Looking for positive mirena coil experiences ONLY

I've already had a thread where a lot of women have told me about their experiences with the mirena coil. I've had mine in for a little under 2 weeks now and am still bleeding. Starting to think this was a bad idea as I'm in a new relationship, we haven't had sex yet, and a lot of women said their bleeding didn't stop for up to 6 months. Now I'm aware of this, has anyone here had a good experience? Just a short time bleeding? Lighter periods? Etc.

Unfortunately I did bleed/spot on and off (but mostly on) for 6 moths BUT since then I still have a cycle but my heaviest day is only spotting. Previously I was filling a large menstruated cup and a pad roughly every 2 hours - so all worth it in my opinion and a positive outcome Grin

mouldygrapes · 29/09/2020 15:18

Loved it. I’ve had 3 Mirenas back to back.
Minimal bleeding after insertion, pain settled within 72hrs. No periods at all for 13yrs.
Very occasional light spotting if I was stressed.

I’m currently pregnant but would deffo have one again

aaalll · 29/09/2020 15:20

Sorry OP, I spotted very regularly for 18 months and still had a period - I do think however that's very rare. I also developed cystic acne so mine got taken out a few weeks ago.

The majority of women will find it settles and then they have a very light or no period at all.

Had I not had the spotting, the changes to my period would have made it worthwhile

TeddyIsaHe · 29/09/2020 15:20

Me! I spotted for about 6 weeks. It stopped and then I had my first period - I barely even had to use a tampon it was that light. Game changer!

Stick with it, it will settle down and you’ll probably grow to love it.

Bellebelle · 29/09/2020 15:20

Hi, I’m on my third mirena and it’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience. The first time I had bleeding on and off for a month but for subsequent ones it was only a few days.

I had regular periods for about the first year but they were lighter than usual and gradually got lighter every month. Now I hardly ever have a period. The occasional very light bleed.

Of the woman I know who have a mirena the majority love it. There are a couple of people I know who have really not got on well with it and they do tend to talk about it as if it’s the worst thing ever for everyone because it was bad for them!

OddBoots · 29/09/2020 15:21

I don't know if this counts as positive for you but it is for me - it took about 6 weeks for the bleeding to stop for me, I am now 2 1/2 years on and once or twice a year I get a couple of days bleeding with light cramps - this is an amazing improvement on my life before the coil.

GrolliffetheDragon · 29/09/2020 15:22

It's been fine for me. Crampy for about five days afterwards, spotting for a week to ten days after insertion. It's just coming up to two years and my periods are really light, I just use fabric pantyliners and barely need them really. No other side effects.

Would definitely have another one, it's been great for me.

ScribblyGum · 29/09/2020 15:22

No bleeding. No periods. No bad side effects at all.
Just no babies and never having to buy tampons or ibuprofen every month.
I’m on Mirena no 4 now and still in love with it as much as I was no 1.
Bloody MARVELLOUS things they are.

DelurkingAJ · 29/09/2020 15:23

Big fan. Periods essentially stopped after a month or so of spotting. No other issues to note and a lot easier to remember than taking the pill every day (as I had pre pregnancy for more than a decade).

ScribblyGum · 29/09/2020 15:24

No 3 Mirena was my favourite as I was in a study and periodically I’d get sent £20 of amazon vouchers for telling the Mirena people I still wasn’t pregnant.
Never going to be paid for not having periods again which is a crying shame.

stopchewingeverything · 29/09/2020 15:25

I've had 2... bled for 6 weeks when the first one went in and then nothing for 7 years when it came out to TTC. I will definitely have another one all babies are out!

DaisyandRoses · 29/09/2020 15:30

I love my mirena it’s the only successful contraception I’ve ever had. Pill gave me depression for years and I didn’t even realise.

I’ll be having mine out soon to TTC but I’ll be having it back in after even if DH has a vasectomy.

I did get some cramping and bleeding at first but your periods get lighter and lighter until you don’t have them. I’m dreading getting periods back I honestly don’t know how I’ll cope!

HariboLectar · 29/09/2020 15:30

Mine was a really positive experience, I had one short bleed a few weeks after it was put in then nothing until it was taken out after 5 years.

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 15:36

I'm nervous about being in a new relationship and potentially bleeding for up to 6 months Confused

How heavy is your spotting? I had sex with dp whilst spotting and he didn’t notice.

Fyzz · 29/09/2020 15:49

Changed my life.
In my early 40s I was bleeding so heavily I hardly dare go out.
I ended up having 3 consecutively until I was through menopause. My GP said they have saved many thousands of women from hysterectomy.
I found them excruciatingly painful to be fitted, a few days of spotting and after that I had a regular show but that was it. Lasted a few hours.

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 15:50

@teddyisahe need to change my Mooncup around every 6 hours. I'd say it's actually just a bit heavier than spotting, but it's only early days.

I had mine in for 7yrs and after the first few weeks no bleeding, spotting or side effects in all that time....and no pregnancies either

Oneandabean · 29/09/2020 16:00

I had mine about 6 years, took it out to have baby. When I initially had it in I did bleed irregularly for around 6 months, and then occasionally during the rest of having it in, but I did have a LLETZ treatment while it was in and I think the scar tissue may have been the cause of a lot of the bleeding.

Otherwise I had no periods, they stopped completely which was brilliant. Once I’ve had this baby I will definitely be having another put in.

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 16:01

@oneandabean that's interesting. I've also had a lletz

trunumber · 29/09/2020 16:03

Love mine. Heavy and random periods for about 3 months but I haven't had a period in nearly 3 years now. No problems, no pain and no PMT (which was very very severe for me)

Love it, wished I had done it years ago

trunumber · 29/09/2020 16:04

My best friend was newly married (and loves sex) when she had hers, she bled for 6 weeks but then nothing. There are other things than PIV sex (and then years of never having to worry if it's time of the month!)

snappycamper · 29/09/2020 16:08

Mine took about 3 months to settle, I had a niggling back ache until then, and periods lightened gradually, eventually stopping altogether.

I am evangelical about mirena, it changed my life.

At 2 months I was worried it had been the wrong decision, my advice would be to stick it out a bit longer OP

Oneandabean · 29/09/2020 16:08

@lasangoles I don’t think the bleeding was due to the coil completely as they investigated it, was in and out having all sorts of scans and examinations. They told me it was all sorts and then eventually they said it was the scar tissue, it was very sensitive and would bleed if knocked even slightly. Seems to be a lot better now though, no bleeding for a few years.
Generally I think it depends on your own body, they can take 6 months to settle down properly, but they’re often before that.

ArchieStar · 29/09/2020 16:10

I have had minimal problems with the mirena and I have bad gynaecology issues! Completely changed my life!
