AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?

We bought a new dishwasher recently. It was heavily promoted as coming with six months' supply of Fairy dishwasher tablets. The tablets arrived yesterday and there are 120 of them. That's not six months' supply in this household, as we run the dishwasher every day. AIBU to think that wouldn't be half a year's worth in most other households?

I rang the manufacturer to query it and was told that it was six months' worth based on "data and surveys". Hmmmm. I'm not going to take this to the highest court in the land, obviously, but it does seem a bit crap. AIBU?

@DollyDoneMore most of our cooking is done from scratch thank you 🙄

skedaddIe · 01/10/2020 12:58

We don’t wash pots/pans in the dw so only twice a week for us. YABU

notfromstepford · 01/10/2020 12:59

Once a day during the week, quite often twice a day at weekend.

womaninatightspot · 01/10/2020 13:02

I run mines twice a day non school days but I'm lazy and everything goes in the dishwasher including pans. I'd leave a pan for a couple of extra cycles before I'd handwash it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 01/10/2020 13:02

Mine goes on about once a month, if that Blush The tablets would likely outlive me Grin

DianaBrackley · 01/10/2020 13:04

OP, try cutting your tablets in half and double your supply Wink

I read that tip somewhere on MN, tried it and it's true, half a tablet cleans as well as a full one.

maverickallthetime · 01/10/2020 13:05

I think those putting it on infrequently are either not eating or mythical mumsnet chicken eaters Confused.

So we have a household of 4- breakfast alone is 4 mugs, 4 orange juice glasses and 4 water glasses and a variety of plates- dd1 has cereal and toast, dd2 has fruit in a bowl. Then if they are at school and it's an evening meal that's 4 large plates, 4 pudding plates, more mugs and glasses. That's without the prep stuff (boards for chopping, bowls to store stuff in etc). At a weekend it's even worse with lunch stuff.

There are occasions when we eat out that we don't need to put it on but it's rare. I also shove toothbrush cups and soap dishes in regularly too.

Some pans go in as well, it depends but often we can't fit them in!

Sunshineandflipflops · 01/10/2020 13:06

I run mine on average every 2 days (3 of us) but daily at weekends. I think 120 tablets would last me around 6 months but definitely not a year!

Scramblinghealingdreaming · 01/10/2020 13:06

Minimum once, mostly twice

cyclingmad · 01/10/2020 13:07

Twice a week but I live on my own and have enough mugs and plates so I dont need to wash them too often

Sunshineandflipflops · 01/10/2020 13:07

Oh, I handwash chopping boards and pans as they take up too much space in the dw. And wine glasses as they don't fit in the dw!

MayFayre · 01/10/2020 13:08

2-3 times a day here, and always full. Lots of cooking and baking, dog bowls twice a day.

thecatsthecats · 01/10/2020 13:10

Once a week pre lockdown, about once every 4-5 days now.

There's two of us and it's a decent size. We don't use a fresh mug or glass every day, and we have 8 dining plates and 8 bowls, plus about a dozen small plates. The small plates get rinsed off quickly rather than go in the dishwasher for lunch usually.

(we do laundry at about the same frequency)

No wonder people complain about housework if they're doing it that much.

HEYAhhhhhhhhh · 01/10/2020 13:11

I mostly run twice a day. Thats 60 tabs a month. That's ridiculous.

Odile13 · 01/10/2020 13:11

We use it every 2 to 3 days. We are 2 adults and 1 baby.

BertieBotts · 01/10/2020 13:13

If you have two kids and/or people eating at home during the day yes you need to run it daily.

When we were only 3 people and DH ate lunch at work 120 probably would have lasted 6 months.

Not all dishwasher owners have kids at home!

Sorry, what? Do you drink from the tap?

Swiftnicola · 01/10/2020 13:19

OP - I’d go on Twitter and ask them for more on principle. It’s one thing to say 120 tablets, but if it’s 6 months supply then you should expect 6 months supply.

ScatteredMama82 · 01/10/2020 13:21

At least once a day here, twice a day at weekends when we're all at home

TheDuchessofMalfy · 01/10/2020 13:22

Once, occasionally twice

bunnyontheshelf · 01/10/2020 13:23

Twice here. Three times on the weekend.

Ok, so I don’t get it.

Yesterday, for us, 4 x breakfast things (4 x plates, 2 x bowls, 2 x mugs, 3 x glasses, cutlery), 3 x lunch things (3 x plates, 1 x chopping board, 1 small pan, 1 grater, cutlery, 3 x glasses), 4 x dinner things (4 plates, 3 x dessert bowls, 2 saucepans, 1 colander, 1 mixing bowl, 1 chopping board, 1 baking tray, 4 x glasses, prep knives, serving spoons, spatulas, cutlery, 3 x mugs), various mugs through the day, 1 lunchbox, 1 Tupperware box...

More than enough to fill a dishwasher. Do you wash up lots by hand?

IWantThatName · 01/10/2020 13:30

OMG. We use ours 2-3 a day! Blush

thecatsthecats · 01/10/2020 13:32

No, we use the glass or mug we used the day before, briefly rinsed.

And yet we survive. Feel free to recoil in horror, but it's not actually dangerous, or even the dreaded 'manky'.

Waste your own time washing everything you like Grin

(Fun bonus horror - I don't use any form of soap to wash in the shower 9/10. Brisk rub down of a loofah and fresh water rather than wasting resources lathering up. Only use soap when I've been excessively grimy.)

FromTheAllotment · 01/10/2020 13:33

Didn’t RTWT but @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool I’d drop Which? magazine an email suggesting something like this for one of their features. They love that kind of stuff. And if it’s a widespread thing to advertise a supply of something which actually won’t last as long as advertised, then it should be exposed as bad practice!
