To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

740 replies

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

@Whatwouldscullydo

I expect they'll be asking for ID next or ringing your number to check it's correct before they let you in because of people like you

No its planned already. They will keep going til everyone finally says no. Cabt even trust boris to brush his hair and yet look at you all.

Good, I hope they do It's for everyones safety, a little inconvenience won't hurt anyone Small businesses are struggling, they need people to spend money Just give a correct contact number , it's not rocket science

Everyones safety. Except the safety if the staff right ?

The staff already being abused and threatened verbally for asking.

10 o clock at night in a quiet pub on your own with one or two grown men customers and your ringing them to check they have right number

How do you think that will go

ClarencesMum · 02/10/2020 09:44

You hope that you will be asked for ID to buy a coffee?

Heaven help us.

WhoseThatGirl · 02/10/2020 09:45

What’s interesting is the responses from those who don’t want to leave their details are very up beat and seem to be taking pleasure in the horror it invokes in others. I wonder if these people feel hard done by ‘society’ and it’s a way of claiming some power back.
I used to work with someone who did not hide the fact she would make false insurance claims, get benefits she wasn’t entitled to, get refunds for things that weren’t broken and that kind of thing. She seemed to feel the world owed her one, maybe it did she’d had a shit up bringing. She looked down on us ‘mugs’ who followed to rules.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/10/2020 09:46

@Elsewyre

So you've got 16k+ in the bank but will happily endanger people because of 2 weeks work?
A) they remove benefits on a sliding scale if you have over £6k in the bank B) that money is a house deposit, not for spending on living expenses C) even if I could get UC, it wouldn't cover even my very modest outgoings D) because of the sector I'm in (events), I'm STILL not allowed to work properly. It's looking increasingly likely that I won't be allowed to work properly in 2021 either. So, I have no choice to both grab any scrap of work that comes my way, and to eke out my savings

I've been completely, totally and utterly abandoned by central government - they've destroyed my business and failed to help me in any way. If I had been helped by Mr Sunak then I might take more kindly to being asked to self isolate - but I just can't afford to because I've been repeatedly fucked over.

The £500 payment is only available to people who are simultaneously working and claiming benefits. Anyone who is working full time on minimum wage and is childfree is deemed to be earning too much to claim UC - so they cannot get the £500. Waitresses, bar staff and shop workers (amongst many others) are being told to choose between self isolating and paying the bills.

Feelingconfused2020 · 02/10/2020 09:49

Most of the people who won't give their name and number to a pub to protect people's lives probably have Alexa and use Google! Pmsl at the people who think their phone number is so precious they would rather risk the safety of human beings while posting intimate details and photos on social media.

Yes I know it won't be long before @Potterpotterpotter et al come on to say they don't use any of these mediums but I don't believe you.

Coldilox · 02/10/2020 09:50

*How the hell do you know that. Ffs. Most of us complied with absolutely everything. We wear masks we avoid seeing people.

Drawing a line leaving details when there's already srories of them being abused is understandable and not remotely anything like sending in kids with d&v.

There are many reasons people don't want to or don't feel safe in handing over their private number. Akd once again even the POLICE were told to not download the app..so clearly its problematic*

Because they but their own wants above everybody else’s health. They want to eat out but don’t want to have to isolate as a contact. So screw anyone else they might infect unknowingly.

Oh and the thing about police being told not to download the app is bollocks. I’m a police officer. I have the app and was advised by my force to download it once they’d checked it for any security issues. We’re not allowed to have it on work phones, as we’re not meant to run Bluetooth on those. We’re advised to have it on personal devices

GarlicMonkey · 02/10/2020 09:51

Do all of these 'lovely' people so concerned about giving people covid care that their cars are killing asthmatics? I could go on listing similar examples but I'm sure the point is made.

I also think the 'if you can't afford 2 weeks off work don't go out' attitude is disgusting. Should we bring back workhouses too?

I'm on the fence over all of this & risk assess things according to my own circumstances, but the DARVO exercised by covid enthusiasts to make them think that it's other people being selfish for not following guidelines to the letter is really quite astounding. Covid is NOT the be all & end all. A balance needs to be found.

hammeringinmyhead · 02/10/2020 10:01

@DownstairsMixUp

Lol do you know what this thread is full of people who are all about image and LOOKING good. Look at me, I care about everyone else, aren't I good giving a correct number and wearing a mask, give me a gold medal!

