To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

Yes it is
Sometimes the guy checks to see if it rings...

Upherefordancing · 02/10/2020 01:03

I haven't RTFT but I'm shocked at this suggestion.

I was quite "relaxed" throughout lockdown, but I would happily give my details now to slow the virus!!

Reviewsplease · 02/10/2020 01:56

People dont get it do they...

The poster who said they would take the 1% chance.... well bully for you.... sod the fact that you or your precious family might pass it on to another family who are far more vulnerable and it kills someone in their family prematurely.

xcess2184 · 02/10/2020 01:56

I'm surprised at how many people are surprised! I wouldn't ever give them my number and generally don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognise.
How are some people so trusting of track and trace with everything that's happened over the last 6 months? I'm genuinely baffled as to where this faith in government comes from!

No real number from me, no self isolation, no testing and definitely no vaccine. If it's covid related I want nothing to do it!

YukoandHiro · 02/10/2020 02:09

I thought this post was going to be about what to do when creepy men asked for your number. Appalled to discover it's people avoiding the trace system. Some people are so bloody selfish.
I hope you gave your friend an earful

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/10/2020 03:59
**@Potterpotterpotter If you “can’t afford” to take two weeks off to self isolate then you have two options:

a) sort out your finances so you have savings
b) don’t go out to pubs/cafes etc.

Perhaps if you didn’t go out so often to pubs and restaurants you’d be able to have savings in case you need to self isolate for two weeks.
My finances were fine before covid hit. Then I had every scrap of work, every contract I'd won, cancelled on me, and despite paying all my taxes, I fell through all the cracks of government support schemes. I've received £0 - I can't even claim Universal Credit because I was saving up for a house deposit, and that put me over the savings cap.

I'm still going to meet up with friends and nurse a pint, because mental health is important too.

But I'll give a false number because I cannot afford to shut down my business for another fortnight with no income (I can't get the £500 payment because I'm not on benefits)

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 04:10

Yes, have given the false number. Use real one but change one number so if they ask you to read again can remember it.

PhilCornwall1 · 02/10/2020 04:46

The ones saying that they are surprised and can't believe people are giving fake details, why are you so surprised at this?

Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 04:48

And people wonder why track and trace is having problems..
Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 04:49

So you've got 16k+ in the bank but will happily endanger people because of 2 weeks work?

squeekums · 02/10/2020 05:08
@ilovesooty I don’t care about the ‘greater good’ or my social responsibility.
I will look out for myself and my family.
Here here
People didn't give a shit about social responsibility or greater good when they saw me as a teen homeless, sleeping in the park.
They didnt care when they saw my father smash me into a bus stop.
Why should I care now?

Signing in luckily isn't a thing for me locally, nowhere seems to do it but I'd give a fake number. I don't answer unknown numbers anyway

PhilCornwall1 · 02/10/2020 05:37
 • I don’t care about the ‘greater good’ or my social responsibility. I will look out for myself and my family.*

Whilst I don't give a fake number when we go out (they know us where we go anyway), I have to say I do agree with the fact that family comes first.

Holding on to my job and keeping a roof over their heads trumps my consideration of anyone else, they aren't important.

emilybrontescorsett · 02/10/2020 06:01

What a weird thread.
To all those saying 'My family comes first,' why do some of you take offense when others feel the same way and challenge you when you don't stick to the rules and guidence?
I have worked throughout lockdown. Quite frankly I'd welcome a lock down at work so I could have time off. We are very strict with who we allow in etc. Yet the number of (bloody thick) customers moaning about why can't I just come in blah blah blah. Or I can't get through on the phone, nobody is getting back to my (bloody mundane and non urgent) message.I
Ffs yes, my family comes first too. Stay at home. Do is all a favour.
And no I wouldn't give out a false number.

BeaverTail · 02/10/2020 06:02

I'm genuinely shocked that people do this, how awful.

Boobissue · 02/10/2020 06:23

@ClarencesMum oh aren't you fucking clever, you just change a couple of digits! You're so bright to do it that way! I mean really thick people would change three digits!

I cannot believe the selfishness of people like you and the frightening thing is your a parent!

BojoKilledMyMojo · 02/10/2020 06:36

I know there'll probably be a good reason for it, but what is the big deal with people being able to see your phone number? What exactly do you think they're going to do with it??

KitNCaboodle · 02/10/2020 06:39

If you can’t afford to miss 2 weeks of work, don’t go to cafes and pubs.

I know of someone who gave a false name as they should have been in quarantine after returning from abroad. Lo and behold, a member of his holiday party got covid - he actually got the call whilst at the pub - but because he’d given false details he didn’t notify the establishment. Angry

BojoKilledMyMojo · 02/10/2020 06:41

And I appreciate it'll be different in other places but here, most places which used a paper form have scrapped it now for a QR code which you scan either via the app or via your phone camera which leads you to an online form.

redcarbluecar · 02/10/2020 06:55

I’ve never given a false number, or thought about doing so really. I want things to get better, so support anything that might help that, even if it’s not the most perfect of systems. However, I never answer unknown numbers and hadn’t really thought about that before. I was assuming I’d get a message of some sort rather than just a ‘cold call’.

ineedaholidaynow · 02/10/2020 06:59

A test and trace system seems to be the way to keep numbers down and get the country moving again. So all the people saying they don’t comply because they can’t afford to have 2 weeks off, you do realise that this will just keep our country failing to control this virus so the economy won’t be able to start recovering (I do realise the Government have to do their bit with respect to tests). So this could also have an impact on your livelihood.

The virus has been around since Jan. They didn't lock down til March. I've been back at work since June. They cancelled buses and trains so those getting to work were crammed onto the very few there were. They opened pubs and strip clubs vefire they opened schools. Even the police joined in the crowds clapping on bridges.

They made all thees political gatherings and protests exempt from distancing rules and gatherings rules , spent millions on an app so problematic even the police were told not to download it onto their work phones. And 9 months later they wanna try and pin the whole thing in us over a few fake names and numbers.

You realise this was the plan all along right? There's no cure no vaccine and no way to avoid crowds or maintain distancing. They can't just tell us to go out and forget about it. The only choice they realky have is to make the restrictions and the conditions ever increasingly questionable and invasive of privacy and remove freedons from law abiding citizens til everyone just says "fuck it" and we end it ourselves.

Clearly for some handing over details just to get a coffee is a step too far. If you have more tolerance and can level up then good fir you. Maybe you will feel differently when your employer bans you from going out. Or maybe you will follow this government down this rabbit hole to the very end who knows .

Are you ok?

Boobissue · 02/10/2020 07:16

Yeah I'm ok @ClarencesMum just amazed at some ropes utter selfishness and the fact that they'll raise their children the same!

Are you not amazed at people just lying? Do you encourage your children to lie like you do? Tell them if they can get out of something just lie?

If you've got such a massive issue with a couple of marketing texts from the barbers, ask them to stop? Just call them up

whirlwindwallaby · 02/10/2020 07:18

@BashfulClam

Give your number ffs. If trace and track calm they will leave a message if you don’t reply. My husband spent weeks working in test and trace and the utter scumbags that provided false numbers just wasted his time!
Sorry, have only just found this thread so haven't seen if this has been answered already. A text message or voicemail, I don't have voicemail or answer numbers I don't know. I look them up if they are not unknown numbers. Anyone who needs to contact me usually has my email address.
whirlwindwallaby · 02/10/2020 07:19

Should have been a question mark! A text message or voicemail?
