To lie about my location to the holiday accommodation?

Rae34 · 21/09/2020 23:45

I am single and live alone so this period has been very difficult. I have also worked from home since March and have been very careful with who I see and where I go. Just took my temperature there & normal. About 99% sure I am virus free.

Anyway I had booked 3 days in a cottage by the seaside, about 2 hours drive. I am an artist and have been so looking forward to finishing my project and getting some breathing space before what lies before us in the next season.

The booking.com accommodation has just been in touch asking where I am coming from because I am in a restricted area they will not accommodate me any longer. Well sadly I am in such an area. AIBU to tell a white lie and say I'm coming from the next city over (which is not affected)?

I have been so, so careful and was so looking forward to a short break. Also doubt I'd get a refund and it wasn't cheap.

How do you know you don't have the virus? Some people don't have any symptoms whatsoever. All it takes is for you to pick it up off 1 person. Someone in a supermarket or anywhere.
If you're allowed to break the rules, then so is everyone else. We've all got holidays booked and plans... But I guess that is why you are in a restricted zone, because people like yourself don't listen. There are plenty of people on their own like you... You could have made the most of the time you were given when they relaxed lockdown instead of staying home

AshenQueen · 23/09/2020 18:13

It’s not a white lie. We are all making sacrifices and we will all have our own buts and it’s.

Please don’t.

HoneyNutLoop · 23/09/2020 18:21

I’m CEV and I am terrified to go away for this very reason. My mental health is awful too. I am sorry, but life is really really tough right now. Please be honest, I hope this will all pass soon.

Dancingdayo · 23/09/2020 18:25

We are in this position because of people like you. The ones that are 99% sure they haven't got it, so it must be okay for you to carry on regardless of the rules. Annoying.

BrazenlyDefying · 23/09/2020 18:26

so it must be okay for you to carry on regardless of the rules.

Again.

What "rules" are these that the OP is breaking?

shergar · 23/09/2020 18:27

YABU. You could face a whopping fine too.

BrazenlyDefying · 23/09/2020 18:30

You could face a whopping fine too.

Fine for what? Who will be dishing out a fine, when the OP isn't breaking any rules, guidance or law?

The MN Covid monitors?

Luddite26 · 23/09/2020 18:31

Hope it goes well for you.

JenniferSantoro · 23/09/2020 18:34

Of course you shouldn’t lie. For all you know you could be asymptomatic and go and pass it on to others. Don’t be a selfish idiot.

PurpleDaisies · 23/09/2020 18:35

Not bothered to read the thread @JenniferSantoro?

Look at their terms as I’m sure they’ll have to refund you! I have been refunded in full for similar things - once when I didn’t want to stay somewhere where lots of protests were going on. Is it through Air BnB?

lyralalala · 23/09/2020 18:38

I get why people wouldn't read every page of a long thread, but folks could at least read the OP's updates.

She's going on her break. Booking.com clearly checked their stance and realise that cancelling people, with no refund, who are not breaking any laws wasn't on.

The laws on mixing in Scotland are in private homes, not public places and self-catering accommodation is classed as a public space. So no laws being broken whatsoever.

Cheetahfajita · 23/09/2020 18:39

Happy holiday OP, I think you did the right thing to be honest.

Mumkins42 · 23/09/2020 18:41

I would go. I would take personal responsibility - which is what everyone should be doing - and it sounds like you are. Temp checking and good hygiene, mask where needed then I would go and not feel guilty tbh. I would not tell anyone and just do it. Most politician's would not think twice.
I am vulnerable and have had to shield yet I still see how important this break is for you. If you get symptomatic then I'd say it would be really unfair to go. But until then...

SootBusters · 23/09/2020 18:42

Well a good, healthy friend of mine died from this and a friend of my partner. I don't think people genuinely believe this is serious. Glad it's all been sorted but her original post said I live in a restricted area but need a break, should I lie? It's this kind of mindset that will put us in a second lockdown. We all have to make sacrifices

PurpleDaisies · 23/09/2020 18:42

It’s. All. Sorted.

Usernamerequired · 23/09/2020 18:47

Please do not lie. If caught out you’ll be in trouble and fined. You could be carrying the virus for all you know and therefore possibly pass it on. I hope you are able to speak to family and friends about how you are feeling? Mental health issues can overcome us all so easily, do not struggle alone

Snowpatrolling · 23/09/2020 18:48

You don’t know you don’t have the virus, 8!of my colleagues included me were tested (through work) and 3 came back positive, absolute no symptoms whatsoever at the time of test.
Don’t lie. It’s not fair.

The point is that the OP doesn't need to lie.

Booking.com made an error as they clearly believed people in restricted areas weren't allowed to travel (hence their "no refund" stance as they'd be expecting people to claim on insurance).

Stonez9 · 23/09/2020 18:50

I live in a restricted lockdown area also and it states in the guidance that you can still go on holiday providing you are going with people who are from your household. You shouldn’t even have to lie as they shouldn’t be refusing you to go.

I personally wouldn’t go but that’s just my own opinion. If the guidance says you can then you can regardless of what anyone else thinks.

lyralalala · 23/09/2020 18:51

Who was going to fine her?

The point was that there was (and are) no restrictions on travel.

Booking.com don't have the power to fine people, so who was going to fine the OP for doing something that wasn't against any restrictions?

OneMoreDawn · 23/09/2020 18:52

Not RTFT but bbc Scotland News have just answered this question and it's yes you can go. As it's self catering and only one household it's allowed.
Sorry if I've repeated or it's now not needed or useful.

PurpleDaisies · 23/09/2020 18:53

She didn’t lie.
Booking.com realised that made a mistake.

Nothing to see here. It is sorted.

Read the op’s posts.

Bocadilla · 23/09/2020 19:01

Please go OP. There’s no reason not to. You are allowed. I hope you have a wonderful time Flowers
