To think there might be something dodgy going on?

A family living opposite us sold their house almost a year ago, the new neighbours have still not moved in.
They mentioned back before Xmas they would be hoping to move after Xmas, then they blamed Covid for not being able to get a removal company (despite other families having moved recently both on our street and surrounding).

They come and go randomly, turn up for half hour then leave again then don’t come back for a day or two. It’s a quiet dead end road so really obvious when cars come and go.

All the curtains and blinds the old neighbours left are still up and have remained shut. The windows also never opened even during the heat wave etc - we were out in the garden most the day with DC’s so it was very obvious they were the only house with everything shut.
Something tells me something odd is going on but maybe I’m over thinking 🤷‍♀️

Yes I am- the phone lights the lane which is in darkness .
Do you not work in the evening?
Obviously not as snooping 24/7

Gabbygirl13 · 29/09/2020 21:41

I find it more strange you are so curious you wrote this post. Why don't people worry about their own homes and lives. A bit sad really how society has become. That you would assume 'something dodgy' because you don't know differnet...

TitianaTitsling · 29/09/2020 21:52

Just adding to explanations. When we bought our first house all seemed OK, then we got the keys... The stench and stains from years of cigarettes, cats and dogs were covered during viewings but EVERYTHING needed replacing, the smell of nicotine, urine and tomcat spray permeated the plaster and the flooring. I sat and wept due to it, and it took ages to fix. Can imagine in lockdown would take doubly as long.

carreterra · 29/09/2020 22:02

OOOooh, what a hornet's nest this thread is becoming !!!
As they say in Lancashire " Get thee claws back in !" Grin

merlynred1 · 29/09/2020 22:13

Everyone posting things like “get a life” and “who cares” seems a little bit hypercritical to me. Clearly you all care enough to use your time to post on a thread you don’t care about! Hmm
And surely we’re all guilty of being nosey, why else is everyone on here wanting to know what’s going on in other peoples lives!

starlight13 · 29/09/2020 22:25

I find your behaviour very weird op. What has it got to do with you? It's not your property. They are probably growing cannabis.

RightYesButNo · 29/09/2020 22:34

OP - did you not see the comment from @ILiveNearby ? Explains neighbors in the exact situation as your neighbors (would be a bit wild if they were actually your neighbors, though). So these things happen every day. And ILiveNearby, so sorry for your family and I hope they’re able to move in soon.

Tallulah1972 · 29/09/2020 22:36

@Afibtomyboy
What would you actually say to the police in this scenario?

I’ve been in this situation. A lot of comings & goings at a house across the street which had just been bought. Something didn’t sit right. Lots of cars coming & going, different people in & out throughout the day over several months. It all looked very suspicious, to me & other people on the street. And yes, I did phone the police because I wanted peace of mind.

browneyes77 · 29/09/2020 22:44

@1Pinkfluffyelephant Honestly, some of the responses on here just show how many people are only concerned about themselves. I’d guess these would be the same people who would turn a blind eye if they saw their neighbours house being burgled because “it’s none of their business” in their eyes.

Apparently if you happen to notice unusual things with your neighbours as you’re going about your daily business, you’re “nosy” and a busy body” and people seem to think you must be glued to the window 24/7 taking notes.

If where you live is quite enclosed/quiet then it’s easy to spot things out of the ordinary whilst you’re doing mundane stuff like putting your washing or your bins out etc. Sometimes things just stand out and you can’t help but notice. Doesn’t make you nosy or a busy body, it just makes you observant.

Aldilogue · 29/09/2020 22:47

Geez. Why are some people so nasty. I’m with you OP. I look out on my street all the time because that’s I where I live and I like to know what’s going on.
I have a drug dealer opposite me and it’s the grandson of an older lady.
She came out the other day while my husband was kicking the footy with the kids on the street. She is aware we can see the people coming in and out and told him this big story about her being a seamstress and she’s really busy. He didn’t even ask!!
I’ve seen an ambulance arrive three times in a fortnight.
But hey I’m so cool and chilled out and so focussed on my own life that I wouldn’t notice that 🤔

winniestone37 · 29/09/2020 23:04

You are being ridiculous.

