Currently blocked in by police car

Police are visiting someone on my street for some reason and have parked behind me in my very long narrow drive. Haven't asked if they can park there. Lots of space on the road to park however they would be on double yellows. If I needed to go anywhere, I wouldn't be able to move. No idea which house they're in. I need to go out in 35 minutes for a flu jab appointment. I know they could be dealing with a serious emergency but no idea why they're parked on my drive! WIBU to drive very slowly backwards and gently nudge their car off my drive? (Only kidding). Slightly miffed. Should I try and find them and ask them to move?

The odd police woman on thread I think?

DumplingsAndStew · 27/09/2020 19:48

I think the OP did exactly the right thing. She asked if the car was able to be moved. When it wasn't, she cancelled her plans.

What should she have done?

Yes, the emergency services are allowed to park on double yellow lines - but only if not causing an obstruction.

otterbaby · 27/09/2020 19:50

"Phone the station like a grass" 😂 OP I don't blame you at all for being miffed! I think you did the right thing ringing and seeing if they could move. I have my jab on Tuesday and I wouldn't miss it for the world because I know I won't get another anytime soon.

lasangoles · 27/09/2020 19:50

I hardly called 999 did I? I wasn't rude. I was inconvenienced and even the woman on the phone was lovely about it and said it was fine to call and that they shouldn't be parked in my drive. I even said 'I feel like this is such a trivial thing to call about' and she said absolutely not!

lasangoles · 27/09/2020 19:51

Also if they were dealing with a dangerous or heated situation it would hardly be a good idea for me to distract them by knocking on the door would it.

HelpIcantfindaname · 27/09/2020 19:53

Have they moved it yet OP?

lasangoles · 27/09/2020 19:53

Yes they are gone

@Lovelydovey

See if you can identify which house they are in and ask very politely if they can move. If not try 111 and again ask if they can contact them and ask them to move so you can go out for an important appointment.

Nothing to do with the OP but not everyone likes or respects the police.
I’m sure some people would be out there filming and foaming at the mouth whilst uploading their footage to YouTube.
All the comments would be how selfish the police are. There are loads of people who provoke the police and film them.

Hearwego · 27/09/2020 19:57

Did anyone think to dial 911 ?

slashlover · 27/09/2020 19:58

Did anyone think to dial 911 ?

Why?

cologne4711 · 27/09/2020 19:59

Fucking hell I hope the people moaning on this thread don't ever phone the police if they need them

I doubt any of us will, we know they won't come, too busy apparently checking supermarket car parks to make sure people haven't travelled from outside the county.

And they could have parked on your drive by mistake In broad daylight? It wasn't dark when they parked there.

Flowersmakemyday · 27/09/2020 20:01

None of us know why the police officers have parked on your drive and it must be annoying but thank you for your patience and understanding. We don't know what they are dealing with

I was obviously kidding.

sammylady37 · 27/09/2020 20:03

@safariboot

Parking on a random private driveway seems very unusual. I can only assume they wanted to be out of sight of where-ever they're visiting. But it's still crappy policing.

Maybe I'm selfish, but I think I would have leaned on the horn of my own car, and if that ends up disturbing whatever the police are doing then serves them right!

No ‘maybe’ about it

Reading the responses on this thread is shocking. yes, there are arsehole coppers about, but the vast majority of them are decent, hardworking people often putting themselves in danger for the sake of others. I would bet my hat they were attending an emergency and didn’t have time to park without inconveniencing anyone.

sammylady37 · 27/09/2020 20:07

OP cold have a friendly word and ask what the problem is / was if they see them leave. The police officers will either be apologetic or unsympathetic

The op has no right to know ‘what the problem is/was’, the person they were dealing with has a right to privacy.

SignOnTheWindow · 27/09/2020 20:07

@BonnieMcflurry

And what do you do phone the station like a grass and you don't even have the guts to ask why yourself. Should be ashamed they are doing a job that we should respect and understand.
What the fuck?
EarlLeighIndamornin · 27/09/2020 20:08

Did you ask why they parked there?????

TheDuchessofMalfy · 27/09/2020 20:10

I think you’ve been very restrained OP! This would really have annoyed me.

Hearwego · 27/09/2020 20:13

And the OP has a right to not be blocked their own property. And I understand we don’t know the situation
The OP could say something like- excuse me officers, I can see you’re doing your job, but just to let you know your vehicle is blocking my driveway and I can’t leave to attend an appointment.
Then await an explanation...
If not then OP doesn’t have to say anything and let them leave when they have finished.
Not rocket science is it?...
Yes some coppers are arseholes but many of them aren’t.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/09/2020 20:14

It could just be that the had nowhere else to park and were in a hurry. They've not necessarily done it to just be an arsehole.

There are entitled arseholes everywhere - what makes you think that none of them are in the police? It was the obvious solution for them to park on the double yellows and slightly inconvenience passing traffic for a very good reason rather than potentially imprison an innocent person in her home. If they needed to hide from e.g. an abuser, then they must have heard of unmarked cars.

The police aren't immune from having to abide by the law themelves, unless they have a genuine reason why they need to in order to do their job. It isn't Life On Mars.

As for telling OP to call a taxi, why on earth should she have to? If she'd been a wheelchair user and returning to her house, but prevented from entering her home because of an illegally parked car blocking her way, would people just be telling her to stop fussing and go and pay for a hotel room for the night?

FOJN · 27/09/2020 20:14

Police (and other emergency services) are permitted to park on double yellow lines in emergency situations so there really is no excuse for parking on someone's drive.

MintyMabel · 27/09/2020 20:14

WIBU to drive very slowly backwards and gently nudge their car off my drive?

You can’t actually be serious with this question.
