AIBU to miss old school party food?
I would love to turn up at a party and for them to be serving cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks.
Anything else anyone misses?

The prawn ring

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/09/2020 20:05

Another one for vol au vents.

Brighterthansunflowers · 21/09/2020 20:13

Yes to cheese and pineapple on sticks, must be stuck into half a tinfoil covered pineapple

And jelly and ice cream in little paper bowls

I know that as an adult I could make these for myself but it wouldn’t be the same

keeprocking · 21/09/2020 20:16

Silverskin onions and cheese on sticks, as well as the pineapple variation.

RincewindsHat · 21/09/2020 20:18

Devilled eggs and cheese & pineapple on sticks are standard buffet fare in our house! :) the 80s are alive and kicking Grin

Notss · 21/09/2020 20:19

It’s got to be another vote for vol-au-vents for me.

Just before COVID hit us, I was hosting a get together and I went round Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Iceland looking for the pre baked shells as I really couldn’t be bothered to bake them. The first three apparently stopped selling them all together and Iceland only does them at Christmas.

I ended up baking them.

ColleagueFromMars · 21/09/2020 20:21

Jelly and ice cream in cardboard!

stovetopespresso · 21/09/2020 20:21

a whole salmon in a special dish with cucumber. for kids, a huge bowl of sweets they can dip in to at will

Those massive jelly moulds which were a staple at every kids birthday. Not seen them in years

GuyFawkesDay · 21/09/2020 20:25

My gran used to whip up a jelly with carnation milk in (I think?) It was like strawberry mousse a la 70s naff and it was lush.

Mini Meringues with cream piped between them too

Crimples · 21/09/2020 20:26

YY to cheese/pineapple/pickled onion/sausage hedgehogs! 🦔
Also butterfly cakes, yum.
I used to love a garlic dip my mum used to make, it was a packet of powder which you mixed with, I think, milk.
Sounds gross but it was ace, can still taste it.
Would have been mid eighties, before dips were a thing

HalloumiFries · 21/09/2020 20:26

Has to be alternate cheese/pineapple cheese/pickled onion. Vol-au-vonts filled with campbell's condensed mushroom soup. Garlic dip made from a packet powder whisked with milk. My mum's showstopper for a proper party was a whole side of salmon poached and then painstakingly layered with ultra-thin slices of cucumber to look like fish scales! I also remember before garlic bread (garlic bread^?) really took off, mum would make her own garlic butter and serve it in a dish beside warm baguettes - only the really brave/worldly guests would try it Grin

Iamnotminterested · 21/09/2020 20:26

Philly and cress bridge rolls.

TRIFLE!

Crimples · 21/09/2020 20:28

Ha @HalloumiFries we crossed with the garlic dip there.
Would be so good with a halloumi fry right enough!

ShinyMe · 21/09/2020 20:28

I feel a bit sad now. I can't remember the last time I went to a party. Certainly not in the last... 15 years.

I used to like viennetta at parties in the 80s.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/09/2020 20:31

There are plenty of sweets I miss - Texan bars, star bars, super mousse (like milky ways but better), mint cracknel...

WestendVBroadway · 21/09/2020 20:32

@GuyFawkesDay My mum also made a 'mousse' from jelly and evaporated milk, if orange flavour she added a small tin of mandarins too. My mum also did gherkins wrapped in a slice of salami on a cocktail stick.

katy1213 · 21/09/2020 20:32

Chocolate crispy cakes. And those little waxed dishes of trifle with hundreds and thousands bleeding into the cream.Which was probably Dream Topping. Shop-bought birthday cake with toasted coconut around the sides. (Yuck,) And sausage rolls.

Mini pizzas and quiche

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 21/09/2020 20:35

Guyfawkes, my Mum makes the jelly mousse! If you would like the recipe I can jot it down for you. It is evaporated milk.

keeprocking · 21/09/2020 20:36

a whole side of salmon poached and then painstakingly layered with ultra-thin slices of cucumber to look like fish scales!
