To think new laws are needed ASAP to protect Mrs Hinch and other influencers

Mrs Hinch has the number 1 best selling book at the moment where she goes into the heartbreaking trolling she received on tattle. They've been critical at everything from her weight, to her parenting and how her husband looks. It's virtually broken her at times and she felt like quiting the internet all together.

Why isn't this illegal today? Why do people think it's acceptable to give harrasment and hate speech because someone makes their money on social media. In no other workplace would this be accepted. Have people forgotten that Caroline Flack took her own life and nothing has changed :(

Anyone who kits out an entire bedroom in their home for their fucking dog (complete with human sized furniture, name plate, linens and lamps) cannot be surprised when people think negatively of them.

MaggieAndHopey · 01/10/2020 21:46

Tattle is... strange. I had a look over there when Jack Monroe wrote about being hassled by online bullies a few months ago. I'm nosy so I googled and found what she was on about. There's hundreds of threads about her, meticulously taking apart literally every single thing she puts online, a whole community based around in-jokes about her - really everything about her - her appearance, her mental health, her friends and family, her relationship with her son, how much money she makes, her taste in interior decor, books and music, her medical and employment history. Oh, and her food, obviously. It's creepy as hell. The 'aim', inasmuch as there is one, seems to be to expose her as some heinous fraud, but actually it's full of people posting screenshots and going 'look at fucking this! she posted that she had cheese on toast just now, but checks spreadsheet she said in January 2015 that she doesn't really like cheese on toast. Lies! ALL LIES!"

I'm not particularly a fan of JM - so I don't follow her on twitter, or buy her books. I don't understand the mentality of devoting so much energy and headspace to someone whose only crime seems to be 'being a bit overdramatic sometimes' or 'posting too many bath selfies'.

MrsShelton · 01/10/2020 21:46

heartbreaking?? yet here YOU are telling people they need their head looking at

you BULLY!

DarkDarkNight · 01/10/2020 21:47

No but there needs to be much stronger enforcement of the regulations for influencers who sell sell sell to a captive audience without proper declarations.

She is not your friend, she is marketing products to you, and she is the main product. I actually find it quite horrifying the way she encourages her followers to obsess over her son.

DeRigueurMortis · 01/10/2020 21:47

How many threads do you expect to post on this subject before you get a different response?

We've had a thread on "protecting mums" aka influencers with children, a thread specifically about SBS...and now this.

You seem to think these people should be beyond legitimate criticism and consistently mis-represent negative feedback as trolling.

The fact is that many of these influencers exercise an astonishingly degree of control over their online presence.

Allegations (at no one in particular) that are very common:

  • not declaring sponsored videos/posts
  • not declaring sponsored links and endorsements
  • removing any negative feedback/criticism of their content/services on social media
  • removing posters from social media groups who post anything that can remotely be perceived as not glowingly positive to create an echo chamber of adoring brainwashed fans
  • posting themselves on sites like Tattle to disparage a "competitor"
  • collaborations with other influencers "because they are sooo amazing" when in fact it's been set up by the marketing agency they share as a specific exercise to
cross pollinate followers and grow both accounts
  • tracking down followers/customers and sending them threatening legal letters alleging liable and demanding they sign gagging orders
  • creating "drama" and deflection when they get caught out re: any of the above about how they've been trolled and trotting out #bekind and in response making mascara drenching teary videos/using statements about meanies/directing ire at sites like MN and Tattle..

And on and on.....

You put yourself in the public eye to make money and the reality is that not all the feedback will be pretty.

It you can't cope with that, especially when you refuse to admit that your levels of transparency over how you earn your money is dubious then don't expect anyone to cry for you...never mind support ridiculous petitions calling for you to live in a protected online bubble of money making love.

ClarencesMum · 01/10/2020 21:48

Her 'book' (I use the term loosely) will be 'number one' in some random obscure amazon category. It's what these charlatans do.

WhereIsTheSaladDoris · 01/10/2020 21:50

Well done OP for directing people over to Tattle 👍🏼

Hinchy did a good job to not actually mention the site throughout her book or during her interviews so I’m sure you’re now her no. 1 fan Wink

MrsShelton · 01/10/2020 21:51

i'm off to investigate Tattle!

ClarencesMum · 01/10/2020 21:51

It takes a special kind of weirdo to seek out a thread on a forum that you know will upset you. It isn't her, it isn't posted directly to her. It is akin to bitching with your mates over a glass of wine.

SantaClaritaDiet · 01/10/2020 21:52

TheFairyCaravan
don't hold back Grin

If people confuse the public version sold to the public with "real life", it's on them frankly. No one is interested in the real version anyway.

It remind me of the complaints against movies or soap because most real life parts are skipped. Of course they are! WHO is going to watch a character being "real" and hoovering for 2 hours Grin. Even Mrs Hinch edits her post, it's too tedious for anyone

ClarencesMum · 01/10/2020 21:52

If any new laws are needed ut should be laws to protect us from people like her.

rumandbiscuits · 01/10/2020 21:53

@TheFairyCaravan

Mrs Hinch is a liar, a fraud and a fake. Just as he found BFF Stacey Solomon is. They both pretend to have perfectly clean houses, ideal lifestyles, feed their kids fancy meals which are all documented on IG but when you look closely most of it is all prerecorded. This makes people, usually women, whose lives aren't like that, who maybe struggling, who've given their kids Cheerios for breakfast instead of a watermelon swan feel like shit. Neither of them care about that.

