Looking for positive mirena coil experiences ONLY

I've already had a thread where a lot of women have told me about their experiences with the mirena coil. I've had mine in for a little under 2 weeks now and am still bleeding. Starting to think this was a bad idea as I'm in a new relationship, we haven't had sex yet, and a lot of women said their bleeding didn't stop for up to 6 months. Now I'm aware of this, has anyone here had a good experience? Just a short time bleeding? Lighter periods? Etc.

I had cystic acne and spotting/heavy discharge for about 4 months. The acne nearly made me take it out but I stuck with it and am so glad I did! My skin cleared, super light periods (pantyliner light) and no risk of pregnancy. Love it

MrsBungle · 29/09/2020 16:12

I think (if I remember correctly) that mine took around a month to settle. Since then it has been amazing. Most months I have no period at all and other months I have very minimal spotting for 1 day. No side effects at all, I am so glad I moved to mirena.

Roomba · 29/09/2020 16:15

I've had two Mirenas in a row now. Best decision ever! With the first, I did bleed on and off for a couple of months, and like OP, I wondered what the hell I'd done and started regretting it. Once that ended, I've had very light periods which are a vast improvement on before.

I've tried many combined and progestogen only pills and only found one that 'agreed' with me. The same progestogen that is in that pill is used in the Mirena, I suspect that's why I've got on so well with it? My acne cleared up, I lost weight, my moods are better and my periods are light and pain free. Fantastic!

Mine went in 4 months after birth - child has turned 4!!!
I love it...
Occasional blood spotting which is easily sorted with a light pad
Hardly noticeable pmt tension/irritability
No worries about getting pregnant
1 small issue - husband could feel the threads was sorted easily and quickly in first few months
Was a bit hyper aware when it first went in - worried about every spot of blood, twinge, etc.
Now I simply don't even think of it - till I saw the title of your thread and realised how I don't think about it at all anymore

I bled most days for 6 months and was on the verge of getting it taken out. Then it suddenly settled and I haven't had a period for 8 years. For someone who was borderline anaemic due to heavy clots and bleeding and whose life was ruled by staying within easy reach of a toilet for one week in every four, this has been like a miracle. Not having periods has been life-changing!

charlie10k · 29/09/2020 16:15

Gave up on my first one due to spotting continuously after 6 months.

Was convinced by fp clinic to try again. When they fitted my second Mirena they prescribed mini pill for a month. This apparently helps to kick start things and prevent spotting. Absolutely worked. Am now nearing the end of shelf life of my 3rd Mirena.

No spotting or periods for 10 years. No problems whatsoever.

However if I had gone by my initial experience, the story would be very different!

Hth.

ODFOx · 29/09/2020 16:20

I was very impressed. I had 3 in a row. No significant problems at all.

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 16:22

I can deal with a couple of months, and the guy I'm seeing said he would happily wait 6 (I mean, he'd have to!) but it would suck if it went on for that long. Keeping my fingers crossed. If I wasn't seeing anyone I don't think I'd give the bleeding a second thought. Was meant to have it fitted months ago but covid scuppered my plans!

I'm on my second, no problems at all, I get a light period maybe every 3 months, getting it removed soon TTC, and I'll get another put back in after if we manage it!!

greythrow · 29/09/2020 17:20

I had spotting for maybe a month or so, and then a bit of breakthrough spotting once a month for a further five months. Then not had anything since - kept the mirena in for five years and just had it replaced a few months ago. Love mine.

CheeseAndOnionIcecream · 29/09/2020 17:40

I had my first Mirena 20 years ago (I was 35). It was primarily to treat my heavy, painful periods. It certainly did the trick. Although I did have light bleeding on and off for the first few weeks,it WAS very light and not at all painful. After a few weeks,it stopped, and after that I had light sporting every few weeks, nothing like the periods I'd been used to. I had it replaced with a new one after 6 years and it was much the same, apart from slightly heavier bleeding for a few days after it was first fitted. When I had my last one fitted, (aged 48,8 years ago) I had heavy bleeding for 2 days, then nothing at all,not even spotting for the next 7 years, when I had it removed, aged 55.

