To lie about my location to the holiday accommodation?

Rae34 · 21/09/2020 23:45

I am single and live alone so this period has been very difficult. I have also worked from home since March and have been very careful with who I see and where I go. Just took my temperature there & normal. About 99% sure I am virus free.

Anyway I had booked 3 days in a cottage by the seaside, about 2 hours drive. I am an artist and have been so looking forward to finishing my project and getting some breathing space before what lies before us in the next season.

The booking.com accommodation has just been in touch asking where I am coming from because I am in a restricted area they will not accommodate me any longer. Well sadly I am in such an area. AIBU to tell a white lie and say I'm coming from the next city over (which is not affected)?

I have been so, so careful and was so looking forward to a short break. Also doubt I'd get a refund and it wasn't cheap.

@msgreen

Suck it up , we are all struggling. No no no do the right thing , if everybody stuck to the rules we wouldn’t be so fucked
OP is sticking to the rules. Do keep up.

Don't even think about lying! The restrictions are there for a reason. This makes me so mad if I knew you I would be reporting you.

PurpleDaisies · 25/09/2020 15:10

Reporting for what? The op isn’t doing anything wrong.

RTFT.

Stripyhoglets1 · 25/09/2020 16:08

Great chunks of the country are getting additional restrictions added weekly. These do not yet include going elsewhere for a break with your own household!

Stripyhoglets1 · 25/09/2020 16:14

And I've read the updates stating that when the accommodation were provided with govt links they agreed op could go.

Foxylass · 25/09/2020 16:30

Please do not lie and do not go. There are guidelines in place to make sure that you will get a full refund (I am a holiday let owner). IF you were to go and have the virus with you, you are putting staff - often owners - at risk, future guests and all of their families. You would also risk the place you are going being closed and/or being fined.

I understand that you need a break...but not in this way. Think of your mental health if you knew that you had taken the virus (un-wittingly) with you.

SeaDreaming · 25/09/2020 16:32

Agh. I'm booked in at a guest house in the next county on Tuesday and meant to be travelling on public transport from Leeds. I don't think I can go, can I? Confused

Read the thread. Or at least the OP's update. Or even the OP, where she said they were NOT going to refund her.

If the Leeds restrictions are the same as greater Manchester, then yes you can will be able to go as long as not with another household. Only South Wales has banned travel out of country, as fas as I am aware there is nowhere in England that has done so
SeaDreaming · 25/09/2020 18:00

Thanks! I know there's new limits on mixing households, but I'm going alone.

I've booked off peak tickets and have a change at a really quiet point, so I think it should be relatively safe with PPE and SD; I just need to let them know by tomorrow if I need to cancel.

ceeveebee · 25/09/2020 18:01

Having read the BBC it says Leeds will be brought in line with the West Yorkshire restrictions (Bradford etc) which are here and don’t restrict either the use of public transport or your ability to travel out of area

SeaDreaming · 25/09/2020 18:03

Brilliant - thank you! 👍

peppermintteadrinker · 25/09/2020 18:04

Hope you have a wonderful time! So glad all OK. This bluddy thing causes sooo much stress. Just living is hard at the moment. You enjoy pet!

me109f · 26/09/2020 12:21

I might take the holiday in those circumstances. Government rules are well meant and to be adhered to, but they lack flexibility in individual circumstances. If you are someone who lives in isolation and are close to an area that is 'judged safe to travel from' I might go for a covid test (my son had one a week ago and got the negative result the same day) as check up, and if clear, review your holiday position. Clearly you may be very, very low risk, but the cottage owner needs to be protected as they do not want a virus carrier using their property. You will also need a personal story so that if you are challenged you have a claim to have been in a unrestricted accomodation prior to the holiday. Best wishes anyway.

Casiloco · 27/09/2020 19:25

It sounds as if the accommodation providers are adding their own interpretation to the rules. The guidelines clearly state that you are allowed to go on holiday. I would say they are overstepping the mark in asking for your hometown. As you say, they don't know that you are a single individual, who has been v careful and effectively probably considerably less risk to them than a family who have not been so conscientious.
I'm sorry, but in these circumstances I would lie. To all intents and purposes, you are coming from a highly risk-free environment so the situation is no different to how it would be if you were, indeed, coming from the neighbouring town which is not in lockdown.

Casiloco · 27/09/2020 19:27

Oops didn't read full thread. Glad you can OK - have a wonderful time!!

If you lie I hope you’re caught and lose your money.

There are some vile people on MN.

Rae34 · 28/09/2020 21:35

Well this blew up! The answer to this was solved some pages ago when some kind mumsnetters helped me to figure it I wasn't doing anything against the rules.

In fact I have just returned from my trip Grin I am very relaxed, chilled, you name it. The check in felt very safe and it was lovely to be by the sea for a few days.

I feel much better. There are some things that have been bothering me, but I was so bogged down I couldnt see a way out of it. I feel like I am going to be able to handle things better now. Mental health matters. It really, really matters, and as long as you're not putting others at risk, we need to do what we can to prioritise and look after it.
