To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

740 replies

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

OP posts:
Battlestaricedcoffee · 01/10/2020 20:40

Is she a bit thick? Or generally not ok? Why the fuck would you do this?

Nikhedonia · 01/10/2020 20:42

@NachoNachoMan

Okay I read that first post very wrong - I thought you meant giving her number to people asking her out 😂🤷🏼‍♀️
Exactly what I thought Grin took me a minute to realise that it wasn't!
Boobissue · 01/10/2020 20:42

@tootiredtothinkofanewname read the OP again, OP she hasn't been in places very much but always gives her number when she is.

You think it's not about COVID?

hammeringinmyhead · 01/10/2020 20:42

Of course it's about covid. You think she'd say "I haven't been in places very much" if she didn't mean since lockdown ended and taking details became a thing? Or that they sat outside "but" friend was asked for her number i.e. thought she would only have to give it if going inside?

Mum2jenny · 01/10/2020 20:43

Don’t know anyone who gives a real number, but I don’t go out much so it’ll have zero impact on me!

Local pubs hit the local headlines if there are any cases, so everyone would know if they were at risk. No way would I put real contact numbers on a sheet of paper which anyone could see.

Cloudburstagain · 01/10/2020 20:43

People giving false numbers are likely to be one of the reasons why those businesses may be at risk and close. That is selfish of the customers - who obviously do not care about people dying, losing money being off work ill or having Long COVID.

I refuse to go to cafes/bars/restaurants, as do many friends, purely because people are not following the rules.

Ok so have a false "COVID" name, so if you're contacted you know what it's about, but don't give a false number so you can't be contacted. That's just plain selfish.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 01/10/2020 20:46

@emilyfrost

Anyone giving out a fake number is selfish and inconsiderate, and they’re putting everyone else at risk.

If you’re not willing to give your real details then you shouldn’t be going anywhere that requires them.

^this.

TBH the only places I’ve been since March are the local shop, the hairdresser who already have all my details and work (key worker so worked all through) and I’m not planning on going anywhere BUT I have the app and would give correct contact information if I did go anywhere to warrant it.

lifesalongsong · 01/10/2020 20:48

@tootiredtothinkofanewname

The OP didn't mention covid? And this is in AIBU? I thought the OP meant giving a fake number when being chatted up? Not everything is covid related!

Yes I give a fake number if I'm being pestered to get them to go away. No I wouldn't give a fake number for test and trace.

Although the doesn't mention covid it's pretty clear from the OP that she's not talking about being pestered by random men Grin

for any STUPID & SELFISH PIG IGNORANT -
Not everybody who gets really ill or dies is old & vulnerable
IT COULD BE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT
the pub cafe will dispose of these numbers in 2 weeks they don't want them
I know of a young male healthy in his early thirties who has had long covid since March - he is not alone
Christ some people make me cross

MadameMeursault · 01/10/2020 20:51

@CatSmith

Reading this, some people seriously deserve to carptch Covid and die! So many selfish twats! Just give your number or don’t go out you knob!!!
This with bells on.
thecatsatonthewall · 01/10/2020 20:51

@mumwon The information isn't used by Track and Trace if there is a positive test among any customer, So it it doesn't matter..... calm down.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/10/2020 20:54

Even if we had a really good test and trace system it would appear it would be a waste of space because of all these selfish idiots. Yet other countries seem to be happy to have such a system and have lower numbers. All these idiots refusing to give their right number will just prolong the agony for everyone and also probably result in many pubs and restaurants closing as there will be too much transmission in the community which they can't trace. So well done you!

inappropriateraspberry · 01/10/2020 20:59
@BashfulClam - that’s the point... I’m fine with them not contacting me, I don’t care if someone the other side of the cafe tests + a few days later. I have to work
But you may have it and be spreading it all around your home, workplace and anywhere else you go!
Completely stupid reasoning. Better to be safe than sorry. You may not have a job to go to if we end up in full lockdown again.

GeologyRox · 01/10/2020 20:59

Yes and when some places don't reopen, when we have thousands out of work and no where for people to go and give details to false or otherwise, who will people blame? The government, the industry, the individual businesses, the staff, but you can bet your bottom dollar that none of the people so proudly stating they won't cooperate with the things in place will never see their own part in all this and accept responsibility for that. It'll all be someone else's fault.

Alongcameacat · 01/10/2020 20:59

Don’t know anyone who gives a real number
You need to reassess the company you keep.

beachedwhales · 01/10/2020 21:01

I've been asked to give a mobile number, I only ever give out my landline number as I don't want randoms calling my mobile - nobody except my children and their schools have my number.

UntamedWisteria · 01/10/2020 21:02

And I thought it was the Test and Trace system that was flawed but it's all you selfish twunts who won't do one simple thing to help keep everyone safe.

Just give them your phone number or don't go out.

Not big or clever to give a false number. Just unbelievably selfish.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 01/10/2020 21:02

Why wouldn't you

ilovesooty · 01/10/2020 21:03

@Alongcameacat

I agree. If any of my friends thought this was acceptable behaviour they wouldn't be my friends any longer.
wanderings · 01/10/2020 21:03

YABU to post this outside of the Coronavirus topic.

The government might consider acting with integrity and honesty before they demand the same of the public who pay their wages, and are making massive sacrifices depending on Saint Boris's whim of the week. Is Cummings still in? Will the MP who made the journey having tested positive be dismissed? Will Mr Johnson Senior be fined for not wearing a mask on trains? Likewise Danny Kruger MP?

Mum2jenny · 01/10/2020 21:03

Well some of my colleagues will give the works number but as there are over 1000 employees, they will not be traced. Not sure they even give a correct name tho’

olderwhynotwiser · 01/10/2020 21:04

Of course I give a correct number. It is not just about my own safety or whether I personally have vunerable friends or relatives. The idea of the app is to try to prevent the virus from spreading while still allowing pubs and restaurants ext to stay open. It's a bit cynical to only comply if you fear for your own safety or the safety of your own loved ones. No=one really knows who is safe. Are some people really satisfied to potentially infect vunerable people they don't know because they think they and their own loved ones are safe?

Serena1977 · 01/10/2020 21:07

And this is why I feel safer not going anywhere.
