To call out my work colleague on her unacceptable view

Marg33t · 27/09/2020 17:19

She posted today on Facebook that she was sick of hearing about the death of one police officer as there's more important things going on and it's a risk they accept.

I've got family members in the force and quite honestly they are hero's doing very difficult work that not many people would do. I can't stand this anti police sentiment. I've got a meeting with her and many others tomorrow afternoon and I'm worried I won't be able to keep my cool. Would it be unreasonable to send her a private message to say how offensive her post was? I want to say nothing, but I m not sure I can

OP posts:
buckeejit · 28/09/2020 11:40

Oh God YAB soooo U OP.

I think you should email HR back & retract your complaint. That really isn't professional.

And police aren't all heroes ffs, they are paid a decent wage to do a job. Some of them are dicks & the blue lives matter reference is offensive

Cadent · 28/09/2020 11:40

@GetOffYourHighHorse

Crass and insensitive to you perhaps. In view of the tragic murder of Sgt Ratana I suggest it is more crass and insensitive of you to complain about it.

Do you really not see why it’s insensitive to appropriate BLM for Blue Lives Matter?

Cadent · 28/09/2020 11:41

@Marg33t

Actually it was her that mentioned blue lives (dont) matter first, so you're all agreeing with me that she was unacceptable and needed to be reported! 😊
Do you seriously think any rational person here believes a word you say at this point?
AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 11:42

That argument would work in the USA, but we are in the UK and it has a different meaning. Importing offence and context from a country 4000 miles away does little to add to the debate. We might have a common language but that's where the similarities end.

You might have a point, if we did not have a problem with institutional racism in the police here in the UK. Unfortunately, we do.

Cadent · 28/09/2020 11:43

So you’re saying Blue Lives Matter has always been a thing in the UK unrelated to Black Lives Matter?

missyB1 · 28/09/2020 11:43

She has shown you who she is now. Delete her from your social media and keep your distance from her. You don’t want much to do with someone so unpleasant. We can’t choose our colleagues unfortunately.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/09/2020 11:43

so you're all agreeing with me that she was unacceptable and needed to be reported!

I can imagine the eye rolling in HR when they receive this nonsense.

You're like that licky kid in class that constantly tattles, while failing to realise the teachers hate them.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 28/09/2020 11:44

'Do you not think, just possibly, that officers may moderate their behaviour just a little bit when they are being followed by a film crew from a national television channel?'

Maybe but haven't you heard of body cams? I believe many front line officers wear them nowadays so everything they say or do is recorded plus everyone has mobile phones to film altercations. They face abuse and assauits daily and for someone to say 'they don't like the Police' is pathetic.

Cadent · 28/09/2020 11:46

@GetOffYourHighHorse except when body cam footage mysteriously goes missing.

Caelano · 28/09/2020 11:46

OP you are just digging the hole of embarrassment deeper. You’ve shown yourself to be a spiteful, malicious sneak and back pedalling to try to claim your colleague said something she didn’t isn’t helping.

Reflect on what you have done. A person who sends anonymous screenshots because someone has posted someone they don’t agree with, is likely to have some deep rooted sense of inadequacy, unhappiness or resentment. (Btw it’s really not that anonymous because the workplace can trace your IP address) It may very well come back to bite you.

We’re not talking about reporting hate speech, racism, homophobia or extremist views. This is someone giving an opinion, that there are other more significant things happening in the world. You may not like it. You may not agree with it. But you are a spiteful spineless shit if you really have screenshotted and sent it to your workplace.

Just remember, karma can be a real bitch too.

No, I'm saying context is everything and using examples from the USA doesn't help anyones understanding of what the issues with policing are in the UK.
thedancingbear · 28/09/2020 11:59

@GetOffYourHighHorse except when body cam footage mysteriously goes missing.

The body cam evidence is well known for just 'disappearing' unfortunately. Like the CCTV footage from the platform where John Charles de Menezes was shot.

fatherfintanstack · 28/09/2020 12:00

now don't get me wrong, several of my family are in the police and are hugely dedicated to their work.

I think Matt Ratana sounded like a good man and it is terribly sad that he was shot.

However, can you not see the irony and sheer cheek of repurposing BLM as Blue Lives Matter??

PurpleWave · 28/09/2020 12:07

Even if you don't agree with her, do you really want to jeopardise her job because she has a different opinion?

For everyone who says cancel culture doesn't exist, this is a brilliant example of it.
Remember next time it might be you with the 'wrong' opinion.

CrooksAndNannies · 28/09/2020 12:13

How's it going with trying to get this deleted, OP?

Hmm
LH1987 · 28/09/2020 12:22

Horrible thing to put on Facebook, but no don’t say anything, just delete her.

gurglebelly · 28/09/2020 12:39

So let me get this straight, you wrote your OP asking about sending her a private message to say you felt her views were unacceptable, was strongly advised against and so decided to massively escalate and try and get her in trouble at work instead? WTAF?

Yesmate · 28/09/2020 12:54

OP please come back and update after you have reported. I could do with cheering up today. Would love to be there when HR open your complaint.

Caelano · 28/09/2020 13:03

I’m fully expecting the OP to come back with a great work of fiction whereby HR take her anonymous complaint very seriously and the colleague gets fired on the spot!

thedancingbear · 28/09/2020 13:19

OP won't be back.

HR have confiscated her laptop :)

ClementineWoolysocks · 28/09/2020 13:19

Unfriend her and move on.

ClementineWoolysocks · 28/09/2020 13:26

Wow OP you really jumped the shark with your actions, let's hope said shark turns around and promptly bites you on the arse.

altforvarmt · 28/09/2020 13:28

Your action was underhand, nasty and vindictive, OP.

I suspect it will come back to bite you. Be careful not to say anything anyone might disagree with, won't you?

Griselda1 · 28/09/2020 13:38

It's a disgusting attitude, if she verbalises it in work take her to task but i'd ignore the social media comment.

LindaEllen · 28/09/2020 13:41

If you don't like her views, hide her posts.
I don't agree with everything she said but at the same time it DOES annoy me that single cases of deaths get picked up on and talked about so much. Not because they don't deserve the attention, but because there are so many others that do, too, and never get anything whatsoever. Similar to when Madeleine McCann went missing and the whole world seemed to be looking for her, yet other children didn't even make the national media when they went missing.

You're just emotional about it because you have family in the police.

It is kind of unnecessary for people to post things like that on Facebook, but you would be unreasonable to call her out on it.
