To ask how much the annual fees are for private schools in the UK?

I attended a comp in NW England, so have no point of reference. I’ve lived in the US for nearly twenty years, and private schools in NYC and its surrounding suburbs average upwards of $50k per pupil per year.

I read thread after thread on MN about people making sacrifices in order to give their children a private education, so I guess I’m just curious: Eton and its ilk aside, are private schools just priced more affordably in the UK?

Varies, £12k for private day secondary here, a few are cheaper eg belonging to religious groups and public schools are much more especially if they board. Though full boarding is "only" the equivalent of $50k approx!

Local Montessori primary is £8000 per year - only googled out if curiosity/to see if it was cheaper than nursery (It is before the 30 free hours get introduced!)

I'm in Edinburgh and I've just checked and my son's school's fees are £15k for senior. He left a couple of years ago and I don't think they've gone up much in the interim.

London is £18-28k as we are looking now. Boarding is up to £40k+. I live 70 miles outside London and pay £15,000 a year. Secondary is slightly more than primary.

My two are in private prep school in the East of England - it’s about £11k a year I think rising to about £14k as they get older

SourMilkGhyll · 27/09/2020 09:32

Round here £10-15,000 for prep and £25-30,000 for age 13+

Sophoa · 27/09/2020 09:32

£20-25k here for secondary. Big difference to other parts of the country where £12k-15k is still perfectly possible for good day schools

SourMilkGhyll · 27/09/2020 09:35

Sorry. That was boarding.

Socksey · 27/09/2020 09:36

But earnings in NYC are quite high aren’t they? My aunt was a teacher in NYC at the same level of seniority as me. My full time wage would be close to £40k hers was over $100k so close to double (£78k) We both worked in state schools.

PrimeraVez · 27/09/2020 09:44

For context, I’m in the Middle East and pay around £10k a year for my 4 year old to go to a British curriculum private school.

EekThreek · 27/09/2020 09:45

There are two in my small rural town, the girls day school is £15k per year, the co-ed is £26k for days and £36-39k for boarding.

mamaoffourdc · 27/09/2020 10:12

About 21k a year

caringcarer · 27/09/2020 10:25

An independent senior school near us £7200 a term. Stationery, lunches and trips extra.

monkeyonthetable · 27/09/2020 10:53

Good secondaries in Home Counties are around £18-20k pa, all in.

wonkylegs · 27/09/2020 11:00

North east of England
our local private schools are £14k, £14k, £13k (offers a discount to staff at local hospital) and £10k
All are day places with some compulsory additional costs - school lunches, exam fees etc
The local boarding school is £26k a term for boarders

wonkylegs · 27/09/2020 11:01

All at secondary level - less for prep and more for 6th form

lioncitygirl · 27/09/2020 11:03

London here - about £5k/term.

unchienandalusia · 27/09/2020 11:43

Surrey here. Prep school is £19k per annum. Two local independents (not public) are similar. Public schools near us are around £30k for day and £36k for boarding.
