I’m up watching the first presidential debate from the UK. Who would get your vote?

How embarrassing for the US. A great country with amazing people and you have these two.
If I had a vote it would be for Biden, Trump is going to be growing a little moustache soon I fear.

RaisinGhost · 30/09/2020 13:15

Pp who said Biden is a normal politician with the usual faults, whereas Trump is something else all together, is right.

In 2016 there was a meme about Clinton vs Trump along the lines of "if you needed brain surgery, would you rather have a surgeon with a malpractice suit against them, or a bus driver". It's the same now but replace bus driver with dog turd.

DelilahfromDevon · 30/09/2020 13:40

Biden.
Not RTFT but to those lamenting the state of American politics and I lament right there with them but we in the UK haven’t exactly showered ourselves in glory with our own buffoon of a prime minister and the opposition at the time was no better. (I say this as a Tory voting Remainer)

MintyMabel · 30/09/2020 13:41

he is the only American president since Jimmy Carter who hasn’t invaded anyone

Give it time.

Borris · 30/09/2020 13:44

Biden. Purely because he’s not trump

KenDodd · 30/09/2020 13:44

DelilahfromDevon
Dead right.
The dignity, statesmanship and integrity have gone from politics in both our countries.

Didn't Joe Exotic run for president? Because ffs he would bring more dignity to the office than Trump.

KenDodd · 30/09/2020 13:46

Why wasn't Kamala Harris chosen? Didn't she put her name forward?

MagentaRocks · 30/09/2020 13:49

I still find it hard to fathom that the country that will elected a black president for the first time then elects Trump.

QuestionableMouse · 30/09/2020 13:50

Because america will never allow a female president. They've shown that once already which is how they ended up with Trump.

notimagain · 30/09/2020 13:58

Why wasn't Kamala Harris chosen? Didn't she put her name forward?

She ran for the nomination but withdrew from the campaign.

If you put her name first "on the ticket" ....you then have to think through the willingness of potential donors to give money to that particular cause, also her profile, her track record vs. somebody like Biden... etc..( and there's also the opinion expressed by QuestionableMouse).

I think Biden/Harris is a clever move, but I don't have a vote.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/09/2020 14:06

I read somewhere that Harris wouldn't attract the disillusioned Trump supporters as she is a black woman, but that there is a plan for Biden to get elected and then resign after a year due to ill health so Harris becomes president by default. I have no idea how much truth there is in that but I like the idea. However I think the Democrats could have found a better candidate than Biden.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/09/2020 14:06

Elizabeth Warren! We could have had someone really brilliant like her, and it still pisses me off that we were landed with Biden. OTOH, he's decent and not a crazed psychopath.

Gigglr · 30/09/2020 14:06

Anyone who thinks there's not much difference between Biden and Trump really hasn't been paying attention. Trump is utterly vile and void of any moral compass at all. There's no question. Go Joe go!

billycat321 · 30/09/2020 14:07

They sounded like two old men bickering in an old people's home
If either becomes the leader of the free world then god help us all

IpanemaFlowers · 30/09/2020 14:15

Biden.

CoffeeandCroissant · 30/09/2020 14:21

Elizabeth Warren would have been a much better candidate, but to say that Biden and Trump are as bad as each other is ridiculous.

Hearwego · 30/09/2020 14:25

I saw two old men in their 70s shouting at each other. Point scoring like two ten year olds in a playground.
Biden is the best opponent for Trump?

Reagan was also in his 70s during these presidential debates, atleast he had some dignity about him.
But I do think Biden is out of his depth and a little bit over the hill.

CoffeeandCroissant · 30/09/2020 14:27

@QuestionableMouse

Because america will never allow a female president. They've shown that once already which is how they ended up with Trump.
Hilary Clinton still won the popular vote and she was a flawed and divisive candidate in many ways. I think a female candidate could win if they were sufficiently inspiring. In 2008 many people said America would not elect a president who wasn't white and yet they did.
CoffeeandCroissant · 30/09/2020 14:30

*Popular Vote: Clinton 65,853,516 (48.5%) votes vs. Trump 62,984,825 (46.4%)

notimagain · 30/09/2020 14:30

Elizabeth Warren! We could have had someone really brilliant like her, and it still pisses me off that we were landed with Biden.

Question from a Brit..fundamentally how much of the ultimate choice is down to the ability to attract cash?

Seen from the outside I was surprised Warren didn't do better but was it simply a case of money - Biden could and would attract far more dollars than Warren?

WooMaWang · 30/09/2020 15:07

It’s a terrible choice.

If I were voting I’d choose a creepy old man (Biden) over a dangerously paranoid, creepy, racist old man (trump). But seriously: this is the best that the US can do?

It makes the bloody terrible choice the British public were offered in the last election (johnson or Corbyn for prime minister) look almost appealing.

The electoral college system is bloody stupid. Everyone in the entire country is choosing between the same candidates for a single position that represents them all, so the one most Americans vote for should win. Some votes should not be worth more than others because of weird politics among the different states.

SpaceOP · 30/09/2020 15:07

I think a female candidate could win if they were sufficiently inspiring

How sad that female candidate has to be so much MORE than any male candidate to even be considered as a credible choice.

I'm not buying the Biden will resign in a year theory. At the end of the day, all politicians - including the good ones who genuinely want to help their populations - have egos that are incomprehensible to the rest of us. For you to believe you can run a country, especially one like the US, you have to have more confidence arrogance than pretty much anyone in the world. And that means you're not going to happily resign after a year.

I do think it's possible that if he wins he might step back in her favour for the second term if they've established themselves and her polling shows she was a popular vice president. But that would be more about practicalities - he will be ancient by then.

tornadoalley · 30/09/2020 15:09

I was cringing in embarrassment.

I'd vote for anyone but Trump, but Biden is too old and too weak.

sanityisamyth · 30/09/2020 15:10

Anyone but Trump.

MJMG2015 · 30/09/2020 15:12

Mickey Mouse? I hear things are a bit quiet on the Disney front at the moment. I couldn't vote for either of those idiots.
