Soda stream

MahMahMahMahCorona · 29/09/2020 09:49

AIBU to want (need?) a soda stream? I drink fizzy water "as a treat" but the number of plastic bottles in my recycling bin is dreadful for the green credentials of our household. We are managing to move away from a lot of other plastic packaging, so would this help too?

How else could I drink shiny fizzy water without feeling bad for the planet?

You can exchange the gas cylinders at Sainsbury now, and also at Robert Dyas, if you have one of those near you.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 29/09/2020 19:12

@Brogues - a fizzy tap? Wow.

I'm very pleased that so many of you love fizzy water as much as me. I thought it was just me...

@MahMahMahMahCorona it is one of those hot taps but with an extra box that takes up most of the cupboard underneath the sink. I feel like I’m in a pub when I use it lol.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 29/09/2020 19:33

@Brogues do you ever just randomly shout "get outta my pub!" as you pour yourself a hot fizzy pint?

we bought the one in our house as a present for my DD - pleased she's forgotten it her's now she's away at uni....

hated all the flavours

Puffalicious · 29/09/2020 20:30

Amazon cordial are worth a shout then. Thanks PP.

Kittywampus · 29/09/2020 20:42

I really want one because I go through about 10 litres of soda water a week. We get the cheapest 2 litre bottles from aldi and dp is against it because (according to his calculations) it would work out more expensive than buying the water.

I'm also put off by the poster who said that the water needs to be filtered first. I don't have a filter so that would be another expense / gadget to store.

MadameMinimes · 29/09/2020 20:48

I don’t filter the water and have never had a problem. Your DH’s calculations are probably right though, it won’t be cheaper than buying cheap soda water. I bought mine with the intention of saving plastic more than saving money.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 29/09/2020 20:54

You’ll try making everything fizzy when you get one. Me and DP did. Word of warning, don’t try and make milk fizzy, it is fucking disgusting

BIWI · 29/09/2020 21:08

Why filter the water?! You don't need to do that.

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 22:10

Depends on your water - ours is perfectly fine tasting so don’t filter it. Just keep the filled bottles in the fridge and fizzy up when wanting a glass or two.

spookmeout · 29/09/2020 22:19

Our tap water isn't nice. The filter jug removed the taste of chlorine.
Not everywhere is the same

Cantbreathe2020 · 30/09/2020 10:16

@Rainallnight

I’m going to be the lone voice that says I’m not that keen on mine. It takes up a lot of room and the end result doesn’t seem nearly as fizzy as proper fizzy water.
I agree. Even more so as the canister passes the half full point. By three quarters, you're having to press the button 12 times to get anything remotely fizzy!

I've been tempted to try the electric one to see if there's any improvement

Cantbreathe2020 · 30/09/2020 10:18
@MahMahMahMahCorona I have a referral code for 10% off if that’s of interest?
May I please use your code also? Or is it just for one use? Thanks

HotPatootiebootie · 30/09/2020 10:39

I bought one last year and sud's stream were redoing ash the steps and you couldn't get any at all. I why onto what and bought a post mix box of branded Diet Pepsi and a lemonade. I then decanted it into bottles and kept one of each in the kitchen and fitted a pump top. So my kids fizz the water, give two squirts into the glass and give it a mix and it's the same as from a branded bottle or Maccy's. I shared the rest of the syrup with my family and still have 4 litres stored in the pantry. .

AriettyHomily · 30/09/2020 10:49

Blimey I make five or six 800ml bottles a day. The gas lasts for four weeks and I give each one six blasts.

I paid £120 for the annual plan which is 12 bottles a year.

HotPatootiebootie · 30/09/2020 10:58

No idea why my phone went bonkers with the first two sentences of my last post 😱

So has everybody found the sparkle plan to be the cheapest option for remaining the gas?

BIWI · 30/09/2020 11:18

Ah yes, sorry - didn't think of that!
DrCoconut · 30/09/2020 11:29

The flavourings are rank but fizzy water is quite pleasant

terriblyangryattimes · 30/09/2020 11:35

We have one too and it gets used loads here! When we run out of gas and forget to order a replacement I'm always surprised at how fast the recycling bin fills up- husband is a nightmare with fizzy drinks!

ShaunaTheSheep · 30/09/2020 16:56

@Cantbreathe2020 have sent a message.

Cantbreathe2020 · 01/10/2020 01:18

@Glittertwins

We've had one a while and tend to use it for fizzy water and add cordial / fruit syrups. Need to restock the ginger beer syrup but can't find it anywhere
Lakeland have it :)
shimmyshimmycocoapop · 10/10/2020 12:39

Sodastream Genesis is a special buy in Aldi next week for £54

InconvenientPeg · 10/10/2020 13:00

I love mine, bought for the plastic saving reason and so I could shop more locally and not have to carry bottles of water home. We just use cordial when we bother to flavour it, but I have thought about buying post mix syrup (pump bottles are genius @hotpatootiebootie, so might have another look at that).

I normally do three longish gas squirts and it's fizzier than most supermarket fizzy water.

Everyone laughed when I bought mine (how retro!), but it gets used tons!
