nd October we have to be able to provide remote learning for children 'immediately'. Whatever that means. Also, I guess that going into winter, the chances of bubbles going off as community levels rise, is higher. We're just being prepared.

Teachers indicating that it’s going to be half term plus another couple of weeks after.

Teachers don't know squat more than anyone else. When the last school closures happened, we found out at the same time as everyone else - watching the press conference in our head's office.

Given the rising numbers, it’s seems more likely that’s what’s coming - and maybe even a full lockdown this time & not the half arsed one we had before.

They don't work.

Janevaljane · 04/10/2020 23:29

Yes, I understand that, but schools opening are only really relevant to me if it's my own children's schools.

tapdancingmum · 04/10/2020 23:38

I run a preschool and have the LA phone me every Thursday asking for numbers of children, numbers of staff, any keyworker parents and any vulnerable children. Last week she asked me if I would stay open if there was another lockdown. I had to say no as it wouldn't be viable for us to do so and unfortunately if it was longer than two weeks it could be likely that we wouldn't re-open again.

There is something in the air as the rumours are getting stronger and I'm in a medium risk (according to my app) area of 25 people per 100,000.

We will have to wait and see.

MintyMabel · 04/10/2020 23:47

anyone who thinks the last one was blurry, isn’t going to stick to another lockdown no matter what the rules. They were very simple. Go nowhere except food shopping and one exercise per day. The only exceptions were key workers (who were listed) and those with caring responsibilities.

The only way it can be more strict is if they stop exercise and frankly, that was not responsible for spreading the virus at the time.

The only thing that made people think it was blurry was a minority of people who kept trying to find a loophole in the rules.

Staffy1 · 04/10/2020 23:47

They don't work*

Clearly they do work. Cases were rising before the lockdown in March, and fell after it started. Lockdown does work, but probably not without closing schools as well.

It's so annoying when a poster assumes that everyone understands their abbreveations. Please use the full word or term first and the abbreviation afterwards.

Yes, this. What would be gained from banning exercise other than people thinking the lockdown was harder and therefore better?

I suppose it depends on what the interpretation of “working” is. They work to halt the rate of infections at that time but are a short term solution only
ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 04/10/2020 23:54

@SaltyAndFresh

I really hope you're not right because I will really resent having to spend my week off in lockdown, unable to make up for it at another time, having risked my health working in a large secondary school.
Yeah, some people seem to want that, so we work extra hard for seven weeks implementing and adjusting to the changes in school, and then when we have a week off they want us to be locked up at home, rather than enjoying our free time. There have been between 0 and 2 cases where I live in the last week, so I'll be totally fucked off if they decide we need a national lockdown.
MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 23:58

I’m not even a teacher and I’d be annoyed enough at spending my annual leave in lockdown with no enjoyment of the holiday so goodness knows how those of you who are teachers must feel Flowers

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 04/10/2020 23:58

So what would be the justification for a national lockdown?
Bizawit · 04/10/2020 23:59

@Midlifelights

As in, the last one the rules were unclear, it probably wasn’t strict enough- my friends in Spain couldn’t leave their house at all apart from shopping & medicine - no daily exercise etc. I really don’t want another one but the last one was exceptionally blurry in so many ways
You want a lockdown where we are not allowed out of the house. Even to exercise? Are you mad? What is wrong with people. 😨😨
AutumnleavesturntoGold · 05/10/2020 00:06

On another thread, the poster said in Germany, getting out into the sun was encouraged by Merkel.. Old 🧓 were not accosted when seen sat on benches.

People foaming at the mouth about the odd runner going out twice a day... Getting all worked up spying on their neighbours when actually, the lock down did work.
Of course they work, and they stop working when lock down is lifted.
It's buying time and keeping pressure off the NHS.
A friend who is supply in North West said its utter chaos. Tons of teacher are off.

I really think the people who think it should be so strict that people can't get out to exercise really have lost the plot.

Yep.

I fervently hope that half term won't be extended.
