AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?

We bought a new dishwasher recently. It was heavily promoted as coming with six months' supply of Fairy dishwasher tablets. The tablets arrived yesterday and there are 120 of them. That's not six months' supply in this household, as we run the dishwasher every day. AIBU to think that wouldn't be half a year's worth in most other households?

I rang the manufacturer to query it and was told that it was six months' worth based on "data and surveys". Hmmmm. I'm not going to take this to the highest court in the land, obviously, but it does seem a bit crap. AIBU?

Ours goes on when it's full. Usually every other day.

LST · 01/10/2020 11:46

@greyishdays we have never even switched our dishwasher on (it came with the house) I find it much easier to hand-wash the amount of pots we use. It takes 5 minutes tops! We also don't have enough plates, dishes etc to have some sitting in the dishwasher waiting for it to be full

SpaceOP · 01/10/2020 11:47

We run ours about 10 times a week. I'm always envious of people who have a routine - you know, turn on at night, empty in the morning and then perhaps again late afternoon. Around here twice a day is too much usually and once a day too little. So, for example, I rant it on Tuesday night, emptied it Wednesday morning. Then ran it before dinner last night and emptied it to do the tidying up post dinner. I've popped b breakfast dishes in there this morning and will run it after lunch again. Tomorrow, we'll probably run it after breakfast and then again after dinner. It means dishwasher management is very ad hoc and can be annoying! [frist world problem alert].

Wahh! Can’t cope with that at all! Grin

@LST you should try it. Just once. Go on.

Shakespearsister · 01/10/2020 11:51

I wish! I run mine at least twice a day!

Me too. And the washing machine and tumble dryer are on pretty much every day. Not that I do the washing.

inappropriateraspberry · 01/10/2020 11:51

@SchrodingersImmigrant Is it a full size or slimline? How many of you are there? I can fit pans, baking trays, chopping boards and all the crockery and cutlery from the day in ours.
The only things I don't put in are wooden chopping boards and the odd fancy glass!

SerenityNowwwww · 01/10/2020 11:52

At least once a day! We have a slim one (small kitchen) and so it’s crockery/pots&pans.

Minimumstandard · 01/10/2020 11:54

Yep. At least once, sometimes twice. Everything goes in there. I've stopped buying any kitchen stuff that needs to be handwashed.

Fink · 01/10/2020 11:54

Once every two-three days. Probably both days of the weekend because there are more meals at home. Pots and pans don't usually go in unless we need to fill a bit of space to put it on. Family of 4. We'll generally reuse the same tea/coffee mug several times in a day and put it in the dishwasher in the evening. Most other things are single use.

120 tablets for 6 months is on once for two thirds of the days, so between 4-5 runs a week. That sounds like a reasonable estimate of average usage to me, although I'm sure they've got some actual data to back it up.

It's full size. We use lots of bowls and plates. I am not putting a pot there to take space of 5 plates 😁

I do usually have some bigger bowls in from marinating etc and I make sure these ho in because I can physically wash them at that temperature, so they have dibs😂

Pan and pot is really not an issue to wash.

TooManyDogsandChildren · 01/10/2020 11:56

once or twice a day depending. I do cook from scratch though. I'm afraid pans go in too as life is too short to give them special treatment :)

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 01/10/2020 11:56

Once a day at least (sometimes more often now we're WFH and sometimes make a proper cooked lunch), and it is definitely full when we run it.

SantaClaritaDiet · 01/10/2020 11:57

I find it much easier to hand-wash the amount of pots we use.

that would drive me crazy, because I would spend my entire day doing the washing-up: after breakfast, random cups of coffee or tea and glasses during the day, lunch, kids afternoon snack, diner.

The beauty of my dishwasher is to plonk any dirty thing during the day, quick wipe of the surfaces and run it at least every evening. For me it's an amazing time saver.

For those who don't understand how full they get: well, sometimes for breakfast we might fancy scramble eggs, or a smoothie. So you already have bowls, pan, cutlery, cups, or fruit shopping board etc.. And that' even before 8am!

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 01/10/2020 11:57

Also - we do cook from scratch every day. We only have takeaways once a fortnight or less, and those are the only days when we might not run it.

SantaClaritaDiet · 01/10/2020 11:58

It's not a dig, I just never understood why some people prefer washing pots by hands and put dishes in the dishwasher - if you must wash them, plates take no time at all, but pots are by definition greasy and much more wasteful to wash by hand.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/10/2020 11:59

I would just like to point out that cooking from scratch doesn't have to mean full dishwasher 😁

SerenityNowwwww · 01/10/2020 12:00

It does around here! Often 3, usually 2 different meals.

notalwaysalondoner · 01/10/2020 12:00

There are only three of use and we definitely run it once a day. With two of us maybe it’s a every 1.5 days on average.

We were sans dishwasher for a while and this is exactly what happened - we were washing up, admittedly small amounts, constantly. And it was tedious. Because I hate to see big piles of dirty dishes etc. And with the dishwasher, that doesn't happen because we (okay, I - DH is quite happy to pile in the sink then do a big load of the dishwasher once or twice a day) load as we go and keep the kitchen overall much tidier as a result.
AldiAisleofCrap · 01/10/2020 12:01

I run mine at least twice a day we are a family of ten .

movingonup20 · 01/10/2020 12:01

120 seems about right for 6 months supply, 4 days a week. Yes people use them more but the average household includes people living alone through to large families. I run mine every other day plus perhaps one extra

notalwaysalondoner · 01/10/2020 12:01

And we put everything in pretty much except for wooden things, expensive wine glasses and non stick pans.

OldEvilOwl · 01/10/2020 12:02

Mine is only a small one but it doesn't go on every day. Maybe every 2-3 days

TheAirbender · 01/10/2020 12:02

I honestly don't get how it can be once or less a day unless you are also washing stuff up and then what is the point of a dishwasher?

Today mine has been on after breakfast (so coffee plus tea pot, board we made toast on, cereal bowls, mugs, plates, cutlery etc), mid morning as I cleaned out a cupboard and ran a few bits through it, when the kids got home with all their lunchboxes, water bottles and my lunch bits and it will go on again after dinner. Sometimes it goes on twice after dinner to get all the pots done (it has a great 29 minute cycle). I never get how people use it less on these threads! One thing I don't get through much of is washing up liquid, I will say...