Tattle tries to hold influencers like that to account and I'm glad they do. The sooner more people see the real side of these influencers and this culture is finished the better imo.

I do agree that seeing these perfect meals and amazing activities they plan for their children is over the top and not good for other Mum's MH. The reality is if you're a Mum you are tired and just trying to keep your head above water and don't have time to make rainbow veg and avocado cakes! I have stopped watching Stacey because of this.
Rockbird · 01/10/2020 21:53

I only vaguely know who Mrs Hinch is so not bothered about her but I took a wrong turn onto Tattle a few months ago and ugh, what a nasty childish bitchfest it was. They're all well suited to each other over there.

canigooutyet · 01/10/2020 21:54

If influencers don't like people being critical then they are in the wrong business.

If Mrs whatever et al have issues with how others are responding, rather than writing books I would think they would be going down the legal route.

Wouldn't be surprised if these influencers had fake accounts to abuse themselves tbh. If it wasn't because of the issues I wouldn't have a clue who they are or that they have merch out there.

Marisishidinginmyattic · 01/10/2020 21:55

I don't understand the mentality of devoting so much energy and headspace to someone whose only crime seems to be 'being a bit overdramatic sometimes' or 'posting too many bath selfies'.

See, this is why I’m glad tattle exists. Because JM also routinely lies, guilts, and manipulates her followers into donating her money. One minute she’s posting about her large bungalow that would cost a fair bit to rent and the bestselling book she’s flogging, and the next she’s claiming she has no money and would people pleeeeease consider tipping her if they like her free recipes because she’s so depressed and worried about money etc etc etc. She’s a rip off merchant.

I think it’s good that somewhere exists where the truth can be told about some of these people.

pollypork · 01/10/2020 21:55

More I think that we need laws to protect the rest of us from "influencers"...

Yep, I work with teen girls & it can be so damaging.

Jumpingkangeroo · 01/10/2020 21:55

I think tattle is great, it’s calling out a lot of fraudsters. Jack Monroe is thankfully being scrutinised as is her patreon. I was so relieved when I read there and realised that it wasn’t just me who had noticed a hell of a lot of inconsistencies. When you are asking for money it’s part of being accountable.

If someone feel shit about their lives because of who they follow on social media maybe it's their responsibility to unfollow. I don't think it's the responsibility of solomon or hinch or whoever is flavour of the month is.
zigaziga · 01/10/2020 21:56

I don’t see why being a number 1 author is relevant other than to prove a point that she is a public figure?

But yes, you are right and laws need to be tightened up. It is outrageous what influencers don’t disclose and the whole industry is pretty depressing.

Crankley · 01/10/2020 22:00

I have no idea who Mrs Hinch is. I don't use any social media (except MN) but it truly boggles my mind that adults 'follow' these so called 'influencers.' It seems infantile to me - wouldn't the 'followers' be better living their own lives than following these nonentities?

Feel free to tell me I'm a boring old fart who doesn't know what I'm talking about but nothing will change my mind.

LaPampa · 01/10/2020 22:04

It’s awful reading negative commentary on your life and I’d love it if we lived in a world where people could discuss issues without being outright nasty, but I’d sooner support laws enforcing the behaviour (& come to that environmental issues) of influencers then shut down freedom of speech. Businesses will always be discussed, critiqued and held to account. When you make your personal life and your child your business, the line becomes blurred. If she were famous for another reason and this was a by-product of that fame perhaps I’d be more sympathetic. Of course I think people should be kind, but we do have laws against harassment and Tattle is I would have thought avoidable reading.

Emerald89 · 01/10/2020 22:05

I’m on Tattle and mainly on the Mrs Hinch and Stacey Solomon threads (two cheeks of the same arse).
Generally speaking Tattle is for trivial gossip, legitimate opinion and criticism, and holding influencers to account. Many of the posters on Mrs Hinch’s threads are ex followers of hers (myself included). If Mrs Hinch doesn’t like what she reads there then she doesn’t have to go on the website.
The moderators on Tattle are extremely on it and give warnings or block posters who break the rules, which include keeping it on Tattle (I.e not contacting influencers directly). Some of the stuff Mrs Hinch is saying, like the story about having a panic attack while wrapping Ronnie’s Xmas presents because Tattlers were calling her fat, are just wholly untrue. The thread is there (#80) - go read it yourself. The main subject of discussion was the fact she labelled her sons presents “From Mummy and Jamie” Grin

pollypork · 01/10/2020 22:05

Also wondered how people have the time to spend bitching about someone they don’t know who they clearly hate.

Agree but also don't understand how people like the OP have the time to start threads defending their idols. These people are not your friends!!!

Wannakisstheteacher · 01/10/2020 22:07

Get a grip.

Someone1987 · 01/10/2020 22:09

It's tricky, because she is putting her whole life out there, her home, husband, her son (I am not sure whether constantly filming him eating and just doing daily life is particularly good for him? I guess, more by the point she must be on her phone constantly too).
So by putting her life out there and being paid goodness knows what (her husband doesn't work due to her income) and sent endless free items, people will have an opinion.
I am sure some people take it too far, but when you put yourself out there, comments are to be expected to some extent.
