AIBU to miss old school party food?
I would love to turn up at a party and for them to be serving cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks.
Anything else anyone misses?

Cheese and pineapple sticks.

aquashiv · 22/09/2020 06:14

They were these savoury crisps stuffed with cheese that tasted like it was packed with naughty additives.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/09/2020 07:48

I love crab sticks (or seafood sticks as they’re now called, since they don’t contain crab...). They’re still my go-to snack and about 75p in Aldi!

SerenDippitty · 22/09/2020 08:01

Cheese footballs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/09/2020 08:19

IMO retro party foods are still popular, cheese and pineapple ‘hedgehogs’ etc., and sausages on sticks.
I once took some frozen packs of sausages to a relative’s huge holiday home in France, largely as added ice packs for the other food I was taking.

Relative in question subsequently held a large alfresco lunch party for a lot of guests and locals. I cooked the (best quality) sausages, cut them up and put them on sticks as nibbles. They were all gone in a flash.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole now, but that tinned ham with a 'delicious' layer of jelly Shock in a weirdly-shaped tin that you had to cut with a little key - the cause of many a pre-budget injury.

Iamnotminterested · 22/09/2020 08:28

*buffet

SerenityNowwwww · 22/09/2020 08:47

I remember ‘coronation chicken’ was a thing, plus rice with sultanas 🤢

keeprocking · 22/09/2020 11:32

butterfly cakes - i make these still

They're very trendy now they've been rebranded as cupcakes, the price has soared and the sickly buttercream content has quadrupled.

HalloumiFries · 22/09/2020 11:44

Deltas from M&S. A sort of crisp but more potatoey ifkwim. They were shaped like small triangles and were little morsels of savoury, salty deliciousness. I was utterly addicted and they were always available as nibbles at any party, whether a full-on buffet or just served alongside drinks. We had a set of plastic, but wood-effect, serving bowls for crisps and nuts. Classy!

Dry-roasted peanuts don't seem to be quite as fashionable or widespread as they were in the 80s either.

Speaking of M&S crisps, they also used to do a baked potato and butter flavour which was amazing.

My gran used to whip up a jelly with carnation milk in (I think?) It was like strawberry mousse a la 70s naff and it was lush.

My grandma did a chocolate orange one similar. OMG it was the best!!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/09/2020 12:22

@WestendVBroadway omg that is the one she used to make!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/09/2020 12:23

I love a prawn ring. Complete with bright orange marie rose sauce.

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 12:51

You lot obviously don't live in the midlands, old school buffets are still regularly served!

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 12:53

@Toddlerteaplease

Mum still makes milk jelly. I'm too lazy and buy ready made trifles for my kids

veryvery · 22/09/2020 13:05

Sausage rolls fresh from the oven. (Bought them frozen ready to bake)

Garlic bread (old style 'French Stick' type. Again bought frozen ready to bake)

molifly14 · 22/09/2020 13:06

Those ham and cream cheese pim wheels!!

labazsisgoingmad · 22/09/2020 13:19

my sil wont come to a party if it doesnt have cheese and pineapple on sticks!
i miss black forest gateau mum always used to serve it with a jug of cream yummy

Ihatefish · 22/09/2020 13:37

I miss the Sunday tea, always served on the trolley wheeled into the front room from the kitchen -jacket potato’s cooked whilst we were out for a Sunday afternoon walk, butter, grated cheese baked beans, salad, celery in a jug, cucumber and onion in vinegar. French fancies on the bottom shelf of the trolley for pudding.

Ihatefish · 22/09/2020 13:38

All the buffet food mentioned is still regularly served at buffets here

Knittedfairies · 22/09/2020 13:43

Viennetta (sp?)

BackforGood · 22/09/2020 21:00

We used to squeeze primula cheese and chive down a sticks of celery.

Alive and kicking in my house - I introduced these to my dc a few years ago Grin

@TheBlessedCheesemaker I have brandy snaps and brandy butter every Christmas still. It is a tradition in my house

mangomama91 · 22/09/2020 21:01

Any party I host, there will ALWAYS be cheese and pineapple. (I always make extras too for after the party ;) )
It ain't a party if there's no cheese and pineapple.

Everyone knows this about me 😂😂

Brighterthansunflowers · 22/09/2020 21:02

Oooh haven’t had Primula squeezey cheese for about 20 years, but used to love it on crackers!

Romantica was the best dessert ever, far superior to vienetta in every way and I will absolutely die on that hill.

Feellikedancingyeah · 22/09/2020 21:17

Fondue. Definitely not a covid suitable food
