and what you’re thermostat is set at?

I stuck mine at 25 for about 2 hours (mainly to kick start drying washing). We're fairly well insulated so I find a quick blast does the job and then the house stays nice and warm for the rest of the evening! Plus my fluffy blanket and my closest joggers! ;)

Topseyt · 27/09/2020 03:12

Thermostat set at 20°. It is on a timer morning and evening year round but in the summer months it doesn't come on.

It has kicked in a number of times in the last few days though. I don't care. I want to be comfortable in my own home.

Why do people seem to think that this is a race to the bottom every year? Who can be the coldest for the longest?

PhilCornwall1 · 27/09/2020 04:49

Ours is never off. It's usually set to 18, it's at 19.5 at the moment (I think, can't remember) and has just come on. Have had it coming on since Tuesday.

Ginfordinner · 27/09/2020 04:58

Ours is set at 20.5 degrees and comes on when the temperature dips below that.

I can never understand competitive "who is the toughest mumsnetter" threads like this, or people who use the calendar instead of their common sense the temperature to decide whether to put the heating on.

sanityisamyth · 27/09/2020 05:38

The central heating is the one thing about my old house that I miss. I've got electric heaters here which are extortionate. Using them last winter caused my electricity bills to go from £58 a month to £129 a month. The heaters are staying off all winter!!

Angelina82 · 27/09/2020 05:47

Oh no poor you @sanityisamyth! Your post has made me feel cold all of a sudden and so grateful for my central heating x

Be very grateful! Luckily my flat is pretty well insulated and it's middle floor so the neighbour's heat it for me 🤣

You do know it’s not compulsory to reply to this thread? Maybe you should have applied that common sense you speak of and just scrolled on by. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In that case I hereby withdraw any sympathies I just bestowed upon you @sanityisamyth. Smile

This. Why do people turn the heating off? Why shiver just because it's the "summer"? If it's cold enough, it's cold enough!

I just know someone will miss the point and reply that they only turn their heating off when it's warm weather, so to state the obvious: your heating is already off when the house is warm, thanks to the thermostat.

popcornlover · 27/09/2020 06:06

Thought you were all against climate change. Turn it off, it’s not cold. Do your bit.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/09/2020 06:11

Just come home from hospital so yes, dh put the heating on to make sure it’s warm enough, which it was.

I spend most of my spare time outside in the summer and spring. On a sunny day it’s often warmer outside than it is indoors. Why the hell am I going to waste money and impact on the environment to heat up an house that I’m not even in?

There is a frost on the ground outside for the first time this season , so I feel it is now acceptable to crank on the heating .

Mariola321 · 27/09/2020 06:37

I have storage heaters and they’re too hot now. But can’t turn off! Have windows open now. 🤦‍♀️

Gooseysgirl · 27/09/2020 06:37

Ours was on for the first time in months yesterday... cue another winter of me and DH in thermostat wars (I turn it up, he turns it down)

Have you tried the oil heaters? You can plug in your main room and move them around on wheels.
FuzzyPuffling · 27/09/2020 06:46

Are you kidding? It was wall to wall warm sunshine here yesterday ( Cornwall). I got mildly sunburnt!

speakout · 27/09/2020 06:47

I have used my heating all through the summer.
It's currently minus one outside this morning- of course I have my heating on.

I don't have a set temperature for my thermostat or use my timer.
I prefer to use my heating manually.
If we are relaxing in the evening watching a movie I will put on my heating at 21/22 for a couple of hours. If I am having a busy day washing floors, changing bedding or just back from the gym in a sweaty puddle I prefer a cold house.

sanityisamyth · 27/09/2020 06:49

@Littered5 that's a good idea. I'll look into it if it gets colder :) thanks!

OllysArmy · 27/09/2020 06:59

Our heating is usually set at 20 or 21 as that is comfortable for us, especially if moving around and never on overnight as I just wouldn’t sleep. As the house hasn’t got that low yet it hasn’t been on I am enjoying being cool (not hot and sweaty) for the first time in months and have now changed from shorts and a Vest to jeans and a long sleeve top.
