to ask you to help me create a situation to wear this dress?!

I am being given a V V V high end designer dress (a four figures job) by a wonderful friend who used to have that kind of lifestyle. She cheerfully waved it goodbye when she got rid of the abusive husband!

She wore it once, no longer fits and she is giving it to me. I would describe it as a day dress but posh, like the sort of thing you would wear to a wedding or the races. Covid aside, weddings are in my past and I have never been to the races. So.....help me in finding a reason to wear it!

Or should I just rock it down Aldi? And wear it inside out so everyone can see the lablel obviously :o

Definitely cruise the aisles in Aldi.

Or why not nip up to fortnum and masons and channel your inner Holly Golightly and swan about town and treat yourself?

Palavah · 01/10/2020 00:25

A lovely long lunch, several courses
Afternoon tea
Tiktok debut

And, yes,
Aldi (wear with trainers and a biker jacket)

sorryforswearing · 01/10/2020 00:26

Difficult at the moment because of covid restrictions but could you arrange a day at the races with a group of friends once it’s allowed? Otherwise maybe go upmarket and wear it to Waitrose.

WorraLiberty · 01/10/2020 00:27

If she's happy to get rid of it and she's a good enough friend (sounds as though she is), I'd probably ask her if she minds me selling it so I could buy a shit tonne of outfits that are more appropriate for my lifestyle.

Derbee · 01/10/2020 00:32

Afternoon tea at a lovely hotel

WetdreamBeliever · 01/10/2020 00:32

Grab your nearest and dearest and go for a family portrait. One of those professional photography thingies where the dog sits in front, you know what I mean.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/10/2020 00:33

Ooh posh dress shopping in Waitrose....I could do that. On a low income so couldnt afford to actually buy anything but, I could do a nice browse!

@WorraLiberty She knows I love beautiful clothes (cant afford any but I love them :o ) and wants me to have it as I would appreciate it. I couldnt sell it.

I think I might just fucking wear it when I feel like it, and to hell with it! however.......if someone says "Oh I love your dress, where did you get it?" how does one say "Oh its Vivienne Westwood" without sounding like a complete arsehole?

This dress cost more than BOTH my wedding dresses combined, I cannot tell you how excited I am to own it!

This might be a really cynical thing to suggest but do you think your friend would mind if you ebayed it (and used the money to buy some classy “practical” wear?) . Labels go well.

Assuming she just wants it

(1) out of sight out of mind so doesn’t care what you do with it - it’s not like she chose it for you to wear.

(2) she wants you to be happy and comfortable, as fun as wearing it “randomly” is if you’re on a low income you’ll be spending lots on dry cleaning

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/10/2020 00:48

In all honesty, if she wanted it sold, she could have sold it. She doesnt need the money and was sending stuff to the charity shop and said she couldnt bear to do that with this dress, so gave it to me. I couldnt sell it, I couldnt even ask her.

She chose me because she knows I would love it, she could have chosen any of her other friends and didnt. I wouldnt do that.

Daft thing is, if the roles were reversed I wouldnt have a problem with her selling it! But my conscience wouldnt let me do it.

Are you able to dress it down at all? A jacket and some boots? Have you got a picture of the dress OP?
Userzzz · 01/10/2020 00:55

Picture is needed!

MrsClatterbuck · 01/10/2020 00:55

Definitely need a picture op

katy1213 · 01/10/2020 00:57

Don't sell it. You'll never get the chance again - enjoy it. Actually, I passed a coupe of women with Vivienne Westwood bags today (assuming they'd been shopping and weren't just touting the carriers!) and they were sitting with coffee outside Patisserie Valerie. Which isn't posh at all!

strappedup · 01/10/2020 00:59

let’s see it! dress it down with a denim jacket & sneakers

olderthanyouthink · 01/10/2020 01:05

School run outfit!
Zoom outfit!
Popping to the GP!

Basically anytime you feel like an extra helping of glamour would dramatically improve your day

Spermysextowel · 01/10/2020 01:09

What dress? Is there a photo that I’ve missed?

HEYAhhhhhhhhh · 01/10/2020 01:15

We need to see the dress. Smile

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/10/2020 02:16

Looking again, maybe I am overselling it, but I love it! I have to admit that my first thought was white sneakers and a denim jacket.

Not the nasty shoes in the pic anyway!

ulanbatorismynextstop · 01/10/2020 02:24

How about you get those portrait pictures done it it, not before you've had your hair n make up done too. The image can stay on your walls for years reminding you what a classy fabulous chick you are. But like others have suggested, sell it and buy some normal clobber

Time40 · 01/10/2020 02:28

It looks as though it will be quite comfortable and easy to wear ... and if that's the case, just wear it as much as you can, until it wears out. There is nothing so tragic as the beautiful but unworn item of clothing that one keeps "for best".

Greeneyes78 · 01/10/2020 03:00

this reminds me of when i was younger and i hoovered the house in a gorgeous pair of stilettos

waitrosetrollydolly · 01/10/2020 03:15

@Greeneyes78 I still do that and I'm mid 50's !
Lovely dress OP. Biker jacket and cool trainers added for daytime wear, anywhere ! Enjoy !
