What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Axel, hubby was a mechanic early in his working life.

Saffron. I loved it, I’m a chef and love the connection, hubby pointed out it would be shortened to Saffy and my son said oh My friend is called Sapha and that’s similar. Both wouldn’t work well with my surname and put me off totally

Ethan, loved it until hubby kept saying if we shouted him it would sound like Heathen 🤦‍♀️

Loved Crispin till my daughter said awww baby crispy. I like it! Suddenly I didn’t like it lol

I called my daughter a name as agreed with now ex partner we called it her for over a week (got congratulations cards with it written in) only for him to decide he didn’t like it so changed it

Miraf1 · 22/09/2020 18:03

Adolf.

Teddybear27 · 22/09/2020 18:04

My mum wanted to call me Roxanne, this was a number of years ago. My Dad said no way.. Particularly after the song by The Police!...

AdditionalCharacter · 22/09/2020 18:07

Stella, but couldn't because of the beer of the same name.

BunsyGirl · 22/09/2020 18:12

DH wanted Ophelia for a girl. I googled it and someone said it sounded like “a feel of yer”. Couldn’t get that out of my head so that was the end of that!

Gailplatt95 · 22/09/2020 18:14

@WildCherryBlossom I’ve got a 2 year old Delilah and she sings this song all the time😂 great grandad plays it for her!

My faves have always been Vivian and Harriet for girls and my boy names are Fraser and Blake. DP hates them all😩

Gailplatt95 · 22/09/2020 18:15

Also my worst boy name is Elton, I love it and DP always takes the piss

Bearlover16 · 22/09/2020 18:16

Madeline. 2007. But then the whole MM saga so we had to change it last minute. It was in the press constantly.

LaVieEstBelle159 · 22/09/2020 18:18

I wanted Rupert but our last name rhymes with Bear - I thought it was quite sweet but DH was a categoric no!

Superleo837 · 22/09/2020 18:21

I loved Magnus ( it became his middle name but I wanted it as his first. We have Swedish heritage and I loved it but everyone said they thought of Magnus Magnusson who I’d never heard of! I also liked felix and still do but everyone said they thought of the cat food

FrenchtoEnglish · 22/09/2020 18:23

KeepOnMovingForwards · 22/09/2020 18:33

@FrenchtoEnglish

Mungo ans Gaylord. My sister went crackers.
Oh no, you could not call a child Gaylord and send him to a state school in the UK. Your sister was right.
PablosHoney · 22/09/2020 18:33

Mungo and Gaylord! Fuck me 😂

Loulablake · 22/09/2020 18:36

I wanted Freya for a girl but my husband hated it....because the hospital plays on a loop an anti smoking campaign and it’s a little girl called Freya 🙄

SophieMF · 22/09/2020 18:39

I love the name Aoife, because My Granny was Irish, but DH thought it would be annoying for her to tell people how to pronounce it all the time!!!! And Bonnie has always been one of my favourite names, but it’s my sister-in-law’s name!

It was actually really hard to agree on a name as we have completely different tastes!

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 22/09/2020 18:41

My friend has twins called Sam and Ella. She used to call them 'the bacteria' when they were babies Grin

Genzymoo · 22/09/2020 18:50

I found out I was pregnant with DD2 a day before my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He died 6 weeks after she was born. His father was called Ron and I wanted to call my DD2 ‘Ronnie’ as I thought it would mean a lot to my DF. It was pointed out that it may raise some eyebrows, given child 1 is called Reggie!

Instead we named DD2 my DF’s nickname. So all was well.

Pliudev · 22/09/2020 18:53

Had my first DC been a girl I wanted to call her Olive Emerald. This was a long time ago and Olive was unusual then but it was my gran's name. My SIL commented that I certainly would be two shades of green when I went into labour (she'd been there and done that). And I had a boy.

mummyslittlenightmare · 22/09/2020 18:54

Mary - I just think it's so sweet & cute.

DP was having none of it :(

Went for Sophia-Jean in the end..

SophieMF · 22/09/2020 18:55

Ronnie and Reggie would have been genius! 😂

KeeefBurtain · 22/09/2020 18:56

Balthazar
Lazlo
Azazel

Lilith
Hecate
Lazuli

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 22/09/2020 18:57

Priya and Tadhg.

Both totally culturally inappropriate.

Notusuallydown · 22/09/2020 19:00

Lilith could be a mistake Steff, it's a female demon... Again eyebrows could be raised!

formerbabe · 22/09/2020 19:09

@PaulinePetrovaPosey

I also love the name Priya. It's gorgeous. I love Italian names too but i think you need some connection to the country to use them.
