To ask how much the annual fees are for private schools in the UK?

I attended a comp in NW England, so have no point of reference. I’ve lived in the US for nearly twenty years, and private schools in NYC and its surrounding suburbs average upwards of $50k per pupil per year.

I read thread after thread on MN about people making sacrifices in order to give their children a private education, so I guess I’m just curious: Eton and its ilk aside, are private schools just priced more affordably in the UK?

Prep probably £10-15k per year generally, some in London May be more I expect.

Senior £15k+, I believe eton and the like are about £40k. Most day schools near me are about £15-20k.

millymollymoomoo · 26/09/2020 21:32

Depends where you are. I’m south east. Primary around £10-13k secondaries around -£15-17k

LongPauseNoAnswer · 26/09/2020 21:34

For comparison sake we paid 40,000 Swiss Francs a year for DD in Geneva which equates to roughly £33,000.

stopgap · 26/09/2020 21:34

Gosh, that’s quite a difference. Even average ones in NYC cost the same as an Eton education.

London, 18-25k per year

similarminimer · 26/09/2020 21:35

London prep school £20,000

Echobelly · 26/09/2020 21:36

London private secondary schools about £20k+, maybe lesser known ones nearer £15k pa (I think one local to us that's not well known is about that much). We discovered we can't afford them but also are significantly above the threshold of getting any financial help either! I mean, there was only one DH was potentially interested in (he'd been privately educated the whole time) but even he had to admit that, other than lovely facilities, he didn't see it as massively superior to the best state schools we'd looked at.

CherryPavlova · 26/09/2020 21:37

Ours were 50% fees which were £20k

VickySunshine · 26/09/2020 21:39

I paid £15k per year. That included transport and catering. Didn't include uniform or extra curricular stuff, all in I'd say nearer £17k.

IndecentFeminist · 26/09/2020 21:39

Depends where you are. Two local schools here are approx £8k p/a and £15k p/a for secondary.

VickySunshine · 26/09/2020 21:40

Outside London

IndecentFeminist · 26/09/2020 21:40

That's day, not boarding.

stopgap · 26/09/2020 21:41

The cheaper private schools in the US are the parochial schools, usually under the administration of the local Catholic diocese. They are more like $15k a year.

Depends. I’m in Edinburgh, the private schools round here are about £13,000 a year. Where I grew up there were a couple of more rural (and predominantly boarding) schools which were about £24,000 a year.

girlicorne · 26/09/2020 21:46

We pay 14k a year for secondary, not in London.

SeasonFinale · 26/09/2020 21:50

In Cambridge they range between £16k and £23k for secondary except crammer like MPW etc which are higher.

eurochick · 26/09/2020 21:53

We pay around £12k for a Home Counties prep school.

OpEd · 26/09/2020 21:58

Every school l've looked at publishes them on their website. Even within the same town ours vary, some are double others.

Delta1 · 26/09/2020 21:59

Look on their websites under the Admissions tab. They will almost always display a fee breakdown.

LadyCatStark · 26/09/2020 22:01

In the North West private secondary schools are £12000-£13000, rising slightly as you go through the years.

baffledcoconut · 26/09/2020 22:01

Places like Marlborough and Cheltenham you’ll be paying 40k a year boarding.

Greeneyes78 · 26/09/2020 22:10

my brother went to a private school in london and fees were 18k.

Nancydrawn · 26/09/2020 22:29

OP, there are plenty of cheaper private schools in the States outside of NYC.

The cheapest are certainly the religious schools--my friend just moved to a place in the South and a private evangelical elementary school near her was going for under $5,000/year. She ended up going with the fancy nonsectarian private school in town, where the fees were something like $11,000/year.

The schools in NYC are a different universe. (Some of them are also a truly exceptional education.)

timeforanew · 27/09/2020 06:44

Prep around 4k per term (so 12-13k per year, reception less, year 6 more).
Secondary around 6k per term, but since you don’t need holiday care anymore costs actually stay the same per year.
these are for (very) good but not famous schools in the southeast.

Ifailed · 27/09/2020 06:59

one of the problems of trying to find out the cost of private schools is trying to find out about bursaries. Many will boast about how many pupils receive one, but not the amount - it might be a couple of £100, or a large percentage of the fees, but they are all very coy about disclosing the facts.
