To think if you can't control your sphincter

You shouldn't go to a yoga class!

Fair enough that the odd trump occasionally pops out (never happened to me but can see that it might) but to fart on and off throughout the class at every change of position I think is fairly grim.

Bearing in mind we are trying to avoid peoples oral fumes, I don't want to spend 50 minutes breathing in their anal ones!

Before I get attacked by people mentioning physical problems that may cause gas, I have suffered from IBS in the past and would not attend a yoga class if I knew I was having a particularly bad day.

YABU - Everyone can enjoy yoga, even if they are tooting throughout the class.
YANBU - that is grim.

I've not been at yoga for years, but I've been trying to find a class. I'd love to go back. However, in the many years I did go, I never once heard anyone let one rip. That can only be a good thing as I'm ridiculously childish and I fear I'd collapse in giggles. I know it's just a bodily function but I can't help it. Accidental, public farts will never not be funny.

I shamed myself at yoga in a different way,

My brother changed my ringtone on my mobile phone without telling me. I accidentally left my mobile phone switched on - which was bad enough. My phone rang during this (terribly serious) yoga class. As I scurried to answer it, the class was treated to a very loud ringtone song. The South Park song "Shut your fucking face uncle-fucker". I hated South Park, my brother loved it so he thought it would be a hilarious prank. I nearly died of embarrassment. Only slight redeeming factor was that it wasn't during the meditation section at the end. And of course, because I didn't recognise the ring-tone I hadn't realised it was my phone at first. IT WENT ON FOR AGES!!!!!!! I wish I'd just let slip an accidental fart instead. Would have been much less embarrassing :D

Yuck that’s disgusting.

To be fair some postures have “wind relieving” listed as a benefit. I feel very bad for those that say they couldn’t go to yoga in case they farted, especially those with health issues in that area. Can I suggest you try an online, live class with an experienced classical yoga teacher. Nobody would know if you did let rip and as long as you hadn’t eaten for two hours before class, you might find it very helpful. I was very reluctant to switch to online classes, but I think it’s definitely worked out very well. Students are able to control their environment, much less competing, no travel etc,

Man farts are worse than women farts so I would have quite demonstrably moved my mat to the far end of the room.
Lady farts aren't too bad. Sisterhood. Though my stomach churns at the mere whiff.

Were they smellers?

I knew when I saw this thread that you'd get jumped on with all the indignant "Well, I have x or y medical condition which means I fart like a trooper approximately 75 times an hour so how dare you suggest I lock myself in the house?" posts.

@ExhaustedFlamingo

Grin Grin and the worst part is that you didn’t realise it was your phone.

The voice of MN has spoken and I was not being unreasonable so there sticks out tongue childishly. I have another class this week so will come back and report on further fart frenzies.

Will take advice from those who kindly added to this thread and a) move mat away b) not call it tooting and c) have more compassion for those with issues that may lead to farting (not being facetious with final point). However, nothing and no one will make me have a pre yoga enema as prescribed by @Anordinarymum Confused
