Soda stream

AIBU to want (need?) a soda stream? I drink fizzy water "as a treat" but the number of plastic bottles in my recycling bin is dreadful for the green credentials of our household. We are managing to move away from a lot of other plastic packaging, so would this help too?

How else could I drink shiny fizzy water without feeling bad for the planet?

Agree, it’s not about the money for me. We were getting through several 2l bottles of the cheap carbonated water each week, and although we recycled the bottles it did feel wasteful. I was delighted to get my soda stream as a birthday present even though we all use it.

reluctantbrit · 29/09/2020 13:32

We bought an Aarke, similar thing but different brand.

We drink lots of sparkling water, normally mixed with apple juice, and I was fed up with the amount of plastic. We have it now since 18 months and never looked back.

We recently did a cost comparison (not the thing itself but the gas container) and found that we do save a bit of money, not a lot but as the impact of no plastic adds on we are fine.

Only drawback - no plastic bottles in the house when DD's Scout group asked for them in the last minute for an experiment.

Tinkletwat · 29/09/2020 13:34

If I'm not mistaken Sainsbury's are going to start selling the canisters as well as Argos and Lakeland. I mostly drink sparking water but some of the Lakeland syrups are nice, especially the ginger beer one.

HOkieCOkie · 29/09/2020 13:34

I’ve been thinking of getting one, but I’d want the syrups for like “Coke” are they not good then?

Clymene · 29/09/2020 13:36

It's about plastic waste, cost and also never running out of fizzy water!

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 13:41

@MahMahMahMahCorona I have a referral code for 10% off if that’s of interest?

DarceyDashwood · 29/09/2020 13:49

I got one for my birthday last year as drink fizzy water and I love it!! I did wonder if it would be another kitchen gadget I use loads initially and then it just gathers dust (hello waffle maker and nutribullet) but no! I use it almost every day!

I tried the coke-light one. I think it tasted pretty much as coke-light does. However, they come in plastic bottles and you have to use quite a lot. not sure how that works out price-wise, but i think that people who don't like it may not use the right quantity?

If we want pop, we buy a crate of pop in glass bottles (0.33ml bottles) but we live in Germany and so buy the Fritz ones which are made in Hamburg.

Yes please @ShaunaTheSheep!

Have sent a message.

Meggymoo777 · 29/09/2020 14:36

Get the soda stream!!! I was like you with endless plastic bottles and the soda stream has literally eliminated all of that awful waste. I use it every single day and don't ever want to be without one again! Treat Yo Self!!!

Whatup · 29/09/2020 14:49

Get the syrups from Amazon don't use the soda stream ones

hashtagsquirrellegs · 29/09/2020 14:56

I've got the crystal and 3 glass bottles. A treat to myself a year ago. Love it! It sits on my bench and is used daily. If the kids want a fizzy drink they just use normal cordial and the fizzy water.

bubblesforlife · 29/09/2020 15:55

I got one last week. Love it. No regrets!
I got mine in Ryman

RobertaTheGreat · 29/09/2020 16:43

I have one on my Christmas wish list for if anyone asks me what I'd like, but this thread has given me the push to buy it myself. Just bought the Spirit Hydration pack on offer for £99.99 (£30 off!). I feel awful guilt over the plastic water bottles in our recycling, so thanks for giving me a push!

Brogues · 29/09/2020 16:49

We have a tap that does fizzy water. I use Lime cordial or non alcoholic gins or do a 50:50 mix of smoothie and fizzy water for an alternative cocktail.

AlternativePerspective · 29/09/2020 16:58

I don’t think it’s always about the cost TBH. I have milk delivered in glass bottles and that is considerably more expensive than the milk in plastic ones.

I think that if you’re drinking multiple bottles of fizzy water a week then it is definitely worth buying.

I drink orange squash but when I tried that with fizzy instead of tap water it was horrible so the only thing I would be buying one for would be the home made lemonade I make.

Tunnocksmallow · 29/09/2020 17:14

I’m currently awaiting delivery of my Genesis soda stream machine from the official website. Half price at the moment. I drink lots of fizzy water, so I’m hoping it will pay for itself soon.

MadameMinimes · 29/09/2020 17:25

I have one. The syrups are ok but not terribly exciting. I like just fizzy water with a dash of bitters or similar but if you’re looking fo a more fizzy pop flavour, I think Mr Fitzpatrick’s cordials are great. The blood tonic and root beer ones both work perfectly. Vimto squash and Tesco lemon squash also work well. I agree with the PP who said that orange squash isn’t nice though.

Flatpackback · 29/09/2020 17:30

Thanks for your post OP, I was just looking at getting one yesterday. We had one about 25 yrs ago but getting cartridges was a pain, however, I see they now do a scheme, much better. I'm off to place my order.

Onefishtw · 29/09/2020 17:30

I use mine (most basic one) every single day. I get the canister refilled at The Range for £10 a go and bought a new fancy bottle to take out and about with me. It’s fab and does away with all those single use plastics.

Glittertwins · 29/09/2020 17:41

We've had one a while and tend to use it for fizzy water and add cordial / fruit syrups.
Need to restock the ginger beer syrup but can't find it anywhere

heyholetsgogogo · 29/09/2020 17:46

Was considering a soda stream - saw this thread this morning - then went to Sainsbury’s and the "jet" was reduced to £45 from £75. It's also got £10 cash back but that's towards a new gas bottle.

The water I made was proper fizzy
Win win

Sophiafour · 29/09/2020 17:53

We bought one about 9 months ago and have never regretted it, it's just the basic Spirit model. (We did have to buy extra bottles though after yours truly left one of them too near the oven and the other half managed to leave one at one of the locations they were working - they work for an agency.) We use it at least once a day, often more.

I used to dread recycling day even more than I do now as it was just boxes and boxes of plastic fizzy drink bottles, the Sodastream has definitely helped with that. Plus we live in a hideously hard water area and fizzing the tap water makes it almost bearable. (I grew up in a soft water area. The water here is vile.) And yes, over the 9 months, it has definitely helped with both cutting down on plastic and also the cost of sugar and water in a labelled bottle...

The only thing I have noticed recently is that it's getting very difficult to get full sugar syrups, though as other posters have said, you can use ordinary ones and they'll work fine. I'm also looking into making our own now though it's a bit unfortunate that the other half's favourite drink is Cola...

We've changed canisters at both Argos and the Range with no problems at all (well, until the town Argos closed down, along with the Marks and Spencers and just about everything else...), and bought replacements from both of those places and Lakeland, but we're now looking at Sodastream's own scheme.

ToastyCrumpet · 29/09/2020 17:54

I love mine and use it all the time. If you’re just fizzing water you need to filter it first, else you can really taste the chlorine.
