I’m up watching the first presidential debate from the UK. Who would get your vote?

YABU Trump
YANBU Biden

I stay out of other people's politics: we have enough of our own.

BashfulClam · 30/09/2020 10:18

Trump is an absolute maniac loonball. I’d rather lick vomit on the street then see him get back in.

BobbingPuffins · 30/09/2020 10:22

10% would vote for Trump? I’m flabbergasted.

CakeRequired · 30/09/2020 10:22

Biden may be no angel, but if the Americans are stupid enough to vote in Trump again, you've lost all sympathy from me. If you can make the same mistake after watching him for the last 4 years, then good luck to you, you're on your own.

Opalwindfury · 30/09/2020 10:27

They’re both essentially the same just one is less orange than the other. But alas the people must choose between the lesser of two evils Trump has openly shown his support for White supremacy time and time again he needs out as we don’t live in the 1920’s anymore.

MsStillwell · 30/09/2020 10:30

I may be wrong but I get the impression that an 'ordinary' person could never be elected, leaving aside the wealth that would be required to run a campaign, simply because the USA seems suspicious of people from poor or ordinary backgrounds. If you're the man in the street you're not hardworking enough. Only the elite will do.

Biden I think I just can't get past why somebody would hesitate over this.
I was going to say the same as a PP, both Clinton and Obama were from disadvantaged backgrounds. Obama's story I'm more familiar with - I can't wait for his memoires out next month.

SlothMama · 30/09/2020 10:30

Biden, but he's hardly much better than Trump. It amazes me that these two are the best the USA can come up with. Their election processes need to changed, it should be less about how much money you have to campaign with and more about what you'd actually bring to the country.

MsStillwell · 30/09/2020 10:31

I stay out of other people's politics: we have enough of our own.

What does that mean in practice?

MsStillwell · 30/09/2020 10:33

I think it should be less about personality and more about policies. Unfortunately, we are going the same way :(

CakeRequired · 30/09/2020 10:38

the USA seems suspicious of people from poor or ordinary backgrounds.

If we are basing this on Trump and Biden, we can also assume that Americans are suspicious of anyone with intelligence. Grin

I feel like I'm watching the Hitler rallies when he has his.

PerveenMistry · 30/09/2020 10:54

@CitizenFame

If I had to vote, then Trump. If I didn’t have to, then neither of them.
OMG, why? Is four years of destruction not enough?!
Rosiesmydog · 30/09/2020 10:54

Biden. No contest. Trump telling the Proud Boys (what a vomiting inducing moniker) to stand back and stand by...what the actual fuck...that’s like BJ saying the same to the National Front.

And all this Antifa nonsense. What is so wrong with declaring yourself anti fascist?? Admittedly, there are troublemakers who take the opportunity to be reactive but the bottom line is fascism is an evil regime and it seems trump and his many supporters are out and out fascists

PerveenMistry · 30/09/2020 10:55

@user1471439310

I live in the US and not voting for either. I agree, we have over 360 million people here and this is best we can do? I feel for my grandchildren.
How can you abdicate the responsibility to vote?

If trump gets another four years, your grandchildren will lead truly hellish lives.

PerveenMistry · 30/09/2020 10:57

@bp300

Both Trump and Biden were absolutely horrendous. The left really needs to get their act together on both sides of the Atlantic. Of all the things they could have picked to attack Trump they pick his taxes from 2016 when the rate of tax was decided by the Obama and Biden administration.
No. Congress controls tax rates, not the president.

And trump cheated on his taxes. That's the point of the investigation. My god, did you read the reports?

Wannakisstheteacher · 30/09/2020 10:59

What blows my mind is that in a massive country like America, they just needed to find 1 single, decent human to run against Trump. Yet the best they could manage is Biden who seems to have almost as many issues of his own! Oh, and also doesn't look like he could survive a full term.

PerveenMistry · 30/09/2020 11:01

@caughtalightsneeze

Except that one will uphold women's reproductive rights and the other won't.

I meant in their personal interaction.

And Biden might uphold reproductive rights but he's planning on trashing women's rights in total which will affect women negatively in every way.

In what way? Please cite your sources for that allegation.

Not voting is letting Trump back in though. Biden, while not ideal, is a more moderate choice and has actually had some good policies in the past.

It's like voting for a seagull to shit on you- in the eye or on the foot. Of course you'd rather have neither, but on balance you're going to vote for the foot. Biden is that.

sapnupuas · 30/09/2020 11:04

I would never, ever vote for Trump.

I know nothing about Biden but surely he can't be any worse...

unmarkedbythat · 30/09/2020 11:06

Why is it always this way? The right could literally enact a cull of the population's firstborn and there would still be a significant chunk of people going "well yes it's bad that they're killing all those people, but the left candidate is imperfect so I just can't vote for him. No, he doesn't want to murder millions of people but he once said something I don't like so I'm just going to sit this one out".

Proudboomer · 30/09/2020 11:08

I would vote for Trump. Not because I am a Trump fan but because he is the only American president since Jimmy Carter who hasn’t invaded anyone and his policy is to bring the troops home. America has been in Afghanistan for over 17 years! Time for them to leave.
He has also taken the first small steps which could lead to peace in the Middle East. Still along way to go but I would like whatever he is working on to be given a chance.
4 years ago everyone was crying you can’t trust Trump not to start a war but he is doing the opposite.

If the democrats had put forward a decent candidate maybe I would think differently but they have learnt nothing in the last 4 years.

BiBabbles · 30/09/2020 11:09

The Democrats are left of the Republicans, but the vast majority of them are not the American left, they're the American centre-right. They are farther right and more authoritarian on some policies than some mainstream Tories. The American left, particularly the non-authoritarian kind, has little if any representation and I feel for their struggle no matter who wins.

I do agree that while the investigation into Trump's taxes has merit, but the Dems need to drop attacking how much he paid as a campaign strategy. They seem to forget not everyone sees the world as they do. There are parts of the country where some nice middle class folks joined the movement of turning in the social security cards as part of wanting to pay less tax (many got arrested and I know people who went to jail for it). What the Dems should focus on is how his tax returns show how terrible he is at business, losing millions in what was then a great economy. How did he lose so much? That is far more interesting to those who could be swayed they should be going for than how much taxes he paid.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/09/2020 11:25

@BashfulClam

Little job for you outside our local Chinese takeaway...

Nanny0gg · 30/09/2020 11:28

I cannot understand, with his track record, how any woman voted for Trump.

And it's interesting to me that over here, no matter your political persuasion, most people I speak to are absolutely anti-Trump. (The exceptions being the ones with #savethechildren all over their social media because they believe he's the only one breaking up (fictitious) paedophile rings all over the world.
