What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Priya is lovely. I also love the name Lakshmi, also Padme (which i think was made up for Star Wars) - it’s the M sound.

Would never have seriously considered either though.

I'm a huge fan of Russian names and wanted to call our son either Maksim/Maxim or Aleksandr. OH said they were both too pretentious, sigh.

formerbabe · 22/09/2020 19:13

Oh yes, Russian too. I adore the name Tatiana...I'd have loved to have used it.

Secondsop · 22/09/2020 19:15

Azariah. I think it’s a gorgeous name but for me it’s unusable because of “a dingo ate my baby”.

AndNowItsHappeningInMine · 22/09/2020 19:15

Floyd.

Dp once had a dog called Floyd.

playthegame · 22/09/2020 19:16

I loved Elijah and Isaac for a boy. My totally anti-religion DH didn’t! Too biblical apparently.

We did have a boy but named a totally non biblical name (which I do love too).

salcombebabe · 22/09/2020 19:17

24 years ago I loved Imogen as a name for my daughter but exDH couldn’t say it!!!!

grisen · 22/09/2020 19:19

Annabella. I grew up watching a film about a talking cow called Annabella. Also Nanna, after my Nan as we live in the UK with half the family being British.

TorchesTorches · 22/09/2020 19:21

Ursula.

If I would have had a 3rd and it was a girl... but I didn'thave a 3rd and DH HATED the name anyway. Ursula is my phantom daughter!

Genzymoo · 22/09/2020 19:35

@SophieMF

Ronnie and Reggie would have been genius! 😂
They wouldn’t have been bullied!
Mamalexi343 · 22/09/2020 19:49

Theo, ethan, Nathan, Nathaniel because DH can't pronounce 'th' properly.

Also anything with a W as our last name begins with a W.

Ooh you reminded me of my teenage Russian obsession (short lived!). I wanted twin daughters called Anastasia and Marina when I was about 13. Both could have worked well in the UK actually.
olbndansmummy · 22/09/2020 19:58

Damien for ds1 dh said no
Jack Daniel for ds2, as it's his fault I caught that night!
Billie for dd, but our surname is baker and dh said it sounded like a circus act

Africa2004 · 22/09/2020 20:07

Kitty. I love that name & would've suited my daughter but my surname starts with a c

KeepOnMovingForwards · 22/09/2020 20:13

I don't know if it's a self fulfilling prophecy, but I know/knew two Damiens, both tearaways. Grin

OhMyMirror · 22/09/2020 20:15

Wanted to call my oldest Charlie. Ex shot it down as that's his dads name and he's an evil, sadistic bastard. He didnt want to "honour" him by having his first grandkid share his name. Never occurred to me as everyone called him Chick.
When we split a few years ago, I got a dog and called him Charlie instead. He's lovely though.

MondeoFan · 22/09/2020 20:18

Summer my DD was born in summer too. Everyone hated it.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 22/09/2020 20:19

Faye with Leah as a middle name, but if you say it quickly it's Failure!

MsEllany · 22/09/2020 20:24

This thread has reminded me, way back when I was about 20 I was having a conversation like this with a colleague. She was around 50, had one daughter. She said if she’d had a son, she would have called him Wayne.

Her surname was King Grin

She might have been pulling my leg, but she didn’t half play it straight if she was!

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 22/09/2020 20:27

Finn or Flynn, two of my favourite names but they rhyme with my surname

Griselda1 · 22/09/2020 20:30

Emerald, Laurie,Ishbael. Loved them all but they just didn't fit somehow.

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 22/09/2020 20:32

Teachers always look at the names of new children at their school and 9 times out of 10 they can pick out the names & their latest spelling variations that will be, let's say - hard work, along with their, let's say - unique families!

Be kind, it's your child's future, not yours!

Rainbo83 · 22/09/2020 20:33

Cornelius or Gabriel. Every one laughed so much I decided against.

Wetwashing00 · 22/09/2020 20:38

We discussed calling our son Seth for a really long time, started calling the bump Seth to get a feel for it but found that as we live in a part of the country where “th” and “h’s” are not really pronounced, including by us.

We couldn’t call him Sef, it just reminded us that we sound so common/Essexy
