Cleaner wants to me to put a toilet brush in every bathroom

toiletbrushtrauma · 24/09/2020 08:59

We have three toilets and just started with a new cleaner.

I've been asked by the agency to put a toilet brush in every toilet. I don't want to, I hate toilet brushes I don't want three of them.

I've looked at the disposable ones but they are expensive and don't look great for the environment.

Never had a cleaner make this request before, is it usual?

I hate the thought of loo brushes however agree that sometimes theyre needed if the loo gets lime scale. I really dont like people replacing them every few weeks tho, so so bad for the environment and that's the exact attitude that we need to change

Chocaholic9 · 24/09/2020 11:10

You're being very unreasonable.

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2020 11:12

We have loo brushes and use rubber gloves - wash hands after cleaning loo with rubber gloves on and then put aside for next look cleaning - use other rubber gloves for other tasks.

Use bleach and fizzy tablets to clean loo bowl

gubbbbbddaaaa · 24/09/2020 11:12

I have four bathrooms and have one in each one .. I'm not keen but I tuck them around the side so they are not seen and buy the cheap ones and then change regularly . You can't keep loose clean without them ime !

MulticolourMophead · 24/09/2020 11:16

@81Byerley

You can buy silicone brushes, which are more hygienic, but as an ex cleaner I can tell you that a brush is essential. At home, I clean the loo every morning, and I use the brush every time, on a loo that looks clean, because I reckon it needs it. I put bleach down first, brush round, then leave the brush in the toilet in the bleach water while I finish cleaning the bathroom. The brush always seems clean to me!
That's what I do. And my brush is kept out of sight behind the toilet.
knittingaddict · 24/09/2020 11:19

But the environment.

The only way loo brushes are acceptable is to replace them regularly and that seems irresponsible.

I think you could get disposable ones a few years ago, but even that seemed wrong. No idea if you can still get those.

TheKeatingFive · 24/09/2020 11:19

id rather stick my hand down the toilet to clean it than have a shit covered brush hanging around in the bathroom

Why wouldn’t you clean the brush?

There is no need to leave shit covered brushes hanging around - it’s not rocket science.

nobodysdaughter · 24/09/2020 11:29

When I cleaned pub toilets when I was younger I didn't use a brush, I used long cuffed rubber gloves, a green scrubber, and shitloads of strong chemicals. I can't imagine what would've been said if I'd refuse to get my (fully gloved) hand down there to scrub and insisted on using a brush. Admittedly this wasn't the best for the environment.
Maybe domestic cleaning is a more genteel art? Or maybe times have changed?

TheVanguardSix · 24/09/2020 11:35

I won't be buying them I'll just tell her not to clean the bowl (I don't leave it covered in shit anyway like the rest of you seem to).

Grin This made me laugh. Britain. A nation of shit covered toilets! Oooh-arrrrgh! They're all at it... leavin' shit... on their toilets, the vermin!

We have a toilet brush in both of our bathrooms. I hardly use them (I'm our cleaner, regrettably), but they are handy to use when the once-in-a-blue-moon streak o' shit leaves its calling card. I like to think we're a family of Kevin Bridges' ghosties most of the time. Grin

gubbbbbddaaaa · 24/09/2020 11:35

Yes to cleaning the brush .. after cleaning the loo I flush it again and it washes the brush .

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 24/09/2020 11:36

This attitude, spending money and pouring numerous strong chemicals, bleach, fizzy tabs etc down the toilet rather than use a brush and elbow grease because you are too squeamish, explains a lot about modern life.

True.

I would but I have 3 teenage sons ........
lioncitygirl · 24/09/2020 11:36

Use a loo blade if your odd about toilet brushes.

PainyRuddles · 24/09/2020 11:37

Have not read the thread. Saw thread title, came to recommend silicone toilet brushes. No poo water.

I know of a great MLM scheme for them too Wink

feistyoneyouare · 24/09/2020 11:38

Can't your guests shit straight?

I personally make all my guests take a shitting test before they stay, just to satisfy my mind on that point(!)

SoulofanAggron · 24/09/2020 11:38

There are ones you can get that last longer and also don't hold mank on them.

cctvrec · 24/09/2020 11:38

@burglarbettybaby

I don't like them either but i would buy them as i understand cleaning other people's toilets is yuck. We use black harpic here. It's brilliant
Black Harpic is fantastic to clean but it doesn't half stink something awful don't you think? It's a smell I can't even describe.

I like a nice clean bleach smell but coming from previous homes with septic tanks that break down waste without chemicals, we had to stick to more natural non chemical methods or it would stop working. So toilet brushes and Ecover products it is.

ginghamtablecloths · 24/09/2020 11:41

YABVU. I have two toilets and a brush in each. It's convenient. It's a shame if you don't like them but why make life difficult for the cleaner? It's a horrible job at the best of times - I've done it. You can always place it in a cupboard when it's not cleaning day.

toiletbrushtrauma · 24/09/2020 11:41

@lilfoxfur

Wow what a first world problem... "my cleaner doesn't want to put her hands in any of my three toilets during a pandemic"

I feel really sorry for you.

Check the category again it's called 'am I being unreasonable?' not 'do I have a first world problem?' Grin

toiletbrushtrauma · 24/09/2020 11:46

I'd just like to finish off the thread by saying absolutely nothing anybody on this thread has said has made me remotely want to go out and buy three toilet brushes.

I have enjoyed the cognitive dissonance of bleach won't stop you contacting D and V but scrubbing with a poo stained toilet brush will though Grin

This reminds me of the time dh's back went when we were staying in a large budget chain hotel in London. He was in bed when house keeping came in and he said he was horrified to see her using the towel to scrub inside the toilet, then proceeded to clean the sink with it. I know they get washed after, but still, would rather there was a toilet brush in there.

TheKeatingFive · 24/09/2020 11:53

scrubbing with a poo stained toilet brush will though

But why would it be poo stained? These things are remarkably easy to clean.

I’m enjoying the cognitive dissonance between MNetters famous zeal for cleaning, yet belief that loo brushes present an impossible challenge in this regard and thus doomed to remain covered in shit for ever.

ZarasHouse · 24/09/2020 11:55

The way I was taught to professionally clean toilets was

Cleaner, flush, brush, flush, cleaner.

If we didn't brush (or scrub) the toilet it wasn't deemed clean.
