Soda stream

MahMahMahMahCorona · 29/09/2020 09:49

AIBU to want (need?) a soda stream? I drink fizzy water "as a treat" but the number of plastic bottles in my recycling bin is dreadful for the green credentials of our household. We are managing to move away from a lot of other plastic packaging, so would this help too?

How else could I drink shiny fizzy water without feeling bad for the planet?

None of the syrups any good at all? It would stop all the buying of Coke Zero/ Fanta by teen DC.

I love the idea of Elderflower cordial/ good apple cordial for me, they'd like that but also need the option cola/ orange flavours.

bridgetreilly · 29/09/2020 12:00

I have the same one as @Florencex but in pink. The canisters last several months. I don't use any syrups because part of the reason for getting it is that I'm off sugar (and cannot bear artificial sweeteners) so tea and fizzy water are the only things I regularly drink.

Graffitiqueen · 29/09/2020 12:02

I have the one with glass bottles. Love it.

Clymene · 29/09/2020 12:02

I got one from Lakeland which comes with 3 bottles. I love it - I drink A LOT of fizzy water

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 12:11

I have the Spirit and some extra bottles, so have 2 large and 2 small.
BIL has an electric model but I honestly can’t see what that adds. You just press the button et voila fizzy water.

For flavour, we just use squash or cordial. If anyone wanted cola or tonic etc I would just buy it, as the soda stream syrups are expensive.

mrsbyers · 29/09/2020 12:12

Use mine every day - even took it on holiday with us

megletthesecond · 29/09/2020 12:14

12yo DD really wants one.
We never have fizzy drinks though so I'm not reducing plastic by buying it.

mrsbyers · 29/09/2020 12:23

As an aside I love the new kombucha flavours they are doing , nothing artificial either

Brefugee · 29/09/2020 12:31

We have the Crystal one too, 3 bottles and always have cold sparkling water in the fridge.

In Germany everyone drinks sparkling water, usually they buy a crate of either glass or plastic reusable bottles, when the crate is empty you take it and the bottles back for the deposit. But a sodastream (or similar) is a lot easier

isthismylifenow · 29/09/2020 12:35

I rehomed one that my brother no longer used, and its been put to good use in our house. I don't drink fizzy drinks but dd drinks about 3-4 bottles of the sparkling water per day.

It is a few years old and is the most basic model.

Can I ask how long your gas canister lasts? Ours is lasting about 1.5 weeks Shock. I keep saying maybe she is adding too much fizz, then she says its not fizzy enough with just one blast.

I am not in the UK and ours costs around 8 pounds to refill. Is it about the same there?

DizzyPigeon · 29/09/2020 12:36

This is what I want

www.pureh2o.co.uk/range/taps/

Sparkling water on tap.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 29/09/2020 12:52

This is all great - thank you. DP has no idea he wants one for his birthday next week from the rest of the family. I'm very excited - I'm sure he will be too 🤣

I got one when I was first pregnant because fizzy water helps me with nausea. I love it!

spookmeout · 29/09/2020 13:00

Love love love mine. The syrups are rank so I started just putting squash in. I was drinking 2x 1 litre bottles of flavoured water a day. It's paid for itself several times over in 18 months.
I got a brita filter jug and now use that to fizz, it's as nice as bottled sparkling water and I'm having less aspartame now.

I got a deal with 2 cylinders and 3 large, 2 small bottles from their website. 2 cylinders is ideal as I can replace one and still have another to go at or the empty one sits in the car til the other one is empty and I panic

spookmeout · 29/09/2020 13:01

Our local eco shop sells the cylinders for £13, cheaper than Argos

AlternativePerspective · 29/09/2020 13:08

I make a lot of lemonade but couldn’t justify one sadly. But, while it saves on plastic isn’t there still an environmental issue there with whatever gas it is they pump out into the environment?

The syrups are revolting. You’d think they would have improved on those over the years....

Rainallnight · 29/09/2020 13:09

I’m going to be the lone voice that says I’m not that keen on mine. It takes up a lot of room and the end result doesn’t seem nearly as fizzy as proper fizzy water.

tywysoges · 29/09/2020 13:10

I love mine but then again I love Pandora bracelets and dungarees, so what do I know? Grin

TheKeatingFive · 29/09/2020 13:14

We’ve had one for ten years - use it everyday. I couldn’t recommend it more.

The syrups are foul, but you can buy naice cordials and use those instead.

Unfortunately the dream of turning all wine to bubbly didn’t really pan out. Turns out it’s about more than just the bubbles. But it was a fun experiment I guess.

ehb102 · 29/09/2020 13:16

I got a SodaStream this year. The price per litre of fizzy water if you use their gas refills is 25p a litre. Tesco value fizzy water is 8.5p a litre. I would never have bought one if I had known this. My friend said "Yes, they put the price of gas up recently". I only drink fizzy water, no soda, so it doesn't save me anything. The sparkle saver plan (which I have only just heard of) would bring the price down but not enough to match Tesco prices. We would be spending more on fizzy water than we do on power.

TroysMammy · 29/09/2020 13:16

It was for the platic reason we got one. My DP uses it as I'm not too bothered about fizzy water. We do a cylinder swap at The Range. It's on the worktop so used daily.

Fyzz · 29/09/2020 13:17

I bought one a couple of years ago when I was trying to cut down on plastic bottles.
I love it. I was irrationally worried during lockdown that I wouldn't be able to get gas bottlesGrin
I use it all the time. I add a dash of fruit juice or cordial.
You can make the water much fizzier than bottled fizzy water

tywysoges · 29/09/2020 13:17

My last cylinder cost a tenner from the range but looks like it’s gone up (£12.99 according to their website). I like plain fizzy water but also elderflower from Ikea, Robinson’s lime and mint, and Belvoir lemon and raspberry. I haven’t tried the newest range of syrups, the old one was ok but then they stopped selling the ones with sugar and I stopped buying them.

Fyzz · 29/09/2020 13:18

BTW I buy a refill gas bottle for £9.99 from a local hardware shop.

MadameBlobby · 29/09/2020 13:20

We got one for the same reasons along with moving to glass milk bottles and bars of soap. Go for it!
