AIBU to miss old school party food?
I would love to turn up at a party and for them to be serving cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks.
Anything else anyone misses?

Another vote for cheese (preferably a mature cheddar) and pineapple on sticks.

I just wish I could go to an actual party ...... but that’s a whole other thread.

Dillo10 · 21/09/2020 20:40

Those prawn rings with thousand Island dip in the middle

No, double Gloucester!
VestaTilley · 21/09/2020 20:42

I put cheese and pineapple on the buffet table at DS’s first birthday Grin - I should add there were no toddlers around to grab the cocktail sticks as we were in lockdown!

Laffie · 21/09/2020 20:42

Scones with coins wrapped in greaseproof paper in the middle.
Bread and butter dipped in hundreds and thousands.

Hyperfish101 · 21/09/2020 20:43

Scones with a coin inside wrapped in grease proof paper. Or was that just my family?

BritWifeinUSA · 21/09/2020 20:43

Viennetta
Blancmange

SerenityNowwwww · 21/09/2020 20:43

I’ve never heard of that. Family of dentists?

Minimumstandard · 21/09/2020 20:44

I love chocolate fingers. I don't buy them though...I always think that I'll just have a couple. Half an hour later, I'm staring guiltily at an empty box and reading the nutritional information in horror.

Prawn cocktail wotsits!

GratitudeGoddess · 21/09/2020 20:50

Fondant Fancies

Peppermint Creams at Christmas

Coconut Ice

Raspberry or lime Blancmange in the flowered mould

Salmon paste sandwiches with the crusts cut off

Those cheesy biscuits in the shape of the ace of spades, hearts and diamonds etc

Soda stream

And I loved coke floats and cream soda floats

Gypsy Tart (yum)

Laffie · 21/09/2020 20:53

@Hyperfish101 x post, we still do it now.
Also homemade cheese straws from the BeRo book.

Minimumstandard · 21/09/2020 20:56

@Handsoffisback. I know, they are lovely... But I just can't risk having them in the house. I have no self-control Sad!

ClinkyMonkey · 21/09/2020 20:57

Top hats and Rice Krispie buns.

Brighterthansunflowers · 21/09/2020 20:57

omg prawn cocktail wotsits!

And prawn cocktail quavers! And salt and vinegar quavers!

I’m possibly too excited about discontinued crisps Confused

VirginiaWolverine · 21/09/2020 20:59

Another vote for mushroom vol au vents. I missed them so much that I made a batch for supper a little while ago.

TylluanBach · 21/09/2020 20:59

Those wheel shaped baked snacks that stuck to your tongue

TylluanBach · 21/09/2020 21:00

And thinly sliced cucumber soaked in vinegar

HalloumiFries · 21/09/2020 21:04

@keeprocking That's a new one on me - we had a fish shaped ceramic plate - exactly the right size and shape for the salmon.

@Crimples - I adored that dip. Whisking it together was always my job when preparing for a party. I'm not sure how much made it to the table as I'd be scooping and devouring it as quickly as I made it.

boatyardblues · 21/09/2020 21:04

Definite yes to mini meringues with cream and butterfly cakes. I also remembered black forest gateaux, which I could fancy right now.

RefriedBeanz · 21/09/2020 21:13

I’m British Asian and we had the best of both worlds party food. My mum would do fondant fancies, quavers, cheese and pineapple, sausage rolls and cheese and onion puffs for the vegetarians. Then she’d have an Indian section with samosas, kebabs and Indian rice puffs (similar to quavers but curry flavoured). She’d also do a little dessert station with jelly, trifle, chocolate fingers and a huge bowl of tinned fruit with had a can of mango pulp and a can of evaporated milk in it. Sounds gross but actually delicious and very popular in Indian houses! She also used to make the best sandwiches with sandwich spread, ham and cheese, with the crusts off!

HorsePellets · 21/09/2020 21:14

Jelly in the shape of a rabbit

Things on cocktail sticks, as many as possible, preferably with pineapple

Party rings

Chocolate fingers

QUICHE. Homemade, cut into slices, everyone asking “what’s in this one?” as if they haven’t heard, and then commenting on the pastry.

RefriedBeanz · 21/09/2020 21:15

@Handsoffisback

dillo OMG prawn rings, I am going to buy one for the weekend. I bet Iceland will come through for me.
Iceland prawn ring is delicious. Especially the Christmas one, it comes with a fab sauce.