I can honestly say that it transformed my life, and I'm always a bit surprised when I read 'horror stories' about women who have had nothing but trouble with it.

I've also wondered whether it helped with the menopause. I'm 56 now,and had no symptoms whatsoever! No hot flushes, foggy brain etc. I don't know whether I was just lucky.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 29/09/2020 18:01

I was spotting on and off for 6 months but after that I’ve had no more periods. I’ve just had mine changed and other than a bit of cramping for a couple of days I’ve been fine. No renewed bleeding.

Interestingly I was advised no tampons or mooncup due to the suction and the risk that the coil could be dislodged. Could that be causing a problem?

comingintomyown · 29/09/2020 18:03

I’ve been using it for 20 odd years , really fantastic no negatives whatsoever- persevere !

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 18:25

No mention of not being able to use a Mooncup or tampons. If you can't use tampons couldn't it also become dislodged during sex?

As with all contraceptives, the horror anecdotes and stories you will see and read online far outweigh the positives. That's just because people tend to keep quiet when they're happy with something or it's working as it's supposed to, and shout when it's not.

If we were the opposite, there would need to be a whole forum solely dedicated to women just popping in every month to let you know their contraception worked, they're not pregnant this month and have had no side effects.

I love my mirena and had very light spotting for about 8 weeks. Nothing since, 5 years in and still loving it

Misskittyfantastico85 · 29/09/2020 18:34

Oh and I used a moon cup in the 8 weeks of spotting. No issues at all

zafferana · 29/09/2020 18:39

I've had a Mirena for 4 years and I love it - I'll definitely be getting another when it is up for replacement next summer.

I'd give it a bit of time OP. I had several months of adjustment in the early days and many new contraceptives cause breakthrough bleeding in the early weeks/months. I can understand how frustrating that is in the early stages of a relationship, but I was advised to give it 3-6 months after I'd had it put in to see how things settled down and so I did and it's been great.

Nandocushion · 29/09/2020 18:40

I'm on my 4th and last one (50). Spotting for up to two months with #1, maybe 3 weeks with #2, a day or so with the last two. No periods, no cramps, no moods, no bloating, ever. I LOVE Mirena.

Mimimayhem18 · 29/09/2020 18:40

I'm 1 week ahead of you but with a Kyleena instead of Mirena (it's smaller in size) my spotting has just started to settle down. I did ask about bleeding when I had it fitted and my doctor basically said everyone is different but if your period was on the lighter side before it was fitted it should settle down quite quickly.

Nandocushion · 29/09/2020 18:40

Yes of course you can use tampons and a mooncup!

Powerlessstepmum · 29/09/2020 19:16

I had my first Mirena about 17 years ago so struggling to remember how long it took to settle, but not that long. I loved it, the barely there periods and not having to remember to take the pill. Had a second one when the first ran out but DH had the snip so don't have one any more.

Chattercino · 29/09/2020 19:21

Mine took a couple of months to settle, but haven't really had a period since, and no trouble whatsoever. I've had it for 3 years

Mrsemcgregor · 29/09/2020 19:41

I’ve gone from flooding heavily every month to barely any bleeding. I have predictable spotting every 25 days. I love my mirena.

Cismyfatarsey · 29/09/2020 20:09

4 back to back and love it. I have my last ever in now. Very happy indeed with no periods and no need for contraception.

Muststopfaffing · 29/09/2020 20:22

I’m a GP with additional training to fit Mirenas and am also on my 3rd one. I think they’re brilliant. Unfortunately irregular bleeding or spotting is an expected side effect. It works (largely) by making the lining of your womb (the endometrium) thin so this is being shed which causes the bleeding. In theory, this can go on for up to 6 months, but it’s not usually constant bleeding and in my experience it’s not usually that long. Problematic bleeding can be managed (depending on any other medical problems) by adding in either the combined or progesterone only contraceptive pill for a few months. I’d normally suggest persevering for another couple of weeks before doing that though.
