To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

I'm disgusted with a lot of posters here. If they represent even a small fraction of the population, it's no wonder we have the rates we do and an inability get numbers down. Don't blame the government- just read some posts here and it tells you everything.

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:18

Ffs its heen a week. How many trips do you think we have all had

Bit soon to be charging anyone with murder yet Hmm

You'd rather murder someone (that's what it amounts to) than borrow a bit of money (2 weeks' income.)

Ah that's more like it, we've had selfish thrown around, now we've got murder. These types of threads never fail.

Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 14:21

Is there a sap glove equivalent for a slap?

Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 14:23

@Boobissue

Guys it’s really not worth arguing with a narcissist, they are never going to change, and in fact get off on the negative responses they are getting. Best to disengage and leave them to their wretched little lives.

@Dervel, you're right. I'm off to get on with my day now.

People are selfish, rules don't apply to them and they're not going. To change by us telling them.

I hate to say it but you're right.

I'm gonna go deal with some weeds with extreme prejudice Grin

unmarkedbythat · 02/10/2020 14:30

Oh, for track and trace? I thought this was going to be a "when chatted up by someone you don't want to see" question!

I've only had to give contact details three times since this started because I am extremely boring, and I have given correct details every time. I have to keep going to work, my patients have no choice but to be here, if I caught covid and infected a bunch of then because I hadn't bothered to give contact details and so did not know I should be self isolating, that would make me a truly bad person.

WooMaWang · 02/10/2020 14:31

I assumed this thread was going to be about giving fake numbers to creeps who approach you while out.

But no. It’s about trying to subvert the track and trace system.

I’d really like to return to something resembling normal life at some point. A properly function contact tracing system is a really important part of that actually happening. Please just participate in it. It’s not a conspiracy; it’s an attempt to have life go on in this country.

I’ve been scanning into places on the app.

WooMaWang · 02/10/2020 14:33

Oh, for track and trace? I thought this was going to be a "when chatted up by someone you don't want to see" question!

Snap.

Obviously giving men trying to chat you up a false number to get rid of them without causing a scene is a tried and tested technique. It’s totally reasonable.

@ClarencesMum You've really shown how your mind works by that comment on old people.

I do blame the government who I think have handled the pandemic very badly, but I don't think that's any reason to subvert the track and trace process.

Typical Mumsnet. Bit of hysteria with some unrealism thrown in. I mean, we all have people to borrow two weeks living expenses off and the ability to pay it back now don’t we?

WooMaWang · 02/10/2020 14:50

I blame the government too @ilovesooty. They’re utterly useless and have been throughout the whole thing.

But I would like the track and trace system to actually work, despite the government. We need a system that works effectively.

People aren’t being clever by subverting it. They’re almost certainly just prolonging the period we need restrictions for.

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:51

Especially now they lost their right shift hours cos they have to throw everyone out at 10 now .

Covid has a bed time....

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:58

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:59

Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 15:03

So close pubs end businesses, lose jobs because grown adults are fucking idiots?

The rules are there to ty and save what we can limiting the worst. If people circumvent that wha should we do?

Flogging? Canning? Hous arrest?

TempestHayes · 02/10/2020 15:05

Always.

They log the number but then give your data away to salespeople. If you ever get random calls from salesfolk, it's because you give your number to all and sundry, failing to read the small print about "sharing your data with parties you may be interested in."

I never get cold calls. Because only places like the doctor and dentist have my number, not every random shop, cafe and salon.

You really are scum.

This isnt applicable to trak and trace, dont spread your narcissistic shite

ineedaholidaynow · 02/10/2020 15:09

@TempestHayes they won't be passing on your number to other parties for marketing purposes if they are taking it for T&T. There should be no small print like that. It goes against GDPR

WooMaWang · 02/10/2020 15:13

"I blame the government for having the audacity to treat us like adults"

I blame the government for being ineffective and inconsistent in every single part of the response to this virus.

I blame them for producing unclear guidance they don’t even understand themselves.

I blame the government for undermining their own guidance/rules with crap about ‘common sense’.

I blame the government for all the ministers telling us completely contradictory things, so that people have no idea what they’re supposed to do.

I blame the government for the underfunded and understaffed NHS we all need to ‘protect’ and pretend it’s a charity rather than a public service we all pay for.

I blame the government for not supporting people so that they can actually afford to self isolate when they’re instructed to.

I blame the government for the huge number of people out of work or in increasingly insecure employment because of how this virus has been handled.

Basically, I blame the government for being poor at governing.

The fact that people think they’re being clever in subverting the track and trace system, suggests that there’s much less ‘common sense’ going around than Boris Johnson would like to pretend there is.

I haven’t given false details, but we do now live in a difficult society:

  1. scammers use anything to get money. Scammers have phoned up asking for money for covid tests etc. Identities are stolen. Track and trace info misused (staff member asked pretty girl out having taken her phone number from T&T). People now fiercely protect their personal info.

  2. it’s ok for people like Cummings to break the rules. Not only that, it’s ok for him to say he was testing his eyesight. People think it’s irrelevant but in fact it is a major factor in non compliance. An MP just knowingly took a several hour long train ride knowing she was positive for covid. She will probably lose her job, but it is still massive undermining of the rules.

  3. testing is shambolic and dangerous. A MNer reckons she caught covid from a test centre due to being there for so long. People have received results having actually missed their test.

  4. the media whip everything up into the most dramatic possible frenzy, with misleading headlines and giving more space to juicy stories.

  5. many of us have seen covid used as an excuse for anything. Cancer not diagnosed, work not carried out when promised, whatever

It’s not surprising that ordinary people have resorted to lying like this.

We are a truly broken species and corona is the planet’s warning that it can extinct is.