This is why people die and are not discovered for weeks or months now that is really sad how society has become because people are so wrapped up in their own homes and lives.
squeekums · 30/09/2020 05:52

Its got nothing to do with that actually.
Its more I simply DGAF if it's not affecting me, my family or property.
I don't need to freak myself out thinking there some big evil living near or working up some crazy situation in my head.
The saying is ignorance is bliss and it's damn true.

ittakes2 · 30/09/2020 06:24

We have similar - still waiting for council building permission. We initially dithered in making decisions over Christmas, were about to start than family matters happened and now the council is more than 2 months past the deadline of approval due to staff issues and covid.
I would not think anything dodgy is going on.

Iorderedyouapancake · 30/09/2020 06:29

Do people really buy houses to grow cannabis in? I’m probably being hopelessly naive but I always assumed it was something people rented for rather than buying!

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 30/09/2020 08:00

I think you're right to be concerned OP.
Ignore the dickheads posting about how you need to get a life, they're obviously happy to ignore possible crimes in their neighborhood. Seriously some of you are so spiteful.

msgreen · 30/09/2020 08:01

same kind of thing happened near us, it turned out to be a drugs factory
if nothing has changed in a month or so and your gut tells you somethings wrong ,a quick call to local plod can't hurt.
although usually its rented properties and they pay the rent etc then after 6 months or so just go.

Darkestseasonofall · 30/09/2020 08:28

@iorderedyouapancake they absolutely do buy houses. Imagine the aggravation of a landlord wanting to do inspections or want g to let someone in to service the boiler etc.
In my case an older woman bought the house for her family, she never moved in and hasn't been seen since. I imagine a young guy buying a family home may have looked suspicious. The house has been back up for sale since, but no one ever views it, I imagine it's part of the ruse.

Its really quite shrewd to buy the house, as they'll enjoy any price increase as well as the cannabis profits. I guess they need to be operating at a certain level to afford this though, it's more usually to rent a house for 6 months and hope to be left alone.

Petportraits · 30/09/2020 08:47

Would you not be creeped out if you found out your neighbours had been discussing your comings and goings? I would be really unnerved if I found a thread about me and my house and my movements and that all the neighbours are discussing it. I have lived on my street for years and I couldn’t tell you if my neighbours had changed their curtains as I have no knowledge of what they look like previously so a change would go totally unnoticed. Some people just have different routines, lifestyles and commitments. I wouldn’t think there was anything suspicious underfoot unless there was more evidence.

BengalGal · 30/09/2020 09:04

If it were people trafficking there would be more activity. If weed farm you can have a sniff by the doors windows or vents and also you would see lights at night. Probably more coming and going as well. So you can eliminate that one yourself easily. Otherwise there are hundreds of innocent explanations. I’m sorry people are taking the time to accuse you of being a busy body. They have not much to do I guess. It’s good to be observant. You have not been intrusive. It’s quite normal to be curious.

Pogmella · 30/09/2020 09:31

Maybe it’s haunted and they’re awaiting exorcism. Happens every day.

ElleMac44 · 30/09/2020 10:24

I expect it's to do with work they want done to the property, builders are very busy at the moment, with the extra precautions, and there was a shortage during the height of the pandemic of building materials across the country, I know this because my in laws are in rented accommodation for 6 months waiting for work to be done on their new property for the exact reasons I stated.

Opalwindfury · 30/09/2020 10:47

If your so pressed which you are since you’ve made this thread, why not camp out at your window when the “family” arrive give it 20 mins act like your walking by or walking the dog and introduce yourself you might as well since you’ve been spying on them for so long.
Also if it anything dodgy most of the “activity” will be at night not in the day so better get your night gear out.

Grrrpredictivetex · 30/09/2020 11:13

People but houses then immediately rent them out.
ellyeth · 30/09/2020 12:32

To be honest, I think this would be of interest to me if it were a house near where I live. Perhaps it is a little nosy but I think it would be natural for most people to eventually start to speculate.

I think some of the posts on here are a bit nasty.