I would put good money on the fact you were ALL the same people who shoved 1000s of toilet rolls in your trolleys with no regard for poorer families who could only buy one at a time. I am certain of that. I work for a charity and during that time. We were begging for donations of loo rolls from people's huge stashes they'd been hoarding, did we receive one? Did we buggery. Our post reach hit 1000s in south east. Yet the amount of people screeching about selfish people not wearing masks and giving incorrect information on Facebook, you'd think we'd of been awash with people wanting to help others seeing as they care so much about their social responsibility.

Be honest. It's not that. You just want to look good and it's not about social responsibility is it? You are selfish to because you only care about YOU and YOUR family catching it, you couldn't give a shit if a stranger gets it.

Wtf are you even on about.

Yes, I give the correct number.
No, I did not hoard toilet roll, or pasta, or hand sanitiser.
No, I do not give my correct number nor wear a mask just to "look good". I don't give my real number and then produce a megaphone to announce it. It genuinely did not occur to me that anyone would give a fake one.

You'd lose your "good money" on your "fact".

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/10/2020 10:05

Hmm I have mixed feelings tbh. I have no problem using the app or giving details on indoor places but I'm less happy at outdoor ones. DS plays football on a Sunday and there are five pitches, with three rounds of matches between 10 and 2. If i scan there i could be asked to isolate because someone stood outside next to a pitch ive been nowhere near two hours before I got there. Its bonkers - if someone there tests positive you could have hundreds of people isolating for no reason. Its nonsense like this that makes people reluctant to share details.

ClinkyMonkey · 02/10/2020 10:07

Why don't all the armchair revolutionaries out there just refuse to give their numbers? Why give a false one? Oh, let me see - because your mocha chocca vanilla latte with extra cream is more important than your principles.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/10/2020 10:08

I’d give mine in the situation the OP mentions, but when ordering anything online and they demand a phone number, I nearly always make one up. You’ve got my email address - use that! I don’t want you bloody ringing me, not to mention the possibility of them passing it on.

SmellsLikeFeet · 02/10/2020 10:11

Eh? @Whatwouldscullydo , everyone means everyone
Why do you want to read that as except the safety to staff
Don't try to pick an argument that isn't there

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/10/2020 10:15

Or perhaps I just want to meet up with a friend for a coffee and a chat, because mental health is also important, and loneliness is a great contributor to mental health issues?

I can't be arsed arguing the toss with the barista either

ilovesooty · 02/10/2020 10:19

@Duggeehugs82

If people r not going to follow the rules of a place ie pub cafe then they shouldnt be going to that said place. Like with any other rules that r in place .
You'll be asked what you get out of posting that opinion. Hmm
Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 10:19

The staff are not going to be safe if people start calling for further measures as being this tightly controlled isnt evough already.

toodlepipsqueaks · 02/10/2020 10:21

People giving fake details saying it's about data privacy. Give over 😂 if your morals were so firm you would just stay at home.

Potterpotterpotter · 02/10/2020 10:24

@Wibblypiggly

Actually *@Potterpotterpotter* I’m just speaking as someone whose vulnerable family member has been made very, very ill from Covid and we don’t know where she picked it up. We may still lose her. She’s not old. It’s fucking shit when people happily go round admitting they’d willingly spread something because they’ve decided they’re above the measures being taken to prevent the spread. Like you.

So yeah, it was juvenile but I stand by my prick comment.

Oh well... I still stand by my comment that I don’t give a fuck what you think grin]
JinglingHellsBells · 02/10/2020 10:28

@Potterpotterpotter You are loving this attention, aren't you.

Keyboard warrior at its best.

Hmmm.

Janevaljane · 02/10/2020 10:43

There are plenty of keyboard warriors on this thread, ie all the posters slagging off someone's kids and hoping they get a disease.

You all sound mental.

WhoseThatGirl · 02/10/2020 11:38

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages
You recognise that being kept at home for long periods is damaging to mental health yet your actions prevent people who are vulnerable (a huge section of society) being able to go out.

roarfeckingroarr · 02/10/2020 11:39

I always give a fake number.

roarfeckingroarr · 02/10/2020 11:40

Woah this thread is mental.

I don't give a number because I don't want to risk it being taken. I don't agree on principle with being forced to hand it over or check in. I do however still want to meet with friends and support businesses that will likely soon be further shat on.

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2020 11:47

Why are we feeding Potterpotterpotter's ego by giving them our attention?
You can't argue with arrogant stupidity.

I'm pretty sure that if more people do give false information establishments will start asking for proof of identity before they sevre them.
